Ensign Doz Finch is a lively, hands-on and occasionally facetious Human, currently posted as an Engineering Officer to the USS Gorkon, the flagship of the Tyrellian Defence and Exploration Taskforce.

A prior-enlisted crewman, Finch qualified as an engineer out of the Technical Services Academy on Mars, and spent the majority of her career in Maintenance and Damage Control roles. Her passionate devotion to her work, and her unyielding ability to adapt led her to postings such as the USS Bonestell, John Muir, Marigold and many others. Her story at Starbase 118 began with the death of her closest friend and colleague Murphy; deeply affected by his passing, and having lost her emotional footing, she hastefully accepted a sponsorship to commission, despite always saying she wouldn't.

	Background

Finch's Birthplace, the Falklands, Earth

She was born in the city of Stanley, East Falkland, to parents Iris and Frederick Finch.

As the last sibling of four, she was humorously thought of as the runt of the litter, a quip not helped by her small stature and scrawniness. Her mother Iris was a specialist petrologist who studied the topography of Earth's South Atlantic islands, while her father Frederick mostly worked away as an enlisted engineer for Starfleet. Both parents originated from the West Midlands region of England. They each had hard-as-nails, witty but firm personalities; traits also exhibited in Doz and all three of her brothers.

While parked at a starship repair shipyard, a software malfunction caused Fredericks ship to accidentally collide with another one, instantly killing everyone on-board. After his death, Iris left her career in the Falklands and relocated the family back to Birmingham, to be closer to other family members.

Doz and her brother Wallace, the brother closest to her in age, used to watch the sunrise in the local woodlands of Birmingham, until he left for the Martian Tech Academy as seemed to be tradition. She thereby remained behind as the last of four siblings to deal with her miserable mother who gave her earache.

Without purpose or motivation, and desperately sad, Iris became steeped in depression, no longer able to leave the house, socialise or parent her children, becoming the shadow of the woman she once was. As the only child of four left, Doz inadvertently became the leader of the house, and responsible for every facet of Iris' life. Losing some of her most important years of her teenage life to this experience, she left home and signed up to become an enlisted crewmember for Starfleet, eager to get as far as possible away from her life on earth.

	Starfleet Career

Around age 20, she attended an intensive programme at the Mars Technical Services Academy, and it's attached speciality school, and soon after qualified as a Maintenance Engineer, focused on checking, repairing and servicing the interior subsystems of Federation starships. The abridged programme gave her skills in damage control that ranged from maintaining ships equipment and systems, firefighting and prevention, and the servicing or repair of components affected by electrical, mechanical, chemical, radiological and nuclear damage, in either combat or day-to-day non-combat situations.

Although not her speciality, on her first Tour of Duty aboard the USS Bonestell, she was regularly ordered to perform maintenance on the ship's outer hull by a cantankerous Chief Engineering Officer. It was during these duties however that she ended up fostering an appreciation for spacewalking.

Despite a non-Academic route into her field, her practical, hands-on and sometimes coarse approach to engineering enabled her to quickly understand ships systems, resulting in clever, quicker repairs - though not without mistakes. Her preference to learn by hand caused her to develop a series of habits, such as unnecessarily squinting at manuals in concentration, and her proclivity for holding mechanical artefacts to her mouth or in between her teeth, thereby tasting them.

Whilst serving as a Chief Petty Officer on the USS John Muir, a 'regular haunt' of hers was Starbase 24, and during what should have been a normal shore leave, all hell broke loose when the starbase' shields failed during an oncoming meteor shower, resulting in a station-wide evacuation except for herself and the other engineers present that day, such as a cloddish Bolian named Bofer.

For most of her career, her medical record was clean; however during the last few months of her service as a crewman on the USS Marigold, she endured a series of small accidents and mishaps, mentally distracted by something that had happened onboard, no doubt in reference to Murphy's death.

	Trivia

• She can often be seen drinking tea in one hand, while she works with the other.
• She eats in tiny amounts, and seldom finishes her food; red meat, fish, toast or biscuits are a few of her go-to's, but nothing mealy.
• She's an insomniac—opting for intermittent 40 minute naps.
• She loathes sickbays; mainly the smell of them.

• Gnaxac: A nervous and stuttering Ferengi and one of the first engineers Doz met on the USS Gorkon during a series of frustrating repairs in the wake of the Rogue Planet. Outside of their ranks, Doz finds him endearing and sees him as a young person to be guided. She trusts his professional opinion a great deal, aware that he knows the ship better than she does.
• Alieth: Her Vulcan colleague from the science department, and the reason many of the crew call Doz Ensign Binch, instead of Finch. Despite their polarised personalities, they seem to have good rapport—not excluding Alieth's canine companion Cheesecake.
• Meg Bendyn: Having met during a chance encounter in the Brew Continuum, Meg and Doz worked together to solve an ongoing issue with faulty circuits on deck sixteen. Although separated greatly by age and life experience, Doz appreciates Meg's enthusiasm and work ethic, and sees a friend in her.

	Mission History & Participation

The Rogue Planet - USS Gorkon

Arriving at the tail-end of the mission, and in some style, Finch piloted the support vessel Azetbur down through the Rogue Planet's wild kaleidoscopic clouds, till her arrival at a crumbling village was met by Commander Alieth and Lieutenant Fortune. Together they traipsed through dangerous underwater tunnels till they reached a floating patchworked structure - once a starship - brimming with terrified inhabitants. Alieth and Fortune, using the Azetbur as their means to an end, lifted the structure out of the water and eventually from the planet, while Finch kept those inside of it fully prepared and safe.
