Background
Born on Earth in the Western Desert, Australia. Father and mother travelled around Earth whenever they could, wanting their childern to learn about their own planet and avoided anything outside of their own system.
When Derik was 14 the family was hiking in the French Alps, Derik watched a Starfleet ship leave the system at warp through a telescope. This moment was what peaked his fascination about Starfleet. Derik and his family had travelled to every continent by the time was 17. This is when he told his parents about his desire to join Starfleet. Although unsure at first, they were supportive of his choice.
Just before leaving for Starfleet. His mother opened up to him about her time with Starfleet and what she had endured.
