The Science Division on Denali station is currently home to a cadre of 16 officers and 50 enlisted personal. This core of permanent staff, made up of those that served on the USS Juneau, are initially tasked with setting up the required science facilities.

To capitalize on the opportunities for research and scientific discovery on Ring 42, Starfleet has plans for a myriad of research projects, and intends to bring in additional personnel to oversee them. These extra science staff will triple the size of the department, but in the main will only be assigned to Denali Station for the duration of their projects, leaving once their work is completed. This will result in a frequent rotation of faces within the department, with personnel coming and going as some projects end and others begin.

All these temporary project staff, regardless of rank or seniority within their own fields, fall under the administrative purview of Denali Station’s Chief Science Officer, who is also responsible – along with permanent core of science staff - for overseeing the longer-term scientific exploration of the Ring.

Locations

Soldotna Tower: The core of the Science division is located in Soldotna tower, with multiple science labs on levels 10 through 19, and the Chief Science Officers Office on level 15. Living quarters for all temporary science staff (and their families if they have brought them along) are located on levels 21 to 28. The permanent staff have the privilege of choosing quarters in a location of their preference.

Starfleet Research Station: A small research station establish outside the city by personnel from the USS Grace Hopper and USS Juneau. The facility serves as a forward base for field research, and also provides quarantine and containment capabilities outside of the city itself.

Departments

In time the Science Division on Denali is expected to include the following departments:

  • General Physics
  • Geology
  • Meteorology
  • Chemistry
  • General Biology
  • Botany
  • Ecology
  • Microbiology
  • Xenology
  • Zoology
  • Genetics
  • Archaeology and Anthropology
  • Urban Studies

Additionally, there is an Administrative area on level 15 (containing the Chief Science Officers Office), and a Field Support Unit that co-ordinates research activities across the Ring, and provides a small cadre of staff with local knowledge to assist visiting researchers.
