Types of Characters

These are the types of Characters you will be able to play and interact with on the Chin'toka:

Player Characters

Your Player Character is written by you and only you. It is your main persona used to participate in missions and interactions on the ship. Player characters who are ranked full Lieutenant and above, or who are lower ranks and are serving as Acting Department Heads are considered Senior Officers. Functionally, there is little difference between a Senior or Junior officer.

At the beginning of a mission, the Captain will usually hold a briefing with his Department Heads, who will then assign specific tasks to the people under their command. Obviously, this could change depending on whether or not the mission is planned out in-character or whether it begins with a bang! Whether your character was present in this briefing or not, it is usually just fine to write as though your character is aware of what their department has been assigned to do as soon as a sim comes through with those instructions, as their department head will shortly filter the information down to their subordinates.

The reason we do things this way on the Chin'toka is to simplify and expedite briefing scenes that often take place in the beginning of a mission, which can get chaotic in a hurry if most or all of the ship's PC crew are all in one location. This lets us move ahead and get into the meat of the mission!

NPCs

Non-Player Characters are minor characters that have no assigned writer. NPCs are characters meant for simple interactions. People who cross your path in simple ways, a moment of conversation in a turbolift, a server in the lounge, etc. Those people can be written for by everyone.

PNPCs

Personal Non-Player Characters are minor characters that are written by a single writer on the ship or installation. PNPCs are not considered members of Senior Staff. PNPCs are a fun way to explore other duty posts and other parts of the crew structure in the ship.

  • Creation of PNPCs is governed by the Captain and FO. A small description and bio should be sent to them in order to be allowed to write as the PNPC.
  • Also note that multiple PNPCs of a single writer may not exist in a single department.
  • These restrictions generally apply to characters who serve on the ship and not family members, or other minor characters needed beyond those that serve on the ship.
  • PNPCs should never outshine a PC in any given scene unless prior discussion between players occurs. They are there to supplement a scene, but PCs should be taking the lead.
  • It is perfectly possible to switch a character that began as a PC to a PNPC, and to begin playing a PNPC as your PC, with your Captain's approval. If this occurs, the above guidelines for PNPCs should still be followed, regardless of whether a character began their life as a PC.
  • PNPCs should serve only as a supplement in order to allow a player to explore different sorts of characters, and not as a replacement for their PC or to supplement sim numbers without making the switchover official. SB118 ships strive to ensure that each department aboard has a certain number of PCs in order to provide for smooth storytelling, and neglecting a PC in favor of a PNPC can result in a duty post being underwritten which can make missions more difficult to administrate.

MSNPCs

Mission-Specific Personal Non-Player Characters are a special type of PNPC that is assigned to a specific person for at least a single mission. They can be helpful guest stars or the Antagonists of the mission.
