"Discarded we have been, still we live and with life, a chance to prove our worth."
a Chalchaj 'qmey proverb.
The Chalchaj 'qmey are a hybrid species, a genetically engineered blending of two warrior cultures created to be the perfect soldiers in case of all-out war with the Federation.

Just like the Dabh'aelisu, Debrune, Garidian, Rekarian, Reman and the Watraii they are considered to be a sub-species of the Romulans who are themselves considered to be a sub-species of the Vulcans.

History

The Chalchaj 'qmey, which means a Child of Heaven when translated, are a genetically engineered hybrid species that were created jointly by the Klingon Empire and Romulan Star Empire in the years when the two governments believed an all-out war with the Federation would devastate the quadrants.

The first generation of candidates from the Romulan side to be used in the Chalchaj 'qmey project were actually outcasts, political prisoners and other undesirables, those that were not exiled to Remus were instead sent to the Chal colony. As such, there is some level of kinship between the Chalchaj 'qmey and the Remans. The Klingons sent individuals with no ties to any recognized Klingon house.

When it became time to start work on the second generation of genetically engineered Klingon/Romulan hybrids created on the Chal colony, certain changes to the program were implemented. In addition to what the scientists believed were the best qualities inherited from their parent species, they were given certain Human organs that were harvested from prisoners obtained by both empires.

It was just after this stage in the project that the Klingons abandoned the work and cut off ties with the Romulan government. Certain differences between them continued to escalate and the possibility of armed conflict between them became very real.

The Romulans continued working on the project, refining the genetic work to eliminate the last few medical problems and overall genetic mistakes. Unfortunately by the time that they had completed this work the Chal colony and their test subjects had to be abandoned.

On their own, forced to fend for themselves, the Chalchaj 'qmey quickly learned to adapt. They left the labs behind and founded colonies in different locations around their world. These quickly grew into towns and they were able to harness the knowledge left behind by both of their parent species.

As a result they are now a space faring species with the technological capability of defending themselves from both of their parent species if need be.

Government

They adopted an unusual form of government founded in part on the data left behind by their parent species. As a result they have a Senate with a single representative from each of the 187 Houses. All matters are debated and voted on by the members of the senate.

Each house is set up in an identical manner with a council of 10 elders who are selected to be the advisors to that Houses Senator and both of their Praetors. All three of these are selected to serve for life by their house which debates the candidate’s merits and then votes.

Praetors serve a number of purposes from overseeing the development of their house, it’s military forces and determining their house policies.

Description

The Chalchaj 'qmey are humanoids with the distinctive Klingon forehead ridges and Romulan pointed ears, proof of their hybrid ancestry. Other than this they have the typical mix of height, weight and body types expected of most humanoid species. All of them have short black hair, dark eyes and tanned complexions.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Their immune systems were genetically engineered to be very advanced, highly resistant to many different types of viruses, poisons, toxins and other potentially dangerous microbes. An unexpected side effect that was discovered was that they were also resistant to the effects of stasis fields.

Psychology

They have a fairly stable mentality but some do suffer from a tendency to lapse into some kind of mental fog that borders on being some kind of berserk battle frenzy during hand to hand combat.

Religion

As one might expect of a hybrid species, their religious beliefs also seem to be a hybrid blend of original thought mixed with remnants of Klingon and Romulan beliefs.

The end result is an unusual pantheon of saints, men and women from their own history who have been important because of the affect that their lives had on their society and their future.

Mythology

They had a limited amount of mythic data available to them from both of their genetic parent species, however what they did have has been blended together to form a new unique version that better reflects who and what they have become.

Society

Their society seems to be a unique blending of certain aspects of both the Klingon and Romulan cultures. Every single one of them belongs to one of the 187 different houses but without any of the bitter infighting that can be found among the Klingons.

While there are 187 major communities of various sizes on their world besides their capitol city, one for each house, members of each house can live in any community. All of these communities are well laid out with plenty of infrastructure to support and provide for the needs of the entire community.

Culture

They have a distinctive warrior culture that seems to be an unusual blend of that belonging to their parent species. They have a form of Opera but it is not as loud or harsh on the ears as that of the Klingons. Also they seem to enjoy visual art forms that portray epic physical conflicts.

Customs

They have a couple customs that seem to be both universal to their species as well as being rather drastic as well. The first is the Test, a grueling physical test that requires the young individual to survive for one week alone, naked in the wilderness of one of their many protect zones.

The other is the Walk, a challenge that requires an individual who has passed the test to walk at a normal pace along a path way made up of 100 of their fellow test survivors. As they walk they get punched or kicked once by all 100 on the individuals lined up along the pathway they must walk.

Technology

They are considered to be fairly equal to both the Romulans and Klingons and just slightly behind the Federation when it comes to their technological abilities.

Economy

While they can be completely self-sufficient if need be they do have a number of long term trade partners. They do not produce for sale and seldom purchase any luxury goods. The majority of their trade is confined to raw materials, medical supplies, industrial equipment and other such practical products.

Military

Every single House has their own military forces and normally their own warships as well. On top of this they have their central fleet which can have members of any house serving on any ship.

As a rule most families maintain less than 10 ships while the main joint fleet has over 250 ships. Most families only construct destroyers and cruisers with the emphasis on cruisers. The main fleet has a variety of ships sizes, classes and support vessels.

Federation Intelligence Files

While there has been no negative contact between the Federation and the Chalchaj 'qmey, there has not really been anything resembling positive contact either. They seem to be completely indifferent to the needs, wants and desires of other species.
