The Bynars are a race of humanoids native to the planet Bynaus in the Beta Magellan system. They're known for working together in pairs.

History

The development of the Bynar ability to constantly receive information and to store it, via their buffers, until it was necessary happened over a long period of time - by 2153, the Bynars had adopted their practice of replacing each of their newborns' parietal lobes with a synaptic processor.

The Bynars became well-known to the Federation by the 24th century, as Starfleet employed Bynars to perform computer upgrades on Starfleet vessels.

Although the extreme integration of technology into their society had tremendous benefits for the Bynar society, the Bynars discovered that it also had a few disadvantages. Due to an electromagnetic pulse from a supernova in their star system was due to knock out their planetary computer in 2364, the Bynars left with the intention of temporarily deactivating their computer and transferring all the stored information to a new facility until the pulse had passed. Believing an appeal to Starfleet for assistance would be rejected, a team of four Bynar stationed at Starbase 74 attempted to store the information from their planetary computer into a Galaxy class starship during it's computer refit. Their attempt was discovered by the crew, but they ultimately allowed the transfer and maintained the information until the pulse passed Bynaus.

Description

The Bynars are shorter in height than most humanoids and are genderless. With lilac skin and enlarged skulls, each Bynar has a patch of dark purple hair on both sides of their neck and asymmetrical ears. Their most definitive characteristic is that they are interconnected with a master computer on Bynaus.

Physiology

When a Bynar was born, a surgeon removed the child's parietal lobe and replaced it with a synaptic processor.

There is a great degree of physical symmetry between each Bynar couple - for instance, each Bynar's pair of ears matched those of their partner, but were on the opposite sides of the head.

The Bynars' high adaptability to technology and computers means that they can access most computer systems across the galaxy. The ability to conduct electrical pulses with their bodies, and withstand most environments that humans or other humanoid species cannot, means that they are a valued addition to teams such as the Starfleet Corps of Engineers.[2]

Psychology

Bynars always work and live in pairs. Their typical clothing was also consistent in such a way. Because the Bynars are so interconnected with the master computer, their language and thought patterns became as close to binary code as possible. They can speak Federation Standard, usually finishing each other's sentences. It's believed they are co-dependent on each other.

Society

Culture

Once a Bynar is born they are genetically bonded to another for life, and the two can communicate with each other using complex binary code.

A bonded pair of Bynars cannot be accurately described as siblings, lovers, or friends. Instead, they more closely resemble two halves of a whole.

Families

In a typical Bynar family unit, two bonded pairs each have a child using their own DNA, and the two children become a bonded pair shortly after birth. The four adults raise their two children together as a group. Initially, the children are very different, but as they age they grow more and more similar until they are nearly identical.[3][4]

Language

The Bynars' primary language is a high-frequency sound, unintelligible to Humans, though the Bynars use it when they speak to each other. Every Bynar is equipped with a buffer, which they carried at their waist, to manage this rate of information transfer and had a small metallic component on one side of their head. Each of these mechanisms has a red light which blinked on and off when the Bynars are communicating between one another. Each of the Bynars have the component on the opposite side of the head from their partner, yet another aspect of their symmetry when grouped.

Customs

If one of the pair dies, then it is traditional for the other to return to Bynaus where they are paired with another. Any Bynar who does not return to Bynaus has their unique identification code removed from the computer network.[2]

Technology

The Bynars are heavily integrated into their planetary computer network, which is the backbone of their society. Over time their interconnection with their world's master computer has grown to the point that their language and thought patterns have become as close to binary as is possible for organic beings. In fact, their very lives depend on this interaction with the master computer, as well as with one another.

Because Bynars must maintain a connection to Bynaus's central computer, they typically do not travel far from their home planet. For Bynars that do travel, a series of specialized long-range signal-boosting beacons are scattered throughout Federation space so that they may maintain their connection.[5]

Brain surgery is exceedingly common on Bynaus due to the outfitting of every infant with a synaptic processor. Surgical equipment (particularly neurosurgical) has been developed with extreme precision and size in mind, resulting in extremely sophisticated tools. Bynaus has become a popular destination for neuroscientists and neurosurgeons seeking to hone their craft.[6]
