Relationships

Mother

Veltri of Clan Ralnek was a feared and respected raider-captain among Acamarian Gatherers. She was known for brutal precision in skirmishes and loyalty to her clan. She vanished five years ago during a border raid gone wrong near the Romulan Neutral Zone. No wreckage, no signal, and no body was ever recovered.

Father

Rokan of Clan Ralnek was a mechanic and former starfighter pilot. His main job was keeping the Ghost of Vokar flying long past its prime. He and Veltri raised Braya with the skills to survive both in a cockpit and among the cutthroat Gatherers. He died during a systems failure as the ship struggled to exit warp-space, stabilizing the Ghost of Vokar just long enough to save his crew, and his daughter.

Brother (older)

Drennek of Clan Ralnek is Braya’s older brother. He current serves as first mate aboard a Gatherer raiding vessel, operating along the fringes of Federation space. Loyal to the old ways, Drennek sees Braya’s defection to Starfleet as a tragedy.

Brother (younger)

Varn of Clan Ralnek is the youngest of the siblings. He is sharp-tongued, with his father's knack at mechanics and a dreamer’s mind. Unlike Drennek, Varn watched Braya leave with admiration. He serves aboard Varn's Gatherer raider.

Sister (twin)

Kerna of Clan Ralnek is Braya’s twin in blood only. She is a fierce loyalist to the Gatherer way, and views Braya’s Starfleet commission as a stain on their clan’s name. Braya has heard rumours that Kerna has climbed fast through the ranks of the Ghost of Vokar, not just to lead, but to face her sister across a battlefield.

Background

Braya was born in the outer rings of Acamarian space. She was raised in this lawless area among the fractured remnants of the Gatherers; a ragtag collective of pirates, smugglers, and freedom-seekers who had rejected the unification of Acamar III. Ralnek, her clan, was best known for its fast ships (and faster tempers). There was no room for taggers-on in a place like this, and Braya was taught to fly by ten years old, using stolen skiffs and old, repurposed interceptor craft. Using these to outrun patrols, and rival clans, became second nature.

The Gatherer life consumed her, with most days spent raiding remote cargo lanes, moving contraband, and the occasional sortie deeper into Acamarian or Federated space. Braya was fast like her ships, too fearless for her own good, and dangerously adept at the controls of smaller craft. She earned the tattoos (and the scars) on her face, and became a valued member of Clan Ralnek. A botched smuggling run, however, left her crewmates dead and her ship adrift. Braya was apprehended, and sentenced to serve time at a Federation penal colony on Jaros II.

Isolated from her clan and her way of life, Braya found herself fenced in; both literally, of course, and by the Federation ideals she once found so insipid. Her incarceration found her questioning what she'd lived for. A retired Starfleet pilot, turned prison counselor, noted the raw talent in her file and dared Braya to put her skills to better use. It was this challenge that reformed her, rather than a sense of guilt.

With the officer's sponsorship, she applied to Starfleet Academy under extreme scrutiny, and with the heavy weight of a provisional rehabilitation order on her shoulders. The earlier years were the most difficult, and her record was smeared with disciplinary notices and coaching, bar brawls, and a full inquiry and hearing for the "unauthorized field testing" of a Delta-class shuttle. She struggled in many classes, skirting the edge of academic suspension. Braya's flight scores, at least, were the one exemplary exception. She specialized in small craft operations, and excelled in space-combat simulation, evasive maneuvers, and tactical reconnaissance.

While far from an ideal Cadet, her grit, and her loyalty, were the other qualities that earned Braya at least some measure of respect leading up to graduation. She wouldn't be a good choice in a diplomatic negotiation, and her grasp on the sciences was tenuous at best. However, if you needed someone to watch your back, no one knew the value of allegiance like someone who'd lived and breathed it her entire youth — a youth that still haunts her, though she does her best to mask it.

Personality

Braya is a fiercely independent, sharp-witted young woman who is wired for survival. Raised among the Acamarian Gatherers aboard the pirate vessel Ghost of Vokar, she learned to trust instincts over systems and people over policies. Years of starfighter piloting and pirate raids have honed her confidence to a dangerous level, where she trusts her own abilities more than she should. Her time in a Federation penal colony instilled some small sense of accountability, to which she listens occasionally, and a respect for Starfleet’s ideals, albeit a grudging one. Braya has too much love for bending the rules, and tries to evade consequence with a scoundrel's charm. She is loyal to those who earn her trust, and rabidly protective of people in that small circle. Though she masks her vulnerability with humor and swagger, but her compass is truer than she lets on. In the heat of danger, she’s quick-thinking, unflinchingly in her resolve, and always circles back to the promise of her Gatherer people - 'You fall, I carry. You vanish, I hunt'.
