Background
Childhood
Basso Laika was born male in the Trilar Peninsula in the stardate year 2,376. She has two siblings: her older sister Rota and her younger brother Elig.
Both of her parents lived throughout the Cardassian Occupation and served within the Bajoran militia. After the occupation, her parents retired from the military service to work as farmers in the Trilar Peninsula. When not in public school, the kids often helped their parents farm katterpod and kavas. Her mother often taught conservative Bajoran values.
Bajoran University
Basso earned a scholarship at a local Bajoran university in the Trilar Peninsula where she majored in agricultural science. Her original plan was to use this education to help develop her parents’ farm. It was during her education she was exposed to more liberal attitudes of Bajor. With Bajor a member of the Federation, the universities could receive more funding and materials for the schools. This distance from her family had the added benefit of allowing Basso to discover herself. In her final years at the Bajoran University, she began transitioning to female. One of her professors, Dr. Bodan, encouraged Basso to seek a career within Starfleet. He suggested that while her talents could be put to good use on Bajor, a Starfleet career would offer her more.
Her mother disapproved of this decision and urged Laika to stay on Bajor. Her father, on the other hand, encouraged Laika to pursue a career in Starfleet.
Starfleet Academy
Basso attended the nearest Starfleet Academy satellite campus to Bajor. While Bajor became an important trading hub due to the Prophets' wormhole, Basso herself did not encounter many non-Bajoran people before attending the Starfleet Academy. With all these strange customs, traditions, and attitudes, the culture shock scared Basso. Little by little, she learned to dismantle her xenophobic attitudes.
Starfleet Academy offered the ability to reinvent oneself. The opportunity to become a better person and forge a new path. With her background in agriculture, she made a soft pivot towards specializing in botany and chemistry.
