Ayhan was born to a life of freedom and a hard-scrabble agriculture on a planet in the Cardassian/Federation neutral zone.  Life was not easy but it was rewarding as Ayhan and his family created an existence from nothing with several other settler groups.  They did not want nor use much aid from the Federation but when Cardassian colonists began raiding their planet with arms directly supplied from the empire, the Volan colony sprang into action to defend itself.  Ayhan and his two brothers eventually found their planetary defense force enveloped in the Maqui resistance and served with valor there for several years.  After his capture by the Cardassians and the following prisoner exchange  with the Federation, he was given two choices: prison or the military.  Ayhan chose the latter and entered the enlisted ranks before passing the Starfleet Academy entrance exam and matriculated four years ago.
