Vast and untamed, the Avalon Sector has been frontier territory since the 22nd century. Dominated by the better part of the Briar Patch and historically regarded as insignificant, Starfleet only took notice of the Avalon Sector when the planet Ba'ku was discovered in 2375. After the incident with the Son'a, Starfleet made some headway into the region over the next 10 years, eventually assigning a lone vessel, the Discovery, to the region. In 2384, Deep Space 285 was constructed after the discovery of the Saurian Empire and in response to Romulan interests in the region. After the destruction of Genura in 2385, the Federation began to devote more diplomatic and scientific resources to the region. They were nearly all recalled after the destruction of Romulus and Remus in 2387, and what little was left was further reduced after other interstellar crises like the Vaadwuar Invasion and the Klingon Invasion.

After the Gurab Crisis in 2389, Starfleet withdrew the last of its resources from the region and the border was redrawn to make Ba'ku, a Federation world, inside a Federation controlled sector. The DS285 station became a backwater assignment, no longer the seat of a Sector Command or a branch of the admiralty. No Starfleet ship was assigned to the region until late 2391, when the USS Constitution-B returned to the region. The assignment of a Galaxy-Class starship is perhaps a sign of Starfleet's renewed commitment to the region as a new frontier to be explored, or perhaps, something else entirely. In early 2392, the USS Constitution-B was reassigned to the Talos sector, with the USS Doyle-A, a newer Luna class ship, being assigned to explore the sector.

Sotra Orbital Research Station

Observatory.jpg
  • 2389 At the insistence of the Federation Science Council, the Sotra Orbital Research was established to study the planet below and to map the surrounding nebula. It was placed under the purview of Dr. Morley Rin and Dr. Aralo Onil, each taking charge of one side of the mission.
  • 2391 Against Starfleet protocol, the scientists remained sequestered for over 2 years before the USS Constitution-B was assigned to resupply the station instead of the usual civilian freighter. While there, the true nature of the station was discovered.

A small orbital research station studying both the planet below and the surrounding nebula, Sotra was built in 2389 as the last funded Starfleet venture into the region. It was resupplied by Civilians, contracted by the Federation, for over 2 years until the USS Constitution-B arrived in 2391. A series of incidents exposed the nature of the facility and just what went on there. The planet and surrounding space were host to energy beings that let a strange disease loose first aboard the station and then the USS Constitution-B. This led to a violent outbreak of hallucinations that turned some officers against one another and incapacitated a great many more. The situation was solved at the last minute by the sacrifice of Dr. Onil. A small Starfleet force was left behind on the station after the USS Constitution-B departed to monitor the situation.

Gurab II

  • Timeline
    • 2375 The Colony of Gurab II is established as a civilian outpost and the start of meaningful Romulan interests in the Avalon Sector.
    • 2380 A secret Tal-Shiar weapons facility is built on Gurab II, not far from the settlement.
    • 2391 Acting on orders supplied by Starfleet (later discovered to be a rogue faction) Captain Tyr Waltas and his crew are tasked with destroying Gurab II and their weapons research facility. Mutiny ensues over these orders.

A Romulan world that housed a weapons research facility, Gurab II was the site of a high profile incident in 2389 when the USS Discovery-C was allegedly tasked with destroying the facility and the surrounding colony. A mutiny ensued over Starfleet orders, led by Commander Raj Blueheart and Hsina Amman. Eventually it was discovered that advanced weaponry did in fact exist on Gurab II, but a more surgical solution was devised by Lieutenant Commander John Valdivia, preventing a loss of Romulan lives. This incident, never the less, caused a scandal in the Federation and the populace remains divided on the issue years later. Over the next few months, Starfleet began to withdraw from the region entirely. The incident at Gurab in addition with the incident involving the Daris II virus, were the primary causes of the resignation of Captain Tyr Waltas and the decommissioning of the Discovery-C in early 2391.

Briar Patch

Briarpatchsquare.jpg
    • circa2020 Planet Ba'ku colonized within the Briar Patch.
    • 2154 Dr. Arik Soong names the region 'Briar Patch'.
    • 2270 Battle of Klach D'Kel Brakt between Romulan and Klingon forces takes place. Klingon victory with heavy losses.
    • circa2295 Rebel Ba'ku attempt to take over the planet, exiled to become the Son'a.
    • 2375 Ba'ku discovered by the Federation, observed by duckblind mission.
    • 2375: Ba'ku Incident and the Battle of the Briar Patch ensue.
    • 2378: Ba'ku becomes a Federation world.

Vast and almost totally unexplored, the Briar Patch was formerly almost entirely within the Avalon Sector before the border was redrawn in 2390. The Patch is home to several varieties of stellar phenomena that make conventional warp drive, impossible. Newer, more advanced Starfleet ships are able to maintain a warp field of about warp 4, but in this vast, unexplored and dangerous patch of supernova remnants and metreon gas, it is inadvisable to go anywhere in a hurry. The famous battle of Klach D'Kel Brakt was fought on the outer edge of the Briar Patch in 2270, between Romulan and Klingon Forces. Explosive and deadly, the Klingon Victory at Klach D'Kel Brakt was (some say) a Pyrrhic one considering their losses. But to Klingons, there is no other victory than a glorious battle, and Klach D'Kel Brakt certainly was.
