Awards 2006 Finale!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello, Fellow Simmers!

It's my pleasure to announce the finale of Awards Ceremony, 2006. The lists have all been tallied, the committees have had their say, and now we're ready to announce the complete and final list of recipients.

I'd like to make two notes before we go any further, the first being that we have a new award, called the Data Artistic Award, which is presented to any officer in the fleet who has made a consistent effort to enter each of the bi-monthly writing challenges. You can find more information, and the recipients, at this URL:

http://www.starbase118.net/members/events/awards/general/data.php

The second announcement is that the Kalendra Award has gone from a "special" award (only given once per ceremony), to a regular General Award, where it can be given to only one person per vessel, but is not restricted to just one recipient for the group as a whole.

And now the moment you've all been waiting for! To find the recipients of staff awards, and Duty Post awards, you can view the 2006 Staff Presentation, located here:

http://www.starbase118.net/members/events/awards/ceremonies/2006.php

To review the complete list of member awards, you can head to the General Awards Hall of Fame:

http://www.starbase118.net/members/events/awards/general

We also have the "yearly award stats," which is a quick reference of who-received-what. That is listed below. Please keep in mind that these stats do NOT include Staff awards!

Issues with Yahoo! Groups

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello, fellow simmers!

Please be aware that Yahoo! Groups is doing some upgrades and maintenance, and there will be scattered outages of the Yahoo! Groups archives until at least Tuesday. Similarly, you may find that you are not receiving messages until a few hours after they have been sent due to queuing on the server. This is normal, and will resolve itself. Check the Yahoo! Group first, in the next few days, before sending messages to see if any have come through. If the archive is not available, check back within a few hours to see if it is back online.

Also, if you find that you are not receiving messages each day, you may wish to check the Yahoo! Group for your vessel each time you log in to your computer to see if your inbox is bouncing messages. It's common for Yahoo! Groups to stop sending mail to your account if they receive a bounced message of any type. You will see a message about your account being on "bouncing status" when you log in, and you will be able to fix it from any page in Yahoo! Groups.

Moving hosts - important!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello everyone,

I have decided that we will be moving from our current web host, today. Over the past few months, their support has gone down hill, and we've have very spotty up-time, as well as extremely bad delivery times on our starbase118.net e-mail. I cannot abide by this level of quality any longer.

As such, I have registered with a new host, and am in the process of having our website transferred to their servers today.

IMPORTANT - The forums will be offline until the transfer is complete! Similarly, PLEASE DO NOT USE THE WIKI, OR THE UPDS until you receive another e-mail from me via this announce list. If you do make changes to the wiki, or your UPDS profile, while the transfer is in progress, any changes you made will be lost.

Similarly, e-mails sent to starbase118.net e-mail addresses may or may not be delivered between the hours of 2pm, CST today and 8am, CST tomorrow. Please use Yahoo! Groups when possible (as opposed to sending directly to a starbase118.net e-mail address) so that a record of your e-mail is kept on an external server, and can be accessed later after the transfer is complete.

Thank you for your patience in this matter. Again, you will receive an e-mail from this list when the transfer is complete.

Moving hosts - still in progress

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, our new web host is still in the process of transferring our accounts to our new server. Due to the poor performance of our old host, it is taking much longer to get the files off of the old host, and as such we're still in this "between-stage."

However, we are nearing the end of this transfer. There are two more ship sites which need to be transferred, at which time we will transfer our domain name to our new host. At that time, it will be out of the hands of our host, and into the hands of the internet to "propagate" the location of our new host to all the servers out there. This can take between 30 seconds and 48 hours -- odd, I know.

Until I have confirmed that our domain name is pointing to our new host, our forums will remain online. I ask you to please avoid making any changes to the UPDS or the wiki, as well, until I have e-mailed this list to advise that the transfer is complete.

It is my hope that this move will allow us a more stable server environment. Of the few accounts that have already been transferred, and I have tested, we're looking at a 10x speed increase in page loading and processing. (A page on our old host that took over 9 seconds to load took less than 1 second on our new host.)

Thank you again for your patience. As noted above, I will e-mail this list when the transfer is complete, and the forums are reopened.

Moving hosts - complete!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

After much wrangling and hand-wringing on my part, we've finally completed the move to a different host.

As such, the site has been brought back online, and you are free to work with the forums, UPDS and wiki.

PLEASE -- if you see ANY errors or problems, e-mail me directly at "t.wolf@..." giving me the EXACT error, and where you were trying to access it. I don't anticipate any problems, but we definitely want to fix any that come up!

Thank you, everyone, for your patience in this matter. I realize it was a tad onerous to deal with this for as long as we did, but it is my hope that the new host will be a productive experience.

118 Wiki offline

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hey folks,

Please do not make any changes to the wiki until further notice. We had to upload an old backup from March 22nd, and are attempting to restore the versions between then and now. Feel free to browse the wiki, but do not change any files, or it is possible they will be lost.

Wiki update

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello, fellow simmers.

Looks like our host is not able to do any more than they have already done in regard to recovering the last two weeks of data from our corrupted wiki database.

I apologize to all of you who lost hard work in this error. Unfortunately, with this type of problem, there was simply nothing we could do to fix or avoid the issue. Luckily, we did happen to have this fairly recent backup, or we could have lost even more data!

Feel free to begin editing the wiki again.

Wiki Update

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello everyone,

Many apologies for the wiki issues going on this afternoon, but unfortunately it looks like it'll be at least late Monday evening before the wiki is back online for editing. As has been stated on our community news, you're still free to browse the wiki at your leisure, but any changes you make will be lost.

If you're interested, here's the problem: we're trying to upgrade to the newest version of the wiki software. However, that version requires php5, which is the newest version of php (part of the software that drives our server). The rest of our website is configured for php4, so we had to move our wiki onto it's own account on the server, where php5 could be loaded. This is what took most of the afternoon today -- moving the files and working with our host support line to try and get php5 operational.

Once the wiki was finally brought online, issues appeared in how the wiki at the new location was handling URLs. We have not been able to find the source of the problem, but currently there are a number of errors occurring when linking around the wiki at the new location, making it impossible to navigate regularly.

The wiki at the location you're used to finding it at (starbase118.net/wiki) still works properly. However, assuming we can get the wiki at the new location working at 100%, there is no easy way to move over any new changes. Thus, you can still browse the "old" wiki.

I will send out an e-mail to this list, and update our community news, once the "new" wiki is fully operational. As mentioned above, I expect that we will be able to track down the problem with the MediaWiki developers by late Monday evening. Again, apologies for this speed-bump -- this is the price you pay for this new age of technology, eh?

Wiki update - back online!

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Well folks, we're back online, with a few caveats.

First and foremost, you need to know that the wiki has moved to a new location, now found here:

http://wiki.starbase118.net/wiki/

However, you do need to be aware that due to some issues with compatibility of the new version, URLs are formulated slightly different with the upgraded wiki. Thus, it will be somewhat difficult to go directly to the URLs that you used before. You will need to go to the main page of the wiki first, and put your article name in the "Search" box, then push "Go" to get to your article -- or browse the wiki to find your page. We are working on a solution that will allow you to use your old URLs and get to the page on the new wiki, but we have no idea when, or if, this will work out.

The wiki at the old location will be removed within 48 hours, but rest assured that the wiki at the new location is completely identical.

If you have any questions, please e-mail me directly at "t.wolf@...". Sorry again for the inconvenience, but thank you for your patience!

Website issues

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hello everyone,

I have just been informed of the "Bandwidth Exceeded" error on the site, and am notifying our hosting company of this issue immediately.

This is extremely unexpected, as we have more than ample bandwidth to supply three sites our size.

Thank you for your patience while I sort out this issue. I will e-mail this list when the problem is resolved.

Writing Challenges

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hey folks!

Now that the website is back up (sorry about that -- I forgot to notify this list!), I wanted to remind everyone of our ongoing Writing Challenges that we do on a bi-monthly basis.

If you win, you get a banner for your forum sig, and one for your ship's website, as well as the ability to pick the next round's theme, and be a judge on the judge's panel. Not to mention that we announce your victory on the front page of our site!

Many people find the challenges a great way to spread their wings and step outside of their character for a moment. Head to the Writing Challenges forum to find out more:

Terms of Service

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Fellow members,

I need to inform you of a new document, just ratified by the Executive Council, called our "Terms of Service." These are rather common across the internet, and are basically used to identify the terms under which a service (in this case, our RPG) is provided to it's members by the staff.

It is important to you mainly because it deals with the issue of how your creative works can be used both during your tenure in our group, and in the (unforseeable!) future in which you might not be a member. As such, it is very important that you read and understand the document, as soon as possible. You can find it at this location:

http://www.starbase118.net/members/constitution/tos/

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me at this e-mail address. I will be more than happy to explain any elements of the TOS to you.

Having trouble submitting award nominations?

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hey folks,

If you've been receiving the "No Authorization" error on the awards nomination panel, give it another try now. The problem has been fixed.

The issue occurrf when members who are still "Junior Members" of the forums try to submit a nomination. You must have at least 100 posts on the forums to be considered a "Senior Member," but I have removed this access requirement from the form.

If you have any other issues with the form, please contact ME directly at this e-mail address (t.wolf@...). Your CO / ship OOC list cannot assist you with form issues.

Thanks!

An evening with the Yahoo! Groups team

  • FltAdml. Tristan Wolf

Hey folks!

I wanted to tell you about an event I just got home from called the "Yahoo! Groups Townhall Meeting." This is the second such event, the first having been in the Bay area of California, and this subsequent one in Los Angeles.

First, let me say that I bravely fought an hour+ of traffic to get to the event itself. It was held downtown, in the Westin Bonaventure hotel. Despite the hassle, it was worth it.

These events are intended to reach out to the Yahoo! Groups moderator/owners audience, and talk about the current groups issue, as well as the upcoming release of the completely new Groups. As some of you know, I founded our community over 13 years ago, and of that time, nine of those years we've been hosted on either Yahoo! Groups, or it's predecessor, eGroups. (Yahoo! bought eGroups in 1999 and re-branded it as Yahoo! Groups in 2001.) So, suffice-it-to-say, I've both got quite a bit invested in Groups, and have worked with it a great deal.

The event was attended by about 40-60 people who are moderators/owners of Yahoo! Groups, ranging from an African Music group to a local "Impeach Cheney" group. We even had "celebrity" Yahoo! Groups owner, Marla Cilley, who some of you may know as the "FlyLady" at FlyLady.net, known for helping housewives organize and de-clutter their homes. Her list has over 445,000 members!

We started with a networking event, where I met a number of group owners, and we talked about what our groups discuss, and so-forth. We then moved into a panel session with the product managers and developers of Yahoo! Groups, including Lee Clancy, who's basically the person in charge of Yahoo! Groups. He discussed some of the exciting new changes to Yahoo! Groups that are going to be unveiled in the coming 6-9 months, with the launch of the all new Groups.

Some of the great new features include:

- Total and complete control over Group pages, including the ability to add more text, re-arrange elements, and even embed video; - Easier moderation tools, allowing moderators to spend more time (in our case) simming, and less time moderating; - An all new "Library," which will encompass and organize the links, photos, and files of the group; - And much more!

One of the great things he also discussed is the renewed internal interest in Yahoo! Groups, which is in fact one of the largest Yahoo! properties -- delivering more e-mails a day than Yahoo! Mail, and doing it with a much smaller team. Lee confirmed that Groups had been something of a neglected property for a while now, with very few updates having been implemented since the Groups was acquired in '99. That's all about to change, though, as they've added a host of new employees to the team, and have worked diligently over the past year and a half on the all new version. Just to give you an idea of how big Groups is: there are 9 million Yahoo! Groups, with 109 Yahoo! Groups members who send over 500 MILLION e-mails EACH DAY!

The final segment of the evening was a question-and-answer time with the panel, allowing owners to talk about the issues that matter to them the most. Just a few of the "sore subjects" that came up:

- The ability to recover/adopt groups: it's in the works! - Message delivery: as we all know, this is a pretty huge issue for us, and the lead developer Steve Swales confirmed that they have just recently implemented some huge performance changes which have helped Groups immensely. You may have noticed that messages are delivered in an average of 10 seconds these days, as opposed to an hour+, a few months ago? - Bouncing: this is being worked on, and changes should be implemented with the new version.

All-in-all, I have to say that I was mightily impressed with the whole event. Yahoo! seems to have realized that Groups is THE premier list-server on the internet today, and 109 million users being connected by this service are an important part of their business. I am very excited to have been involved with this event -- not to mention how excited I was to get some Yahoo! Schwag, including a travel mug and a notebook! (Check them out!: http://s54.photobucket.com/albums/g114/wolf530/?action=view¤t=Yahooeve nt003.jpg )

And to boot, now I have the e-mail address of the Groups lead developer. Hehehe...
