Background

Famous as a sort of journalistic pistolero, giving fiery and biting reports and commentary on various issues, foreign and domestic, Alatan Barjol blurs the line between investigative reporter and editorialist, being one of the Federation's foremost literary voices for the past thirty years. While born of an aristocratic background on Maravel, she is an unabashed populist who was a noted enemy of every Federation President since Jaresh Inyo and was one of the first backers of now President Narala's candidacy. A woman with an opinion on everything, Alatan is popular and respected in the Federation for sticking to her opinions regardless of the vagaries of politics or public opinion. Also a lightning rod for controversy, her reporting was the impetus for the Sheverek Affair and was once (unsuccessfully) prosecuted by the Bajoran Provisional Government for incitement of riot during her reports on corruption in the Council of Ministers.

Alatan is a populist and a nativist but a soft one in regard to the latter. She believes that the Romulans should be welcome in the Federation but they also need to do their part in order to ease tensions and provide a smooth path to integration into Federation society. However anything that comes to Romulan benefit at the expense of the native Ketar V populace is aberrant in her eyes and she believes that an actual political compromise is unnecessary and just pandering to special interests.
