Growing up as an only child, Akoni was only used to having friend-to-friend relationships with other students in her classes. On a family visit to Vulcan, she met Selar, a young Vulcan who became her first true friend despite the cultural difference. Selar's parents, close friends of Albanos and Gaiana Soriano, had been professors at the Vulcan Science Academy, inspiring Selar to pursue the sciences himself. Over the course of two Vulcan weeks, they became close friends, encouraging Selar to open up and talk more about his knowledge and interest in engineering and astronomy with her, enhancing Akoni's own interest in science as well.

From there on, Akoni focused more of her studies around starship engineering and astronomy, amazed with the warp capabilities of vessels, but mainly those of Starfleet. However, her parents strongly disapproved of her interest to travel to Earth to enroll in Starfleet, but never managed to change her mind. Leaving on shaky terms, she found solace in a few close friends and excelled in her studies.

Eventually, Akoni pursued her interests by majoring in astronomy and minoring in starship engineering. While she took several classes concerning anthropology and ecology, she thinks of it as more of a hobby.
