FRONTIER DAY

Mission Specialist's Log, Stardate 240107.01

With the Changeling crisis resolved, everyone has been given a temporary reprieve while the Captain plans our next move. By this point, most of us are certain that everything isn’t as it appears. The fact that Changelings managed to board the Astraeus and replace key staff without us being aware is chilling, to say the least. On top of losing several members of the crew in the Operations Center explosion, we have lost at least one officer to the Changeling subterfuge.

Chief Petty Officer Andrew Davis.

Those who knew him well are grieving his loss. I’m sad to say that I am not among them. It is on occasions like this that I realize how little I know about some members of this crew. A fact that I intend to remedy going forward.

For now, I will enjoy the temporary calm in the storm. God knows it never stays that way for long.

Mission Specialist's Personal Log

It’s almost strange being back. I haven’t been aboard the Astraeus since my days as its First officer. But that’s Commander Serala’s responsibility now. The Mission Specialist role is one that I’ve become familiar with by now, so it should be easy enough to settle back into a routine. At least I won’t have to deal with ghosts of the past on top of adjusting to a new position.

Though part of me is sad leaving my first command on Shemsh, a part of me knows it is for the best. It was only temporary until Lieutenant Commander Th'qosral could return from his deep space diplomatic mission. While in command, I did my utmost to avoid making large-scale changes that would not align with regulations. I talked with Commander Th’qosral before our departure and he seemed pleased with the progress on projects that had been in danger of stalling due to strained work relationships. Overall, I’m pleased with what the colony crew and I accomplished during my brief tenure and am looking forward to implementing what I learned in my interactions with the Astraeus crew.

Chief Engineer's Log, Stardate 239710.11

It’s taken some time to process what happened that fateful day. I’m only beginning to accept that nothing could have been done to prevent the Captain’s death. Acting commanding officer Serala seems to be of a different mind as does Commander Raga who has stepped in to fill the role of acting first officer. This has left me in the position of acting second officer by default. Given the delicate state of affairs at the moment, I’ve carried out my duties silently. As expected, this has had an impact on crew morale. Commanders Serala, Raga, and myself are doing the best we can to keep up the crew’s spirits. Captain Thoran will certainly be missed.

From what I understand, there are arrangements being made for a funeral. Out of respect for Serala and Toryn’s close relationship with Captain Thoran, I’m focusing on my duties and taking on as much of the burden of day-to-day operations as I can to allow them the time they need.

Chief Engineer's Log, Stardate 239710.21

It has been a frustrating few days as the Engineering and other departments work out the kinks of our newly-christened ship. Every vessel has been known to have some hiccups on its maiden voyage, but the number of them that the Chin’toka has experienced in the last two days alone has me wondering how thoroughly the building teams checked her over before giving the final stamp of approval. Even with all of the work my team did inspecting her to be sure she was space-ready, she could definitely have used another few days in dry dock.

Lieutenant Lephi as well as Crewmen Brandie and Ravesa have performed admirably under the circumstances. With any luck, the last of these issues will be worked out before we reach Tibro. It would be unfortunate for our grand entrance aboard a new flagship to be spoiled by a couple of minor technical malfunctions.

INTO THE UNKNOWN

Lael Rosek

Chief Engineer's Log, Stardate 239803.22

This mission was one of the more challenging ones of my career. So much death and loss. It will certainly take several sessions with our ship’s counselor to sort through it all. What my team and I went through down there gives me a whole new appreciation for the choices commanding officers need to make on a daily basis. The burden of command is very real and one doesn’t have to be a ship commander to feel the weight of responsibility pressing down.

Both Doctor Snow and Lieutenant Levinson performed admirably given the circumstances. Accordingly, I’ve placed positive notes in their personnel files and have recommended both for commendations or some form of distinct recognition for their brave actions.

It is hoped that due to Doctor Snow and her team’s timely intervention that Chief Katnar’fari will make a full recovery. I look forward to a final conversation before she returns to her home and her people.

On a side note, I’m very much looking forward to what I hope will be an uneventful shoreleave. I will be satisfied if my greatest stress is the larger picture details for Chythar and I’s upcoming nuptials.

Mission Specialist's Log, Stardate 239805.08

My first official day on the job and I find out there’s no designated office for a mission specialist on this ship. I suppose it shouldn’t be that surprising considering that I will be Chin’toka’s first mission specialist of record. Toryn has already agreed to give me some files from his time as Mission Specialist aboard the Atlantis that he feels will be helpful, namely what research he and others have gathered so far about the Par’tha Expanse.

However, with so much still left unexplored, I can imagine that there will be quite a learning curve. Thankfully, there are several officers among the senior staff with a sophisticated knowledge of the politics of the region. I believe this will prove critical in the missions and interactions ahead.

Chief Engineer's Log, Stardate 239709.20

It’s been hectic in Engineering since Commander Thoran announced that some of the crew would be transferring to a new vessel, the Chin’toka. It isn’t my first transfer and certainly not my first as Chief Engineer. However, something seems different about this one. Sadly, some of my engineering team have elected to stay behind to help with the Atlantis’s refit and still others have requested transfers to other postings for personal reasons. This has been hard on everyone regardless and I’ve seen some hard goodbyes exchanged.

Thankfully, the bulk of the team will be going over to the Chin’toka, including Ensign Lephi and Crewmen Ravesa and Brandie. We’re scheduled to receive a couple of petty officers and a few crewmen to replace those who are leaving. I’m confident that, despite the unexpected personnel changes, we’ll be able to get our new Akira-class home fine-tuned and purring over the coming days.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED

First Officer’s Log, Stardate 239611.23 [1]

The Engineering team continues to investigate what happened aboard the Golthani vessel. Though the team strongly believes it was sabotage of some sort, they’ve been unable to locate any evidence of this, leaving us high and dry with regards to possible suspects. The crew of the other ship has been even slower to warm up to the idea of Federation assistance than the Golthani, but I believe with time they’ll realize the Federation is no threat to them.

Meanwhile, it’s a sad day for many of the crew as orders have come through for reassignment. The senior staff have been dispersed throughout the fleet to fill a need for experienced officers elsewhere. I’ve made the difficult decision to step down as first officer of the Astraeus. I’ll be staying with my mother on Earth and have plans to take on a position as an Academy instructor.

My career used to mean everything to me. I sacrificed so much to keep it. I let people go from my life in my obsessive pursuit of rank and my own ship. This decommission has forced me to take another look at my priorities and what I want.

FLASHPOINT

Chief Engineering Officer’s Log, Stardate 239510.31

The Montreal is in rough shape. Not only did she take heavy damage to her external bulkheads and interior corridors, she lost a good portion of her crew in the fight, including the Chief Medical Officer and First Officer. From what the reports are saying, the Montreal’s commanding officer, Commander Zhou Tai-Sheng is seriously injured and is being treated in the Veritas’ sickbay. This whole situation is a giant mess.

I’ve been coordinating with the Montreal’s Acting Chief Engineer, Lieutenant J.G. Francis Michaels, on repairs. The engineering team here has been very helpful. If we keep up this pace, we might actually be able to finish the majority of the repairs before the deadline I gave Commander Mei’konda.

First Officer’s Personal Log, Stardate 239512.31

Our last mission was in many ways a success. We were able to safely retrieve the Artemis crew minus one of them who was killed trying to protect his colleagues. Despite all that we accomplished, I can’t help feeling the weight of both the dead Artemis crewman and the blood I shed in protecting myself from a pirate who attempted to end my life.

This in combination with our conflict with a small group of Tholians seems to have stirred up old anxieties and I find myself facing challenges similar to those I experienced following the Gorkon’s return from the other universe. I plan to report to our counselor as soon as I have a spare moment to possibly resume my previous treatment in hopes that acting quickly will keep the situation from becoming as serious as it did before. In the meantime, Lieutenant Galven is hosting a New Year’s Eve party and Commander Mei’konda has seen fit to add something of his own to the celebration.

Lael Rosek

First Officer’s Log, Stardate 239601.13

Needless to say, we’ve had an interesting start to the New Year. Lieutenant Kawakame and Crewman Borq were treated in Sickbay for various injuries resulting from a rather violent sexual encounter in the brig while Lieutenant Kawakame was supposed to be on duty. The combination of the medical report from Doctor Skyfire and the footage recovered from the brig’s security cameras have confirmed what happened.

Also, our newest ensign nurse had what she termed a “meltdown” in Sickbay while on duty. I included all relevant details in my report to her direct superior, Doctor Skyfire, who has agreed to set up a counseling session for Ensign Grog with the counselor. Lieutenant Cattan, Doctor Skyfire, myself, and Commander Mei’konda if he’s able to be present, will discuss the findings from the counseling session and any medical examinations to determine how we should proceed regarding discipline as well as measures to reduce the likelihood of such outbursts in the future.

Saying that the last few days have been stressful and complicated would be an understatement. I’m still having a hard time processing the choices I had to make against the Klingon pirates and now dealing with the aftermath of the recent situation with Lenik of Vulcan. I knew that command wasn’t for the faint of heart and that those in these positions were often forced to make difficult choices in the heat of battle, but I realize now that I had no concept of the burden they carry on their shoulders. I have a whole new respect for commanding officers like Captain Rahman and Commander Mei’konda. I have the feeling one counseling session a week isn’t going to cut it. Hopefully Dr. Cattan has enough openings in her calendar.

WOUNDED ANIMALS

RosekFirstOfficer.png
Lt. Commander
Lael Rosek

First Officer’s Personal Log, Stardate 239605.27

Shortly after arriving at Karraka, we discovered that Lenik had taken control of a freighter, the SS Belfast, in place of his own Miran’s Tifar, the remnants of which were discovered crashed on the planet. While the team separated to scan for survivors, I was targeted by Lenik’s group and taken hostage. He wanted the code to gain control of the Montreal, but I was able to prevent him from getting it.

However, in a most unfortunate turn of events, Lenik set the Belfast on a collision course with the planet and we were forced to sacrifice the Montreal to prevent a disaster of astronomical proportions. If we’d failed, it would have devastated the Shoals and the Federation for years to come.

In light of the Montreal’s destruction, Commander Mei’konda has been summoned for a court-martial. Though I understand it’s standard procedure when a ship is destroyed, it’s more difficult when it’s someone you’ve worked with day in and day out for nearly two years. I’ve provided my name and contact information to the officer representing Mei in case there's a need for a character testimony.

AFTERSHOCK

Engineering Officer's Log, Stardate 239407.07

Antor II is a mess. Tragic earthquakes caused by subspace rifts have rocked the planet, leaving a portion of the planet's domes uninhabitable. This has resulted in overcrowding and has led to violence on the planet's surface. Two bombings have taken the lives of many and has left many more in serious condition. Teams are still searching through the rubble for survivors. I've been assigned to work with Commander Blair and Lieutenant Commander Walker, our task: to rebuild the domes that housed the planet's population. We've come to the conclusion that once temporary housing has been established, it would be more efficient to come up with a design that would better withstand any future natural disasters.

Lael Rosek4.png

Lael Rosek

Engineering Officer's Log, Stardate 239408.04

We were getting things set up in the mines when Commander Walker sent Commander Blair and I out to retrieve the antimatter from Commander Kelrod's team. Unfortunately, a cave-in occurred and effectively trapped both Lieutenant Thoran and Commander Walker behind a wall of rock. We have no idea of their status since something in the composition of the rock is blocking communicators. Working with Commander Kelrod's team, we've devised a plan to beam the rocks away a little at at time while establishing support beams along the way to prevent further cave-ins. In an attempt to establish some sort of communication, I've jury-rigged my communicator to send a morse code message on repeat using the chirps from the commbadge itself: S-T-A-N-D pause B-A-C-K. I had hoped that one of our missing colleagues would be able to use their communicator to respond in kind, but so far we haven't heard anything. With their already poor air supply decreasing, I'm afraid that if we don't act soon, we'll be recovering corpses instead.

As Governor Blackhurst was preparing to give her speech, the Veritas was attacked by Romulan and Cardassian ships. While this attack was underway, individuals who had been able to successfully bring aboard otherwise innocuous items constructed weapons. The facts of the situation indicate they were planning the onboard attack as both an attempt to rid the region of Starfleet interference, which they believed to be a threat to the stability of their world. Further evidence points to an attempt Governor Blackhurst's life because she supported Starfleet officers aiding the planet in it's distress. We were unable to apprehend the individual who claimed responsibility for the attacks on Antor II. He remains elusive and at large in the region. Only time will tell if we will eventually be able to track him down and put a stop to his acts of mass murder and terrorism.

Personal Log, Stardate 239501.09

Though the sting of Alex's sudden departure hasn't quite faded, recent events have given me something to look forward to. Yesterday, the Captain promoted me to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. It was bittersweet in a way, given both Alex's absence and Chythar's struggles to regain his rank, but today is a new day and I'm thoroughly excited about the possibilities. Never would I have imagined a year ago after having returned from a year in hell that I would see this day. It continues to amaze me how much difference time has made in healing old wounds. Maddy, my young ward (and I hope soon, my adopted daughter) has given me so much strength. Being responsible for her has pushed me to overcome my fears. Another blessing in disguise that I hadn't counted on is Jon. He's been amazingly supportive and patient as I try to be better at opening up to and trusting others. I hope that progress continues as I seek guidance from Evan Delano on gaining better control over my emotions and as I attempt to build a trust with Commander Walker.

I've been asked to lead an Engineering team to the USS Astraeus to help with repairs in hopes of getting the ship stable enough to at least tow it out. I've selected Lieutenant Anjar Thoran and Crewman Recruit Tasnim Shandres to accompany me. Both are skilled Engineers and are very dedicated to their duties. I have no doubt they will be valuable assets in achieving our objective.

We’ve made some headway with our investigations into the Romulan element Reskariaehhrr, but most of what we have is based on simulations. As easy as it would be to just use bits of the box for further study, I can only imagine that the Captain and Headquarters want it intact. This really leaves little option but to take a team down to the planet in hopes of finding enough of the element to continue investigating its properties as well as the possibility that we could create an isotope that is similar enough in composition to its parent while being easier to replicate.

Personal Log, Stardate 239509.04

Though I wasn’t here for much of what transpired during the crew’s last mission, and as tempting as it is to skip the awards ceremony tonight, I feel a certain obligation to attend regardless, if not to support my friends and colleagues...to acknowledge their efforts. What’s making me the most reluctant to attend is Alex. There’s a good chance that the Captain will be formally announcing his transfer tonight.Though I support him and anything that will make him happy, it also saddens me to see him go. He’s been an amazing friend to me these past months and has been an ear when I’ve needed it. With Chythar taking a neutral stance on my relationship with Jon, Alex’s honesty and perspective has been helpful. I’m going to miss him, but I have faith that we’ll serve together again someday.

With all of the repairs from the Veritas’ encounter with the Borg at last complete, we can focus on the situation at hand. Captain Rahman has called for a briefing, which I assume is related to our next mission. Given that we are headed toward Havley’s Hope and the Captain hasn’t seen fit to alter our course, I suspect that we are needed at the mining colony. I’m curious as to why they would request assistance from a Starfleet vessel given how independent the people of the Shoals are and how much some seem to resent Starfleet interfering with their affairs.

PEACE IN OUR TIME

HCO Officer's Personal Log, Stardate 239404.25

Since my surgery, things have been complicated between Chythar and I. During our time Over There, we formed a strong friendship and literally went through hell together. Due to complications with my surgery, however, I'm struggling to sort through all the feelings that have come with this stronger connection. He and I are able to experience one another's emotions without touch, unusual for a half Al-Leyan and a Human. Also, we can at times communicate telepathically. I've found that the attraction that I've felt for him since that day in the Sto'Vo'Kor Lounge has only intensified and I'm now being forced to come to terms with the possibility that what I feel for him may be more than physical attraction.

With the Hocktin Incident dealt with and my transfer orders in place, I'm feeling somewhat relieved. Most of the symptoms associated with the virus have disappeared...with the exception of the limited no-touch telepathy and no-touch empathy. It's disconcerting, but Dr. Alexander is confident this too will pass and that my abilities will return to normal. Thankfully, Maddy, Chythar, Alex, and I are all on our way to a full recovery. I've noted Lieutenant Commander Williams' lack of professionalism and poor handling of the crisis in my official report as well as commending the actions of Dr. Alexander for her part in isolating a cure and creating the vaccine as well as Lieutenant Goodwell and Ensign Cumar for their role in ensuring Zogi's plan to bring aboard contaminated goods wasn't successful. The sad end comes with the decommissioning of the Za due to an issue with the Chariot-class computer core that could cause it to malfunction in the middle of a critical situation. The crew, like myself, will be following their transfer orders to their new assignments.

HCO Officer's Log, Stardate 239209.19

This was one of the more interesting missions so far. At first, we found ourselves with a locked computer and no sign of the crew. However, after being driven out of Engineering, we found ourselves hunted by the very people we were there to help. Because of the black hole, we lost contact with the Gorkon and the other teams. Our XO became incapacitated halfway through due to a phaser blast. It wasn't until we were able to regroup and regain contact with the Gorkon that we discovered an insect was responsible for the crew's strange behavior. Commander Chen was the only injury. He has been transported to a starbase in a coma. With luck, he will return to consciousness soon and be able to resume his duties. The Tharsiss CMO, Dr. Morzon, will undergo the court-marshal process for his part in unleashing the insect responsible for infecting the crew. He will also be held accountable for the mass homicide the infected crew committed while under the influence of the insect's bite.

A MONSTROUS MURDER MYSTERY

Lael Rosek.png
Lieutenant JG
Lael Rosek

HCO Officer's Log, Stardate 239212.22

What should have been a relaxing evening quickly took a turn for the strange when the Cardassian envoy, Kotan Jara, was found dead in the library, clearly recently deceased and most likely the victim of a homicide. The situation was made worse by the fact that dignitaries and politicians were in attendance in addition to Starfleet personnel. Unable to shut down the holodeck, we did what we could to discreetly locate clues as well as the party responsible. Upon further investigation, we discovered clues in the mansion's basement that indicated the Cardassian envoy wasn't the murder's only victim. Dr. Orrey and I became separated from the others when he accidentally triggered a hidden trap door. Further exploration revealed a room where someone had been sleeping and living, obviously recently occupied. When at last we found a way out, we realized that the program was rapidly deteriorating. At this time, we heard the Captain's voice. We moved quickly to rejoin her only to find Commander Brunsig shot and in a bad way. With no other options, we carried him back to library of the mansion. Eventually, Lieutenant Stoyer and a couple of others were able to disable the program and get Commander Brunsig as well as Commander Vess, who was also injured, to Sickbay while Lieutenant Commander Skyfire led the chase to locate the suspect. Unfortunately, those responsible were one step ahead and were able to escape. Commander Vess has made a near full recovery, but Commander Brunsig remains in serious condition. Only time will tell if he'll survive his injuries.

We were scanning a nebula when it happened…though we’re still not entirely sure what or how. I remember some banter in the background. It was just your average day on the Gorkon bridge. The Captain had just ordered me to back off a bit when it happened…a sudden jolt. At the time, it seemed nothing out of the ordinary had happened. The ship was fine other than minor damage. We still had warp, life support, weapons, and shields. Nothing seemed to be wrong with the scanners. Then we got a message from another ship. A Defiant-class. The Triumphant. The ship looked pretty beat up on the outside, but that was nothing compared to what we found on the inside. After speaking with a man who looked every bit like Walter Brunsig, we discovered we’d landed ourselves in an alternate universe where the Federation no longer existed and the Dominion was the ruling power. We’ve just entered Hell.

We've been in this universe about a week and a half and we're still trying to work out exactly what happened and how to get home. I've been assigned to work with Lieutenant Sevo and Ensign Shapiro to look into possible ways to get home. With little knowledge of this universe, I've decided to meet with my counterpart aboard the Triumphant to see if she can be of any use.

I've lost track of how long we've been in this wretched universe. We thought we'd found some kind of security, but that was pulled from underneath of us like a rug. The Triumphant's destruction was a big blow for a lot of the crew. So many of us are starting to lose hope of ever getting home. I feel like the whole crew is going to need counseling when we get back...if we get back. With supplies running low, we're going to need to risk coming out of hiding to find replacement parts and stock up on items for the kitchen. Even the rations won't be enough to tide us over forever.

We've finally gotten a brief respite from the darkness of life in this universe in the form of shore leave aboard a casino, the Helase. Anjar Thoran, an Engineering colleague, convinced me to join him for a bit of relaxation. Due to Jansen being busy in Sickbay, I agreed. It was nice to get a break...until Anjar and I got the suspicion that we were being watched. Thankfully, it turned out to be nothing...though I wouldn't be surprised if the casino owner reached out to Erik Jansen after we left. The bounty on our heads no doubt left Mot's head spinning with thoughts of the profit it would bring. After all, Ferengi are ruled by profit.

Engineering Officer's Log, Stardate 239202.23

I arrived at the tail end of the mission and with the computers down, I can't get much information as to what happened. Engineering is a mess. There's been mention among the crew of a singularity. It's certainly consistent with the damage. Without access to the logs of what happened, I don't know where to begin unraveling the mass of melted wires and blown circuits. Hopefully, someone will be able to get enough power to the computer that I can review the Engineering and Bridge recordings. That should give me a place to start.

Engineering Officer's Mission Log, Stardate 239205.03

After spending three days in captivity following our initial failed attempt to retrieve the vials of the virus from the criminal that resulted in myself and Ensign Tarna being taken prisoner, I was able to assist Lieutenants Asmara & Sevo as well as Ensign Carpenter at last successfully retrieve the vials, apprehend those responsible, and return Ensign Tarna to the Victory. During our captivity, Ensign Tarna received an number of injuries ranging from minor to serious. At this stage, he is being treated for severe head trauma, undergoing surgery. Commander Vess hopes to know more in the coming days as to the extent of the damage and how it will effect Ensign Tarna's pursuit of his duties.

HCO Officer's Mission Log, Stardate 239207.12

A difficult mission is finally coming to a close as I heal from radiation sickness. Thankfully, we were able to retrieve and cure all crew exposed. There will be aftereffects for some, but they will mostly be limited to less severe symptoms. The greater portion were quick to heal and are back to their normal duties. As for the lost Starfleet ship, Lieutenant Sevo and the other members of the away team were able to retrieve a great deal of information from the ship's memory banks. Strangely, the Tholians retreated quickly, leaving us the opportunity to wait for the arrival of a tow ship to take the old bucket to the nearest repair station to be picked over. No doubt it will be mothballed and turned into a museum exhibit, but at least we're one step closer to solving the mystery of her long-ago disappearance.
