Personality

Savel is a real Vulcan's Vulcan, whether that's good or bad is up for debate. He's done his best to learn how to control his emotions and convey that stoic demeanor that Vulcans pride themselves on. If they didn't suppress their pride, that is. It's done him well up to this point in his life but now that he is serving on a starship, the lack of social skills is catching up to him. On more than one occasion his lack of tact and consideration for others' feelings has led to uncomfortable situations with other crew members. It's a skill set that he is spending some time and effort into improving, while still trying to stay true to his Vulcan teachings.

Savel has several personal interests that keep him occupied whenever he is not working, though he rarely shares these activities with others. He has an affinity for music and spends a fair amount of his spare time practicing the Vulcan lute. He can also be found frequently in the fitness center practicing Suus Mahna or in one of the ship's holodecks indulging in ornithology, which is a recent hobby that Savel has started to explore.

Background

Savel was born on Alpha Centauri to Sendet and T'Raya, who had been living in the predominately Vulcan district of the capital city of Tarola'n. Even though he was not raised on the Vulcan homeworld, he was still able to have a relatively normal upbringing for a Vulcan child. Expectations were high in his family's household, as both of his parents were accomplished in their respective fields. His father was an engineer who not only had a decades-long career in Starfleet but also contributed to many prominent projects in Tarola'n. His mother, like many Vulcans, chose a career in the sciences and has excelled in it for most of her life. She currently works as an astrophysicist in the research department of a prestigious university on Alpha Centauri. Having parents who were not only Vulcans but also so successful in their chosen life pursuits meant that he was almost obligated to be just as triumphant in his own career. It just seemed... logical.

Even though he could appreciate the individual successes of his parents, Savel did not wish to follow directly in their footsteps. He made the decision to forge his own path that was separate from the ones forged by them. As soon as he was of sufficient age, Savel traveled to Vulcan in the hopes that he would find the proper guidance and inspiration for his own purpose. The first year he spent on Vulcan was almost akin to a pilgrimage as he visited various historical and cultural sites. He briefly considered becoming a monk at the Monastery of Ulann, but he did not believe he wanted to spend his life in silence, so he sought purpose elsewhere. It wasn't until he went to the Vulcan Institute of Defensive Arts (VIDA) that he finally settled down. The teachings offered at VIDA comprised the central tenets he'd been raised on, logic and emotional discipline, but were conveyed in ways that Savel personally found intriguing. Through rigorous training in various martial arts styles, the students there were taught the ever-important role that logic played in all facets of life, including the defense of it. When students completed their time at VIDA, they possessed incredible control over mind and body.

Upon completing his studies at VIDA, Savel was now faced with his next decision of where he wished to take his next step. He contemplated remaining at VIDA with the goal of obtaining mastery in the martial arts taught there, but that commitment seemed almost permanent. During his time on Vulcan, he had several encounters with Vulcans who were members of the Ministry of Justice. They often visited VIDA to receive training or practice already well-formed skills, and Savel became intrigued during conversations with them. While he hadn't wanted to follow his parents into an engineering or scientific field, he still wished to hold a position where he could contribute or serve. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) seemed to be the best place for him to start, and he began his professional career as a Deputy Inspector. Savel began to learn the intricacies of investigative techniques during his service to the Ministry. It was also some of his first exposure to dealing with other species and cultures professionally as most of the crimes he would investigate were perpetrated by visitors to Vulcan. While Vulcans were not incapable of committing crimes, it was a rare occurrence that was usually easy to settle.

During his time with the MoJ, Savel also dealt with other agencies including Federation and Starfleet Security. This began to expand not only his knowledge and skill set as an investigator but also his desire to apply both of those beyond the confines of Vulcan. After a few years with the MoJ, he reached another juncture in his career that required a decision. Would he stay and advance with the MoJ, or set his sights on another path? It was not an easy choice to make as he had found his short career with the MoJ to be professionally satisfying with plenty of opportunity to expand upon it. However the more he worked with Starfleet Security personnel, he saw more possibilities for his future. He ultimately chose to apply for Starfleet Academy and he was eventually accepted due to his professional background.

Savel attended the San Fransisco Campus of Starfleet Academy where he Majored in Security with a Minor in Com/Ops. He did well academically but it was not the social experience that many other cadets would have during their time at the Academy. He didn't make many if any, friends while there but left with plenty of professional acquaintances when he graduated. Still, he felt that the exposure to other species and cultures during his Academy stay was beneficial both personally and professionally. Upon graduation from the Academy, he was commissioned as an Ensign and assigned to the USS Artemis as a Security Officer in 2400.

Starfleet Career

Graduation and Arrival on USS Artemis-A - 240004.04

Upon Savel's graduation from Starfleet Academy, Starfleet commissioned him as an Ensign before being assigned to the USS Artemis-A as a Security Officer. The Vulcan joined the crew as they were deep into their mission of assisting the Da'al after a meteor impacted their homeworld. His introduction to some of the crew's senior staff was less conventional than most. He met the ship's First Officer, Genkos Adea, while the Betazoid XO was restrained on a biobed following an attack on the ship's Chief Tactical Officer, Vitor Silveria. After an incredibly quick briefing on the current state of affairs, he was introduced to two other department chiefs before his first away mission. Savel met with Lt. Gabriel Osuna, Chief Security Officer, and Lt. Talos Dakora, the ship's Chief Intelligence Officer, along with Ensign Flint Kader, just prior to beaming down to the surface of the Da'al homeworld to recover a shuttlecraft and two missing security ensigns. Their mission was ultimately a success, thanks to the actions of Lt. Hallia Yellir's team, comprised of Ensigns Hiro Jones, Jovenan, and Luxa Lorana, who were able to pacify all of the planet's inhabitants, which allowed for the safe departure of the recovered shuttle and security officers.

Shore Leave on Meranuge IV - 240004.26

Following a successful mission on the Da'al homeworld, the USS Artemis remained in orbit to assist with relief and recovery efforts while also allowing some of her crew some downtime in the system. While a group of the junior officers on board were eating in the mess hall, Ensign Jovenan pitched her idea of how they should spend their leave period. She suggested to Ensigns Savel, Flint Kader, and Luxa Lorana (aka the Lower Decks Gang) that they should go on a camping trip in a region of the planet known as La'kso Canyon. The group agreed to join Jovenan but were initially unaware that this trip had actually been a secret intelligence-gathering operation on a group of Da'al that had potentially been behind the disaster that struck their planet. That fact didn't become clear to the three ensigns invited until they had been ambushed by two Da'als while hiking through the canyon. The pair initially tried to appear as friendly park rangers but quickly turned on the group, attempting to hold them hostage. Lorana attacked the lead Da'al, ending up severely wounded in the process, and opened up a window of opportunity for Savel and Flint to subdue the two Da'al while Jovenan went to help Lorana. Almost as soon as the engagement ended, the cavalry arrived to assist. Commander Genkos Adea, Lieutenant Talos Dakora, and Lieutenant Gabriel Osuna, along with a sizeable security force, arrived in a runabout. They immediately swarmed the area, with Dakora and Adea helping save Lorana from her injuries while Osuna helped secure the area with Savel. After Lorana was recovered and on her way back to the ship, a sweep of the canyon was conducted, and a hidden hanger was discovered. Inside the hanger, the team found a Da'al shuttle believed to have been used to direct the meteor that had struck Maranuge IV. Once the evidence was collected, everyone returned to the Artemis for debriefing and to prepare for their next assignment.

Drill - 240005.26

The crew of the Artemis had already completed one mission but had spent most of it on solid ground. Commander MacKenzie arranged for the Artemis to undergo a drill involving simulated combat against the USS Berlin in the Paulson Nebula. The Artemis crew was split in two with half staffing their home ship under the command of Commander MacKenzie and the other half being sent to the Berlin under the command of Commander Adea. Savel was assigned to the crew that remained on board the Artemis where he filled the roll of Acting Chief of Security since Lt. Osuna, the current chief, was tasked to the Berlin.

With the crews in position on both ships, the drill commenced inside of the nebula. Both vessels used every trick they could in the hopes of finding the other one first, and the Artemis was able to get off the first shot. Unluckily for them, the use of phasers inside of the nebula triggered a plasma fire on the Artemis that required repair crews to be scrambled. Commander Yalu proceeded to Engineering along with Ensigns Savel and Vedic in order to initiate the repairs. When the arrived, all that they found was a distraction that had pulled them away from where the real threat had gone to. While the crew of the Artemis was distracted, a team from the Berlin consisting of Lieutenants Dakora, Jones, and Osuna boarded the Artemis by transporting to Elysium.

Relationships

Family

Savel-Mother.png
Mother, Astrophysicist

Savel always felt a closer connection to his mother, even if his professional career more closely resembles his father's. Most personal correspondence sent from the ship is usually intended for her.

Father, Former Starfleet Officer, Structural Engineer

To anyone unfamiliar with Vulcan culture, Savel's relationship with his father may seem more professional than personal. Even though he is not as close with his father as he is with his mother, the two still exchange messages or call one another as often as time permits.

Friends & Colleagues

Friend, Counselor and Social Minefield Tour Guide

Whenever Savel arrived on the ship, there were many things he wasn't familiar with. Life as a Starfleet Officer aboard a ship required navigating many complicated structures including interactions with senior officers and the general procedures that governed one's time on the ship. Savel quickly adapted to anything that could be explained with a Starfleet manual but struggled when it came to the more intricate social relationships with the rest of the crew. To remedy this, he sought the assistance of the Artemis's ship counselor at the time over a few sessions to explore the ins and outs of social exchanges between potential friends. Throughout this personal journey, Savel became friends with Hiro.

Osuna-550.png
First Mentor, Chief Security Officer

Gabe was one of the first people that Savel interacted with on the ship. They were introduced to each other during an away mission on the Da'al homeworld but didn't get to actually meet until the mission had concluded. Whenever they did get to meet, Gabe briefly introduced Savel to the human game of basketball. During Gabe's time on the ship, he served as a mentor for Savel while he tried to settle in and learn the ropes as a Starfleet security officer. The lessons he learned during his time under Gabe's leadership are still being applied to Savel's current tasks and duties today.

Colleague, Sparring Partner

Vitor is one of the many crew members that Savel has taken some time to get to know him. His first introduction was on the first day Savel came onto the ship; Sil was getting treatment in Sickbay following a violent incident with the Artemis' then First Officer, where Sil was stabbed. It took a while before the two spent any decent time together, and it came in the form of a martial arts sparring session in the Artemis gym. Their bout ended in a draw but the two of them started to create a friendship between them.
