The Borderlands is a large swath of neutral space along the Klingon border. Very little is officially known about this region, other than rumors of stellar phenomenon that have been said to wreck havoc on ships in the area. More than one ship has gone missing in the region and run ins along the furthest border with the neutral zone are not unheard of.

In early 2391, Starfleet lost contact with the USS Hermes, which was patrolling the area, and the USS Gemini was dispatched to investigate. In 2397, Starfleet permanently assigned the science vessel USS Resolution to the area for long-term study.
