((Conference Room, USS Veritas))

::Lael switched her focus between browsing the report on her data PADD and the face of the man now on the screen. Jilor, she learned. The leader of a powerful Klingon pirate faction in the region. Her brow furrowed as she wondered about the man's motivations. Granted, not many were pleased with the Federation's presence in the region. It was also likely that Jilor sought to destabilize the Coalition. No doubt he thought it would leave the member worlds open to conquest.::

Jilor: RESPONSE

::Once the recording finished, Governor Blackhurst's image reappeared on the screen.::

Blackhurst: RESPONSE

Rahman: So we have our culprit.

::Lael's brow furrowed. It was difficult to believe that a lone Klingon faction could cause all of this damage. She wondered how much of it had actually been a part of Jilor's original plan and how much of it had been simply the result of seizing unexpected opportunities. Either way, it was clear that they were dealing with an even more dangerous situation than she'd initially thought.::

Anyone: RESPONSE

Rahman: The scale of this attack by... "pirates" is unprecedented. And the use of suicide bombers... this is a marked change from the usual tactics they employ.

Anyone: RESPONSE

::Rahman's gaze flickered to an Al-Leyan officer and a Vulcan officer, the former wearing command red while the other wore operations gold. Being new to the Veritas, Lael wasn't extremely familiar with either individual.::

Rahman: Does this represent the culmination of Jilor's efforts or are they capable of pulling off additional attacks like this?

Jolara: RESPONSE

Delano: RESPONSE

Anyone: RESPONSE

Rahman: ::nods grimly and turns to Ryan:: Doctor, I won't keep you and your staff any longer here than I have to. What's the latest report from sickbay?

Ryan: RESPONSE

Rahman: Commander Walker's condition?

Ryan: RESPONSE

Rahman: If you and Dr. Skyfire can continue to offer your services to the survivors, I'm sure Governor Blackhurst and Director Juno will appreciate it.

Ryan: RESPONSE

Skyfire: RESPONSE

::She gestured for them to return to sickbay.::

Rahman: Dismissed then.

::As they headed off, the captain looked to the remaining engineers there.::

Rahman: Commander Blair, Lieutenant Rosek, what happened at the mines?

Rosek: ::shakes her head:: I'm not sure, ma'am. One minute we were walking out to greet Kelrod's team for the antimatter. The next thing we knew, the roof was coming down on our heads.

Blair: RESPONSE

Rahman: Any evidence of foul play?

::Lael frowned thoughtfully.::
((Flashback)) ((Antor II -- Mines Outside New Macau)) {{Time Index: Earlier...}}

::At last, they'd managed to clear away most of the rock. Chythar had determined it was safe to beam Commander Walker away. The clearing of more debris had led them to Anjar who, despite a couple of bruises and scrapes, didn't seem much worse for the wear. She sighed in relief, embracing him.::

Rosek: ::murmurs:: Thank God you're all right.

Thoran: ::wryly:: No kidding. That was a helluva cave-in. I barely got out of the way in time.

Rosek: ::sighs:: Ditto. I managed to get both myself and Commander Blair out of the worst of it. I was afraid for a minute that I'd find you buried under this mess like we did Commander Walker.

Thoran: ::shakes his head:: Nope. I'm fine. ::pauses:: I did hear something interesting while I was waiting for you all to dig us out though.

::Lael's brow furrowed as Anjar told her what had happened.::

((End Flashback))
((Conference Room, USS Veritas))

Rosek: ::pauses:: Lieutenant Thoran, who was also trapped down there, mentioned hearing voices whispering and feeling the presence of other minds besides the Starfleet personnel down there. He mentioned something about sensing anxiety from them.

Blair: RESPONSE

Kelrod: RESPONSE

Fullus: RESPONSE

Mei'konda: RESPONSE

Any: RESPONSE

Rahman: ::turns to the others:: All right, then we move on to the most pressing if not disturbing matter thus far--Mister Sepek's findings. How did the Kos'karii get their hands on a Starfleet tricobalt device?

::Lael's eyebrows arched clean up to her hairline. It was indeed a disturbing revelation and yielded a few possible implications, the most major of which was the appearance that someone from the Veritas had been working with Jilor. It didn't bode well for any conversations with the terrorists on Antor II nor for the stability of the region. It was no doubt part of Jilor's plan to turn eyes to the Federation...to encourage attempts to drive them from the region, making it easier for the Klingons to conquer and take control of the member worlds by force. The fact that Antor II's governor had aligned herself with Starfleet in an attempt to bring order would discredit her in the eyes of the planet's inhabitants. It wasn't looking good at all.::

Mei'konda: RESPONSE

Jolara: RESPONSE

Sepek: RESPONSE

Delano: RESPONSE

Tuk: RESPONSE

Rahman: Governor, I believe until we can verify that the device indeed was Starfleet in origin, we should refrain from releasing that information to the public. The political situation seems quite volatile based on your own government's reports. I fear that with only the limited information we have right now, it could stir up even greater problems based on only rumor and suspicion.

Blackhurst: RESPONSE

Rosek: ::pauses:: No offense intended, Governor, but from what I've read in the reports, there is a particular faction on Antor II that is dissatisfied with your handling of the situation. You know more about this faction than we do. Do you believe they would target the Veritas itself to prove a point?

Blackhurst: RESPONSE

Rosek: ::to Rahman:: It's a possibility, ma'am. From what I understand, the tricobalt evidence was found on the body of one of the victims. I find it curious that we haven't found similar evidence on other victims.

Rahman: RESPONSE

Any: RESPONSE

Rosek: ::nods:: As disturbing as it is, we might have unwittingly played right into Jilor's hands.

Rahman/Blackhurst: RESPONSE

Any: RESPONSE
