He was rejected out of hand and left Earth travelling around he signed on for various ships learning the skills needed to be a pilot. He was recruited by Brunsig and volunteered not realising it was a Maquis ship. After he found out and saw the Cardassians vicious treatment of Bajor he became incensed and threw himself behind the cause.
