Life on Trill

Nuvia lived on Trill with her parents and her younger brother until the age of 18, when she left for other pursuits. Her home is located in a small, rural city on one of Trill's southern continents. The city was surrounded with moderately dense forests, that offered her plenty of hiking opportunity when she was younger. She often would hike out behind her parents' house when she returned home from school before they returned from work. There was a particular hill about half a mile from her home that she was very fond of, and would take her friends to when they came over to her house. It overlooked a valley of trees and fields, broken in half by a snaking stream, that stretched for miles. She and her friends would use it as a play area when they were young kids, and for sleepouts under the stars when they grew older.

When Nuvia turned the age of 15, her parents began to pester her about her future plans, and if she was going to be joined. Nuvia expressed her dislike at the idea numerous times, but her parents would continuously bring it up to her. Her dislike of the very symbiont-focused culture of Trill, combined with its perceived lack of opportunity for her, caused her to leave at the age of 18, with a friend, Jodan (of the same age), who later returned to Trill to attempt to be joined.

History Overview

Nuvia was born on Trill on 236706.20. Her father was a city councilman, and her mother was an engineer. Neither worked particularly long days, so Nuvia was never left in isolation for long periods of time. When Nuvia was six, her younger brother Nohan was born. During her secondary schooling, Nuvia took a few odd jobs here and there, but never stuck with anything on Trill. She was very good at making friends at a young age, and these friendships lasted until she left Trill. Her parents urged her to stay and try to apply to be joined, but she wasn't keen on the idea. She left Trill as soon as she was able, bringing a friend from her graduating class with her, and traveled around for a year on a civilian ship. Her friend departed halfway through to return to Trill, as he was going to apply to be joined.

After another half a year traveling on the civilian ship, she arrived at a starbase. She hadn't dealt with Starfleet all that much in her travels, and always had viewed them as too stiff for her to be interested in at all. But after remaining on the starbase for only about a week she realized most officers could be quite personable.

During her stay on the starbase, she quickly made friends with people she didn't know were Starfleet officers while they were off-duty. After a few days however, they started talking about their jobs, their responsibilities, and she realized she was seeing the person behind the uniform for the first time. Nuvia had never realized before just how much stress all those young officers she sees every day must go through constantly. She was glad that during her stay on the starbase, she was able to help those officers get their minds off of that stress at least for a few hours, or during a couple rounds at the bar. When she left, she realized that was what she wanted to do with her life. Trill didn't really have anything to offer her anymore, unless she changed her mind and wanted to be joined for some reason. She could think of no better way to help those Starfleet officers, and others like them in the future, than by joining Starfleet herself and becoming a counselor. She applied to the Academy soon after she left the starbase.

She began on her track to become a counselor during her first year in the Academy. She also studied engineering, a skill she picked up from her mother when she still lived on Trill. She was assigned as an engineering officer aboard the USS Columbia.

Career History

Nuvia was assigned to the USS Columbia during its mission in the Piktar system, just in time to assist in contacting the Away Team aboard Outpost Alpha. She performed her newfound engineering duties as best as she could, though she had been expecting to be assigned to a counseling position. During the return trip to Starbase 118, following the mission, she visited a holodeck with Theo Whittaker to help him move past his recent experiences.

Following the shore leave, the USS Columbia departed for the Avronis system. Nuvia was involved in refitting three shuttles to make them more maneuverable and durable to the planet's atmosphere. Unfortunately, in the middle of the mission, Nuvia fell ill and was confined to sickbay until the next shore leave. As the senior officers were called to a briefing, Nuvia was called aside by the new Commanding Officer, Commander Brek, where she was awarded a promotion to Lieutenant (JG) and the Innovation Ribbon.

Relationships/Friendships

Ital - A Deltan science officer, and Nuvia's roommate aboard the USS Columbia. Although a courteous and kind woman, she is reserved around others due to her natural heightened emotional state. She has also taken exception to Nuvia's messy living style quite a few times.

Theo Whittaker - A Terran engineering officer, Nuvia became friends with him during a holodeck session after her first mission aboard the USS Columbia. The two visited the holodeck because Nuvia wanted to assist Whittaker with moving past recent experiences that had been weighing heavily on him. Since then, Nuvia has become a willing confidant for Whittaker.
