Personal History

Early Life

Nathan was born in Big Fork, Montana to Jennifer and Patrick Richards. Nathan grew up loving the outdoors, spending most of his time amongst the trees and rocks of the Glacier National Forest, with which his family was responsible for maintaining and protecting. While his parents hadn't been members of Starfleet, Nathan had grown up hearing stories from other family members about their lives among the stars and it spurred his imagination. He began to dream of a life among the stars, aboard a starship, searching for new life and technology. From then on, Nathan knew he wanted to join Starfleet.

All through his schooling, Nathan kept up on any technical manuals and articles that he could get his hands on to keep track of the advancements in technology and scientific discoveries. It was well within his second to last year of schooling when he decided that he wanted to be an Engineer when he finally ventured out and joined Starfleet Academy.

His interest in Engineering really started when he would spend time with his father restoring antique cars and even airplanes in their spare time. He was always fascinated by what made each and every part work and how they effected everything else. As a final project in his Senior year of High School, Nathan managed to create a scale model of the original Phoenix Warp ship with a miniature warp core that *almost* worked. During his presentation, the output from the miniature warp core overloaded the electrical systems, causing a small explosion resulting in the area needing to be evacuated. Even with the small catastrophe, Nathan walked away with passing grade and was able to graduate.

Starfleet Academy

It would have been an understatement to say that Nathan was excited when he was accepted into Starfleet Academy. His major was of course selected as Engineering with a specialty in propulsion, and his minor settled into Helm and Ops. Proudly, he excelled within both his major and minor fields, with only a few hold ups along the way. One particular evening found Nathan and several of his classmates "commandeering" some of the Academy's training shuttles for a late night race around San Fransisco Bay. With shenanigans aside, Nathan continued to focus on his studies and graduated from Starfleet Academy.

Starfleet

It wasn't long before Nathan received word of his very first posting aboard Amity Outpost. What he hadn't expected was the 6 weeks of travel onboard a Quantum Slipstream Vessel. During this downtime, Nathan had plenty of opportunity to study up on the facilities that Amity Outpost had to offer, as well as the crew and Command. But all of the reading he had done could never have prepared him for the adventures and people that he was going to meet once he arrived.

Going on his first mission, Nathan was pulled into an anomaly populated with many different copies of Amity Outpost's USS Independence-B. After the USS Kitty Hawk launched a probe into the anomaly in hopes of learning more and finding the Independence, the probe was duplicated by the strange effects of the anomaly which resulted in the destruction of many of the Indy-B copies and Nathan being seriously injured. While he was able to recover from from most of his injuries, his right arm wasn't able to be saved and was replaced with a robotic prosthetic.

As part of his recovery and rehabilitation, Nathan was granted access to a McCall Class Long Range Fighter that he had found in Amity's lower sections, affectionately known as "The Cellar." While working on this project, Nathan had help from two of the SRC's most brilliant programmers. The first was Crewman Ygrix, who did not have faith in the project and had even less faith in Richard's sanity and quickly washed all 3 of his hands of the project. The second was Robin Hopper, someone whom Nathan would become quite close with and would call his best friend.

Nathan's second mission, was again something that he would never have expected. What started out as a routine planetary survey for the Betazoid colonization of Idrustix, quickly took a turn as a nomadic, scientifically driven species known as the Trenvonn attempted to purge the planet of a genetically modified bacteria by any means necessary. This included putting the crew of Amity into harms way as their drones worked to rid the planet of the bacteria. Luckily, a diplomatic solution was the salvation of those one the planet, and talks with the Trenvonn for Peace an cooperation were started.

As work on Nathan's project shuttle, The Targhee, came closer to conclusion, Nathan was assigned to accompany Keehani Ukinix back to Betazoid to assist in 'ironing out' some logistical issues that were being faced with the newly reformed Ninth House of Betazed. It was here that he met Kyri Taival and his understanding of Betazoids would be turned upside down.

While being back in the Alpha Quadrant, Nathan returned to Earth to visit his family and fill them in on everything that had happened since he left for the Delta Quadrant. His family was understandably upset upon hearing about the events of his time aboard Amity and reluctantly allowed him to return to the Delta Quadrant. Upon returning to the Delta Quadrant, Nathan was able to attend the New Years Eve party aboard Amity where he happened to arrive just in time to rescue Robin from a terrible night and get her home safely before things got out of hand.

Shortly after ringing in the new year of 2400, Amity played host to several tribes of Hirogen in peace negotiations. The Federation presents in the Delta Quadrant participated in War Games with the Hirogen that opened the door to possible future cooperation between the two powers.

With work on the Targhee finally finished, Nathan and his hard work were selected to assist members of the Betazoid nobility in another visit to the Idrustix colony, where they were pulled into yet another subspace anomaly that took them to a parallel universe where the Betazoid Empire held control over the Delta Quadrant. This was ultimately resolved with everyone returning to their own universe, but at the cost of the Targhee.
