Cytarix V is the uninhabited fifth planet of the Cytarix system. It is located in the distant and strategically unimportant Galtana Sector. Prior to 2399, Starfleet had only charted this system via the use of long range sensors, although Klingon miners were believed to have visited Cytarix V some four decades earlier, although those reports remain unconfirmed. In 2399, the planet was visited by the USS Excalibur-A which had been assigned to investigate a strange waveform that had begun to emanate from it's surface.

Biosphere

Located on the extreme periphery of it's stars Goldilocks Zone, Cytarix V possessed no advanced native lifeforms. During the USS Excalibur-A's visit, no form of indigenous animal life was witnessed. An away team did observe a forest comprised of large pine-like trees.

At least six months before the Excalibur's visit, Cytarix V became home to a vast hive consciousness whose method of spaceflight had malfunctioned. This consciousness had the ability to manipulate gravity and were able to send spherical probes from the surface into space in order to search for a new home. Evidence of this was not discovered until shortly before the Excalibur's arrival. This consciousness did not comprehend humanoid life and while they possessed the ability to telepathically communicate, they sparked a body-swapping crisis amongst the crew. An away team from the Excalibur then travelled to an underground cavern where they were able to learn of the consciousness, their plight and reverse the body swaps. Shortly afterwards, Excalibur helped extract the consciousness from Cytarix V and find it a more suitable, gravity-rich home in a nearby star system.

Geography & Climate

The surface of Cytarix V

Cytarix V was a barren wasteland pock marked by impact craters and featured plateaus and highland terrain. What little water existed was mostly subterranean. The was at least one ocean or sea, the Sphere Consciousness having taken up temporary residence in a cave overlooking said body of water Being on the edge of the stars Goldilocks zone meant that it was barely inhabitable which was a possible explanation for its lack of indigenous life.

Klingon and Starfleet Interest

The Klingon Empire showed a brief interest in the planet in the mid 2340s and sent a mining consortium to look for undisclosed minerals. Starfleet Intelligence were aware of the operation but did not have information as to it's outcome and considering that, it is reasonable to assume that the consortium did not find anything of interest and swiftly departed the planet.

Starfleet continued to monitor the Cytarix system via long range sensors. It's strategic unimportance and distance meant that sending a starship was impractical and a waste of resources. This changed when Deep Space 224 detected an anomalous waveform emanating from the Cytarix V and assigned the USS Excalibur-A to investigate. After helping to relocate the hive consciousness that had become stranded there, the waveform disappeared and Starfleet went back to monitoring the solar system via the use of long range probes and sensors.
