"Down here, we just keep things running. When I’m tweaking an injector manifold, I don’t think about the Lattice Alliance, or how my work fits into the big picture. I just think about that injector manifold."

Lieutenant Commander Nolen Hobart currently serves as First Officer aboard the USS Khitomer.

Relationships

Civilians

Omar Hobart
Father

Chief Petty Officer Omar Hobart serves at the Starfleet mining facility on Relva VIII. A deeply empathic human from Earth, Chief Hobart successfully instilled in his son an aspiration for the stars, and less successfully taught his son to appreciate the feelings of others as they are. Nolen and Omar retain a good relationship, and communicate regularly.

Mara Tarn
Mother

Mara Tarn lived her entire life on Betazed, through the Dominion Occupation, until leaving upon its liberation. After losing most of her family and friends in the occupation, and traumatized by what she witnessed and endured, she fled Betazed with Omar Hobart, whom she met amidst Federation relief efforts. Settling on Relva VIII, Tarn lived a life of seclusion, the only telepath on the station besides her son.

Mara and Nolen do not have a good relationship, and rarely speak directly, each preferring to communicate via messages relayed by Omar Hobart.

Starfleet

Hael Tarran
Mentor

Commander Hael Tarran serves as the station chief for the Relva VIII mining post. He took a shine to Nolen at a young age, and served as mentor. In spite of the figurative headaches the young Hobart often created. In Nolen, Hael saw similarities to his own experience as a child survivor of the Cardassian occupation of Bajor. Commander Hael gave a glowing recommendation for his application to Starfleet Academy, and provided additional context for Nolen's juvenile record, the details of which remain under seal.

Connor Dewitt
Immediate Superior, Friend

Early on in his tenure aboard the USS Arrow, Nolen Hobart found a kindship with Connor Dewitt. Impressed by Dewitt's technical skill and rapid ascent through the ranks, Nolen was inspired (and instructed) to pursue section command.
Their friendship bloomed, and eventually Connor asked Nolen to serve as Best Man, in his wedding to Jacin Ayemet. Nolen agreed, without knowing exactly what that entailed. Together, the two men continued to rise through the ranks, until Nolen and Connor were the Arrow's (and subsequently the Khitomer's) First Officer and Chief Engineer, respectively.

Talia Ohnari
Friend(?)

Joining the Arrow at roughly the same time as Hobart, Talia Ohnari currently serves as Chief Medical Officer. The pair maintained a friendship that is usually supportive, occasionally antagonistic, and always good-natured. Their friendship showed signs of a deeper connection, when Talia assisted Nolen in learning to manage his heightened empathic senses. Eventually, this developed into a high-stakes game of "flirt chicken," neither wanting to be the one to blink and commit. Eventually, Nolen caved and tried to kiss Talia, but any further development was indefinitely interrupted by an untimely summons to the Captain's Ready Room.

Personality

Nolen is at his best when he is solving a technical problem, devising gadgets, breaking equipment down, and building it back up. He is far from his best when he is engaged in conversation with other sentient beings, be they telepathic or not. When not fully engaged in a task, Hobart can be distant and distracted, his mind apt to wander to the things he's good at. Accordingly he is more likely to lock himself in a maintenance closet than take advantage of shore leave. To the extent that he makes active use of his empathic abilities, Nolen applies them as a survival instinct: a sort of "early warning" system for social interactions he'd rather avoid.

In spite of these "flaws," Hobart is a dedicated officer, and a serviceable friend.

Background

Nolen Hobart was born on Relva VIII in late 2375 as the Alpha and Beta quadrants recovered from the Dominion War. His mother, Mara Tarn, was a Betazoid refugee who had come to Relva VIII with Nolen's father. There they raised an infant Nolen under the protective pressurized domes of the Federation mining facility.

An only child, Nolen proved precocious at an early age, demonstrating advanced empathic abilities which, as a young boy, made him particularly prone to manipulation. Due to the emotional and physical trauma she suffered at the hands of the Jem'Hadar, Mara was somewhat absent, and Nolen did not receive the traditional reader training afforded to Betazoid children. The task fell to Nolen's human father, and to a lesser degree, other station personnel, to teach communal and interpersonal boundaries. The fact that Nolen's telepathic abilities were virtually nonexistent made this a feasible endeavor.

As a teenager, Nolen began to resent his empathic abilities. Describing a "haze" of emotion that only he (and his mother) experienced, he struggled with a sense of isolation brought on by being surrounded by others. Pain, anguish, joy, hate, love, loss, and lust were equally oppressive to his mind. The emotional trauma suffered by his mother (and broadcast to his mind alone) was especially offensive to young Nolen. Through the help of the station's counselors, Nolen managed to get through depression and rage, but never quite escaped his resentment, or fully accepted his powers.

It was at this time that he began to focus on machines. Tinkering became a pastime and consumed his every waking hour outside of his schooling. This eventually got him into some amount of trouble, and earned him a juvenile criminal record. Despite this, it also provided a path forward, as Omar encouraged Nolen to focus on this budding talent as a path to a career in Starfleet. With the help of his father and Commander Hael, that is what he did.

Hobart entered Starfleet Academy in 2396 and quickly distinguished himself academically. His technical skills carried over well from his childhood hobbies, and in his early semesters he sampled a variety of subjects through his electives. In his second year, he elected to enroll in Tactics: Combat, Marksmanship and Tactics: Small Units and earned high praise from his instructors for a quick and firm grasp of all matters related to theory. On Stardate 239712.20, Cadet Hobart was approached about a transfer to Command School, in light of his performance in these classes, and a written offer was made. The change would likely add at least a year to Cadet Hobart's schooling, but of more concern was whether Cadet Hobart could effectively lead. He was not at all disliked by his peers, but he was not especially liked or admired. After discussion with his father, Nolen declined the invitation two days later, and thereon focused his Academy studies entirely on Engineering and Operations.

On Stardate 240001.12, Cadet Hobart boarded the USS Turneville for transfer to Starbase 118 for his final training cruise. On Stardate 240001.24, he graduated and was immediately assigned to serve aboard the USS Arrow as its Engineering Officer.

On Stardate 240001.24, Ensign Hobart arrived aboard aboard the USS Arrow. He served honorably in the Arrow's raid against a Sheliak mining facility referred to as the "Hexagon," and was accordingly awarded the Good Conduct Ribbon.

On Stardate 240004.05, as Lieutenant Dewitt departed to serve as attaché aboard the USS Libris, Ensign Hobart assumed the temporary role of Chief Engineer in his absence, and for his conduct would be awarded the Legion of Merit. In the wake of an ionizing phenomenon from a nearby nebula in the region known as "the Swamp," Ensign Hobart coordinated damage control measures before departing on a rescue mission to the crippled Libris alongside Lieutenant Jacin Ayemet and Ensign Ceilidh Slipka. Aboard the Libris, Jacin and Hobart retrieved a surviving cadet before regrouping with a number of Arrow officers in Main Engineering, and returning to the Arrow.

On Stardate 240005.18, in the midst of the USS Arrow's shoreleave on Freecloud, Ensign Hobart remained aboard to conduct the planned and approved overhaul of the ship's EPS grid, until, after losing a bet with Lieutenant Commander Artinus Serinus, then head of Security, he ventured to the planet's surface in search of a rare bottle of wine for the Lieutenant Commander's collection. At the end of shoreleave and prior to embarkation on the Arrow's next mission, Captain Randal Shayne promoted Hobart to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade.

On Stardate 240007.17, Lieutenant Junior Grade Hobart embarked on an away mission to the planet of Naz. In the wake of an earthquake, Hobart found himself swallowed and buried in a cavern beneath the planet's surface with the rest of the away team, with injuries to his ribs. Further earthquakes caused Hobart, along with Lieutenant Commanders Quentin Collins and AJ Cregg, to be separated from the rest of the away team, but he safely navigated the network of tunnels beneath the planet's surface to escape. For his actions, he would be awarded a second Legion of Merit.

On Stardate 240009.05, Commander Karrod Niac underwent the Trill ritual of Zhian'tara, in which friends or family serve as temporary hosts to a Trill symbiont's past iterations and allow a joined Trill to commune in a direct conversation. Lieutenant Junior Grade Hobart participated in the ceremony, and served as host for Commander Adriana Morgan, a Betazoid woman who had served with Commander Niac on the USS Excalibur-A. In an incident involving recovered alien technology, Commander Morgan's consciousness had briefly occupied Commander Niac's body, and in that time had imprinted upon the Niac symbiont.

On Stardate 240010.01, the USS Arrow encountered a derelict space station. When an away team vanished without a trace, the Arrow launched a probe to investigate a previously unknown temporal anomaly. In order to better control the probe, Lieutenant Junior Grade Hobart, along with Lieutenant Jacin Ayemet and Lieutenant Commander Chloe Waters, modified Waters' "crown" to serve as a control interface to the crown, and as a transmission receiver. For his actions he was awarded the Innovation Ribbon.
