Relationships

Charles Tyber
Roommate and friend

As junior officers, Lina and Tyber are roommates. Lina is reluctant to call someone a "real" friend, but Tyber is what comes closest to that - or is there even more to their relationship? Since her first encounter with him, she sometimes likes to call him "(Dr) Watson".

Katsim Peri
Chief and friend

Although Peri is her superior as Chief of Science, they are also friends. In fact, Peri is the only person on board the Oumuamua with whom Lina can really talk openly about her feelings. She is the one who came to Lina's mind when she needed someone to talk to about Tyber and the emotional chaos. This is rather strange, but Lina thinks it might have something to do with the fact that Peri and she have a few things in common.

Background

Lina at the age of 9 with her older brother Anders, who died two years later due to an accident.

Lina Dahlquist was born as a second child to Frederik and Maria Dahlquist in Goteborg, Sweden on Earth. This was where she grew up. Unlike her older brother Anders, who was very private and reserved, Lina was an extroverted and outgoing child. As a child she always wanted to be in the center of the attention. Lina herself had never had the closest relationship to her older brother, but she and her younger sister Malin are very close. Her older brother always seemed to be her father’s favourite child, but Anders died due to a tragic accident when he was eighteen years old. This was of course a blow for the whole family. From one day to the next, the childhood ended for Lina. Because of the loss of his oldest son, his father suffered from depression. Then eleven-year-old Lina also felt guilty for not having had the best relationship with her older brother. Her deceased brother was put on a pedestal by her father and it seemed that Lina, could never be ‘adequate’ and was not able to do anything correctly in her father’s eyes. Lina was constantly compared to her ‘perfect’ older brother. Her way to deal with the grief was to try to make other people happy and be and sometimes play the cheerful one. However, her father saw this as a sign that she did not really miss her brother as he did not understand her way of dealing with the loss. This only served to further divide her from her father. All of this lead to the fact that Lina really started to believe in her inadequacy. She has a lot of self-doubts and has to fight the thought that her father might have been right and she is not good enough at anything. This is the reason why she developed a work ethic that values hard work as she constantly tries to overcome that feeling of being inadequate. She wants to proof it to herself (as well as to her father). She tends to be overcommitting though.

Lina on the USS Oumuamua

Lina is a social and generally happy person. When she is nervous, she tends to talk too much. But she also had to learn that showing her real emotions would only make her more vulnerable, so she became an expert in hiding her real feelings behind an always happy, optimistic and jovial mood, even if she is not in that mood at all. She really values harmony and does not like conflicts. Towards others, Lina could be described as a helpful, warm and empathetic person, as she knows what it feels like when nobody really cares about you. Lina bases her decisions on personal values. In her childhood she fled into the world of books and read a lot. She dreamt herself to other worlds and places, which was also the reason why she finally decided to join Starfleet Academy. However, she did not join the Academy right after school as she was not really sure what to do. Her father also made her belief that she would not be good enough for Starfleet. Apart from that, she is quite a spontaneous person and enjoys surprises and new situations, which could also lead her into trouble or even into dangerous situations at times. When she considers someone a real friend, she is a good sport.

Sheathed Sword 2391

Traditionally, the Sheathed Sword is given to those who are injured and explore the aftermath of that event. Vanessa Driscoll (now Linus Dahlquist) changed the order a little bit of a different order, but created a narrative that was just as compelling. During out mission, Lt. Driscoll was infected with a pathogen that was, essentially, a death sentence. Over the course of her remaining posts, she explored the implications of facing her own mortality, where the only question was when she would succumb to the effects of the pathogen.

Most of us have a vague idea that our time in this world is limited. But very few of us face such mortality in the same way, with enough time to be aware of it, but with not enough to truly do anything about it. As such, it is my honour to present the Sheathed Sword to Vanessa Driscoll.
