Personal History and Origin

Ian hails originally from Ireland and grew up in a small village. He knew early on that he wanted to join Starfleet because of his uncle who would occasionally come for visits while on leave and tell stories of his travels. Ian had the grades and ability to obtain entrance to the Academy but he had had a few too many “incidents” on his school record. His uncle arranged a job as a diplomatic shuttle pilot on and around Earth while trying to help Ian enter the Academy. He worked there for about a year and a half before Ian was fired due to getting engaged to a Vulcan Ambassador’s daughter. They had been dating for about a year against the family’s explicit wishes. However, that same Ambassador’s letter of recommendation to the Academy had already gone through and Ian was accepted for the next term. Ian had fallen hard for his new fiancé and was devastated when she ultimately chose his family over him. He generally excelled at the Academy despite his shaky entrance, which earned him the disdain of several professors. Knowing that caused a short bout of anxiety near the end final term at the Academy.

Personal Background

Strengths/Talents:

Ian has a boyish charm and a knack for persuasion. He is friendly, outgoing, and influential. He also tends to be fairly lucky and have things fall into place. He is a good navigator and a better pilot. He is generally cool under pressure but every once in a while he will over think things.

Limitations/Weaknesses:

Ian truly believes that he can talk his way out most of any situation. Ian doesn’t yet realize his leadership potential and at times lacks foresight. Following the break up with his fiancé, Ian also has tended not to let anyone get too emotionally close so he keeps his relationships casual.

Hobbies/Interests:

Flying (pretty much anything), Soccer [Real Football :)], Rock Climbing, Reading

Languages:

Ian speaks Federation Basic, passable Vulcan and some Orion trader dialects, He knows a few key Klingon and Cardassian curse words too.

Likes:

Ian loves a challenge; be it a tough flight course, bargaining with a Ferengi merchant, or pursuing an “unattainable” dare. Ian loves the game.

Dislikes:

Ian doesn’t mind losing if he is beaten by greater skill but he hates being out swindled.

Hobbies/Interests:

If it moves Ian wants to pilot it. He is competent at many forms of gambling. He loves social situations and rarely refuses a bet.

Ambitions:

Ian tends to be caught up in the moment. He joined Starfleet for the challenge and to fly ships but hasn’t given much consideration to the future. He does want to try to solve the mystery of what happened to his uncle.

Education - Before Starfleet Academy:

Ian was educated in a small school in Longford County, Ireland on Earth.

Service Record - Including Starfleet Academy:

Ian has on his record a couple of minor rules infractions within his first two months at Starfleet Academy. The first was for a prank he orchestrated on an instructor and the second was for not following proper protocol on the shuttle flight course. That one was compounded when he tried to talk his way out of it.

Psychology Report

Excerpts from the case notes of Lt. Cmdr. Sigmunds of Starfleet Academy

“…While Cadet Ian O’Connor isn’t a rule breaker per se, he does believe in bending them. He sees this as part of the negotiation process…”

“…Mr. O’Connor does not take well to losing. He makes it a point to try and even the score. An obsession? No, not quite, but definitely a priority…”

“…Mr. O’Connor has never truly dealt with his abandonment issues regarding his father. This seems to impact his relationships with his peers. He appears to keep his friends and romances superficial. There are definite commitment concerns here…”

“…Cadet O’Connor lacks long-term goals. He immerses himself in the greatest challenge of the moment and then progresses to the next one without setting his sights further…”

“In our last few sessions Cadet O’Connor has seemed more anxious. His stated worrying about things that I wouldn’t have thought would have concerned him before. He truly seems to want to excel in his last weeks at the Academy. He is putting extra pressure on himself to attain excellence in his final reviews.”

Change the name of the ship below to whatever the name of your character's ship is, unless of course you've been assigned to the USS Gemini! Don't forget the letter suffix for your ship if yours has one (such as the USS Darwin-A).
