Background

Linus Dahlquist was born as a second child to Frederik and Maria Dahlquist in Goteborg, Sweden on Earth. This was where he grew up. Unlike his older brother Anders, Linus was a very introverted and reserved child.  His older brother always wanted to be in the center of the attention very much like their father. Linus himself had never had the closest relationship to his older brother, but he and his younger sister Malin are very close.

His older brother always seemed to be his father’s favourite child, but Anders died due to a tragic accident when he was eighteen years old. This was of course a blow for the whole family. From one day to the next, the childhood ended for Linus. Because of the loss of his oldest son, his father suffered from depression. 14-year-old Linus also felt guilty for not having had the best relationship with his older brother.  His deceased brother was put on a pedestal by his father and it seemed that Linus, being so completely different from his brother, could never be ‘adequate’ and was not able to do anything correctly in his father’s eyes. Linus was constantly compared to his ‘perfect’ older brother.

This lead to the fact that Linus himself started to believe in his inadequacy. He has a lot of self-doubts and has to fight the thought that his father might have been right and he is not good enough at anything. This is the reason why is developed a work ethic that values hard work as he constantly tries to overcome that feeling of being inadequate. He wants to proof it to himself (as well as to his father). He tends to be overcommitting though.

Linus also had to learn that showing his real emotions would only make him more vulnerable, so he became an expert in hiding his real feelings. He really values harmony and does not like conflicts. Towards others, Linus could be described as a helpful, warm and empathetic person, as he knows what it feels like when nobody really cares about you.

Linus bases his decisions on personal values and it usually takes a lot of time before he finally decides on something. In his childhood he fled into the world of books and read a lot. He dreamt himself to other worlds and places, which was also the reason why he finally decided to join Starfleet Academy. However, he did not join the Academy right after school as he was not really sure what to do. His father also made him belief that he would not be good enough for Starfleet. He also likes to make plans and thinks that rules and deadlines should be respected, which made it very easy for him at the Academy. However, he is extremely nervous, when he is confronted with unknown situations – like the final exam.

Sheathed Sword 2391
USS Gemini
Traditionally, the Sheathed Sword is given to those who are injured and explore the aftermath of that event. Vanessa Driscoll (now Linus Dahlquist) changed the order a little bit of a different order, but created a narrative that was just as compelling. During out mission, Lt. Driscoll was infected with a pathogen that was, essentially, a death sentence. Over the course of her remaining posts, she explored the implications of facing her own mortality, where the only question was when she would succumb to the effects of the pathogen.

Most of us have a vague idea that our time in this world is limited. But very few of us face such mortality in the same way, with enough time to be aware of it, but with not enough to truly do anything about it. As such, it is my honour to present the Sheathed Sword to Vanessa Driscoll.
