Background

Tallera was born on the remote planet Ianoria 379, located in a small, almost impassable (until recent years) region of space cut off from the wider galaxy by frequent nebular storms. Ianoria’s mixed Klingon-Vulcan population was seeded by wayward colonization efforts sometime around or shortly before the formation of the Federation, giving Tallera a radically different cultural heritage from the usual Vulcan by the time she was born.

Before she was even born, Tallera’s biological father died in a ritual hunt meant to strengthen the bonds of honor between houses - a tradition formed early to build necessary trust between the unlike species. A’trom, her father’s hunting partner, deemed he was honor-bound to adopt Tallera as if she were his own blood and take her mother, Asil, as a sister to him (as he was already married and had a daughter of his own). Though he considered himself something of a troubadour-warrior, his talent and profession as metallurgist provided well for both the modest community and the unlikely family. To his credit, A’trom was and is a deeply-involved and good father to his children - equally.

Many full-blooded Vulcans born on Ianoria exhibit slight degrees of emotional integration, made possible through a unique combination of culture, upbringing, and epigenetic factors in the environment. Tallera, however, was one of the first of several to be raised by at least one Klingon parent. As a baby she attached to A’trom first, before Asil, and as a result she acquired what would be considered a developmental disorder on Vulcan - an inability to fully suppress her emotions. As such, she was a troublesome and temperamental young child, as prone to misery and anger as elation and laughing fits. Mercifully, an open-minded Vulcan doctor studying the condition quickly discovered that a solution for Tallera and those like her came from the same place as the problem: blending intense Klingon martial training with traditional Vulcan meditation to provide an outlet for the mind and body and a return to logic and calm.

The regiment worked even better than expected, and Tallera quickly found what could only be described as passion for the ability to use logic and the clarity it could give her. Later in life, that passion would give way to endless fascination with the sciences and mathematics in particular. As an adolescent, however, logic was more another weapon than a way of life - even as the rigor of her new regime dramatically improved her temperament, bringing her disposition to a credible semblance of Vulcanness.

Through young adulthood she continued to gravitate towards her father’s fanciful stories, epic songs, and sense of humor, finding that those things resonated with her and the Klingon training she received. She formed a close bond with her Klingon sister, Miral, and earned her Klingon name when the two were victorious on the very same ritual hunt that killed Tallera’s father. However, any freedom her youth may have had on another planet was cut short by the need to marry and have children.

As is Vulcan tradition, Tallera’s was an arranged marriage. The untraditional part was the necessity for her to marry a Klingon to guard the genetic health of the community - though the prevalence of Kligon/Vulcan mixes on Ianoria today indicates the measure became common around that time. Her somewhat older husband, Meveth son of Mechar, was as gentlemanly as one could ever call a Klingon, and he possessed strong family values. Ironically, Meveth played an instrumental role in bringing Tallera closer to her mother over the following years.

Along with Meveth’s encouragement, the addition of four half-Vulcan, half-Klingon children to the family in quick succession all but necessitated enlisting Asil’s aid. While the relationship was never contentious (that would be illogical), and typically productive, it took a long time and a family of Tallera’s own for the mother and daughter to reach a place of mutual understanding bordering on Vulcan affection. After her children had grown some, Tallera started teaching the equivalent of post-secondary mathematics to the rapidly growing community of youngsters, finding that pure logic was a calming retreat from the demands of home and four children.

From that point, Tallera’s life was quite like that of any other citizen on Ionoria focused on building their community - until a Federation survey ship chanced to come in range of a specialized transmitter Tallera’s colleagues had developed. Within months, prototype warp drive modifications reunited the colony with all the marvels and horrors of the outside. Among them, a pathogen slipped into the settlement’s Klingon population. Though mild to Klingons from the outside galaxy, and anyone with so much as a drop of Vulcan blood was immune, it proved to have a high fatality rate to Ionoria-born Klingons. A cure was rapidly developed, but not before Meveth succumbed, leaving Tallera widowed.

Ionoria’s people eventually authorized their leaders to sign a treaty with the Federation that included “logical” provisions for continued cultural and economic ties with the Empire. In the following years, Ionoria saw small but significant immigration of Klingons, Vulcans and other Federation citizens seeking a simpler life, to study the surrounding nebulae, or looking to experience the still-wild and dangerous planet. Tallera, now thoroughly Vulcan yet entirely not, found her teaching position rolled into a “proper” university in the Vulcan tradition. Though the new professors treated her with regard, she never could quite shake the notion she was a subject of fascination.

A’trom, now an old but still-virile man with Tallera already in her eighties, was the one to spot her restlessness. He encouraged her to consider a new career in Starfleet, pointing out the life of an officer being an honorable use of her talents and experience, and that the Fleet would be a worthy home for his daughter. With her children now grown, she found herself genuinely considering the idea. Still, it took until Asil built a case, logical piece by piece, for Tallera to have total surety about leaving her home and family for a new challenge among the stars.

To end your bio, we're going to drop in some code here for your ship's crew template, which should appear at the bottom of your bio and will help members of the fleet easily browse other bios of your shipmates. Change the name of the ship below to whatever the name of your character's ship is, unless of course you've been assigned to the USS Gemini! Don't forget the letter suffix for your ship if yours has one (such as the USS Darwin-A).
