"Precision is the key to any and all social interaction."
a Kreetassan proverb.

The Kreetassans are a species of intelligent humanoids that have been long time members of the Federation. They are best known for their extremely complex and confusing language as well as for their ridged and complex series of social and etiquette codes that include many unusual practises.

Kreetassa was one of the worlds that accepted Federation refugees in the wake of the Borg Invasion of 2381. It is a class M planet located within 120 light-years of Earth.

History

After accidentally and unknowingly removing a symbiotic lifeform from its homeworld during their research early 2152, the Kreetassans made first contact with an early Starfleet vessel. However, the Kreetassans were offended when they saw the crew of NX-01 Enterprise eating food in public, which caused them to storm off the ship in rage, very soon after arriving. They departed just as the organism was transferred to Enterprise and took over a cargo bay there. Shortly afterwards, the Kreetassans studied Enterprise's database and found learning the English language to be very easy. Their anger was alleviated when the crew apologized and assured them that no insult was intended. After accepting the apology, the Kreetassans sent Enterprise coordinates of the organism's homeworld, allowing the lifeform to be returned there.

In late 2152, Enterprise visited Kreetassa to make up for the political mishap a year earlier. They were invited down to the Hall of Diplomacy, and after sending the Kreetassans their genome, an away team (including the captain's dog) from Enterprise went down to the planet. After the initial meetings went well, the Kreetassans were shocked and sent them back to Enterprise, for reasons the Enterprise crew couldn't comprehend. After asking the Kreetassans what had happened, they were informed that their dog (called Porthos) had urinated on one of the sacred Alvera trees.

To apologize to the head of the Kreetassan government, the Enterprise crew asked that their perform a ritual. In a ringed area inside the Hall of Diplomacy, he would have to cut the tree's trunk on a special base with a chainsaw, and arrange the five-centimeter-thick rings in a special pattern. Throughout the whole ceremony, he would wear beads in a special pattern in his hair and have Kreetassan markings on his chest in red ink. At the conclusion, he had to say a message in the Kreetassan language.

After the ceremony, the Kreetassans happily gave them the plasma injector they needed, and also an additional two spares. A Kreetassan merchant also recommended a mining colony as a source for deuterium.

Government

They have an elected council divided up into departments.

Hall of Diplomacy

The Hall of Diplomacy is a governmental building on the Kreetassan homeworld, of Kreetassa. Outside the Hall are a stand of alvera trees which, by 2152, were over 300 years old and which the Kreetassans considered a cultural treasure.

In 2152, Porthos urinated on one of the alvera trees outside the Hall of Diplomacy. Upon revisiting Kreetassa shortly thereafter, the dog's owner, Captain Jonathan Archer had to perform a ritual sectioning of an alvera tree as required by the Kreetassans as an apology, outside the Hall.

Description

Kreetassans were a humanoid race who had an elaborate facial structure. They had heavily ridged faces with a row of purple-tinged rectangular scutes along the midline of the forehead (nose to hairline), covering one-third of its width. They wore their hair long and in braids, and dressed in long, brown, embellished gowns.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Psychology

As with most intelligent humanoids some members of their species do occasionally have issues with minor and major mental health issues. These can and do run the gamut from easily treatable to those requiring long term hospital stays.

They have well-developed hospitals, with excellent treatment and diagnostic facilities that are capable of offering a number of acceptable treatment plans for those suffering from mental health issues.

Religion

They have a simple belief that some aspect of the universe itself had a hand in their creation. It is this force that set in motion the series of events that resulted in their eventual evolution.

Mythology

They have a huge library of mainly fables that explain the origins of many of their unusual social and etiquette codes that are still in use by them today.

Society

Their communities are well laid out, organized and designed to provide the maximum of infrastructure, medical, educational and recreational facilities to the general population. Added to this is the general overall cleanliness of their communities.

Unfortunately due to their ridged and often extremely complex social, courtesy and etiquette codes few people consider their world as a possibility for recreational travel.

Culture

As with most intelligent humanoids the Kreetassans enjoy and appreciate most forms of artistic expression.

Language

The Kreetassan language was the spoken language of the Kreetassans. It was relatively very difficult to master, as sometimes one word could have a dozen different meanings. In fact, noted communications officer Hoshi Sato struggled to learn Kreetassan and once commented that it had the most subtle contextual variations she had ever seen in any language. The words "eat" and "mate" were very similar, and both were done privately in their society.

During ritual sectioning of an alvera tree, the person who was performing the splicing of the tree had to repeatedly state the Kreetassan phrase, "Deelos takaa, seely estos oor-rah. Tenvla nikot pranab boko oor-tah."

Vocabulary

Tostka = "insult" Sasooratt = Roughly, "Open the doors" Hwajat = A verb meaning both "mate" and "eat," depending on phonetic emphasis; the former was conveyed by emphasizing the first syllable, thus pronouncing the word "HWA-jat".

Examples of spoken Kreetassan Kjass skjask las? = "What did we do wrong?" Hwajat ajhakjahs! = "You eat like you mate!" Jhaaratun yiitooratt loorii = "Whatever we've done to offend you, I apologize."

Customs

The Kreetassans were particularly concerned with proper etiquette, courtesy and adherence to certain, sometimes complex social codes. As a result, they came to have a reputation for being easily offended, and a number of such offenses occurred during problematic early encounters they had with Humans.

The Kreetassans considered eating a taboo to be performed privately, in the same manner as mating. Also, when a ship was in orbit of Kreetassa, it was, as a courtesy, expected to align its chronometers with that of the Kreetassan capital city.

Ritual sectioning

The ritual sectioning was a Kreetassan ritual for Alvera trees located outside the Hall of Diplomacy.

In 2152, Captain Jonathan Archer had to perform a ritual sectioning of an Alvera tree his beagle Porthos had urinated on during an away mission.

Technology

Kreetassans were famous for manufacturing plasma injectors; they were one of only a few races in their particular vicinity that did so in the 2100’s. This has not changed and they still produce the vast majority of plasma injectors used within the Federation today.

They are on a par technologically with the majority of Federation member worlds.

Kreetassan starship

A Kreetassan starship was a type of starship utilized by the Kreetassans during the mid-22nd century. These vessels had warp capability and were about 100 meters long.

Economy

As long time members of the Federation they have managed to develop many long and short term trade deals and have a strong economy that allows them to ensure that the quality of life for the vast majority of their citizens is better than it once was.

Kreetassan spice

Kreetassan spice was a dried substance used as a food additive to flavor meals. While on Kreetassa in 2152, Enterprise NX-01 crewmembers acquired some Kreetassan spice. The chef intended to use it later.

Military

They never really developed any true form of military of their own. However since becoming members of the Federation many of their people have served in both the Marines and Starfleet.

Federation Intelligence Files

In 2395, a civilian Kreetassan trade vessel suffered heavy damage when a 21st century human land vehicle collided into the trade ship. Vidaliak is demanding full compensation and an investigation as to how the vehicle went unnoticed in the Sol system for so long. [1]
