Background

Born 2363, J'vreh was initially raised in the First City on Qo'noS. During the Klingon Civil War, Tural and Mara already distanced themselves from the house -- due to disagreements with Duras -- and they cut their ties fully once Lursa and B'Etor took over. J'vreh was left in the care of Mara's family during the Dominion War. His mother joined the Black Fleet during the initial assault on Cardassia early in the war. During the course of the war, Tural's ship was destroyed and he was rescued by a Federation vessel. Tural would go on to serve as a tactical officer on the USS Hood until after the retaking of Deep Space Nine.

While with his mother's family, J'vreh was trained as a Klingon warrior, with the intention that he would follow in his parent's footsteps. He was taught moQbara', and hunting and fieldcraft, and marksmanship... as he grew, it became clear that he would physically tower over his peers. He enjoyed wrestling and fighting with his peers during the day, and attending performances of Klingon opera in evenings. His aunt began to teach him to sing and how to play several instruments. During their long hunting trips, his uncle taught him how to stalk and ambush animals, and how to mend wounds and make medicines needed.

After the war ended, Tural took a posting as an officer in service to the clone of Kahless and brought his son with him as a warrior. While J'vreh was raised on tales of traditional Klingon values -- often with the warriors together being recited by Kahless "himself", his father also recounted stories of his service alongside the Federation. This impressed into the young J'vreh a respect for their Federation allies. During his service, J'vreh received distinction as a medic due to the techniques his uncle taught him, and was granted permission to return to Qo'noS to train as a doctor. He finished medical training in 2385 and was licensed as a KDF physician by the Klingon Medical Authority. He received a promotion to the rank of Sergeant and resumed his duties with the Imperial Fleet. He continued to serve with distinction, notably serving on the front lines during the intense ground fighting to retake holdings from the warriors in service to the renegade Krax and Ma'Tag after their failed Invasion of the Romulan Empire.

Due to his exemplary service, J'vreh was approached about applying to become an officer in the KDF. After consulting with his father and several friends, he applied for admissions into Starfleet Academy instead. The application process was convoluted -- the Federation did not often receive requests, however his father's stories of the Federation and his own desire to study with and learn from their doctors and engineers motivated him to push until both sides relented and an agreement was made. J'vreh would attend the academy, as well as attending the Starfleet Medical Academy (though his experience as an enlisted KDF Doctor would be accepted in place of the internship) and would receive a posting as a Starfleet officer -- the KDF would evaluate his Starfleet record and make a recommendation on recognising his rank after the term of service was over.

There was a period of intense adjustment for everyone, and a large amount of culture shock of that J'vreh endured. He learned to temper the war-like nature that had been instilled in him and work within the more "deferential" manner of the Federation. Deciding to take full advantage of his time at the academy, J'vreh took a double major of Science (Biology and Chemistry specialisations) and Marine Studies (hoping he would find a better place to fit in among the marine cadets who wouldn't be put off by a higher level of aggressiveness and directness), and electing to do his Marine-required minor in Security. His security minor he enjoyed thoroughly, an excelled in the subjects offered. For his Marine studies major, he excelled in the physical activities -- and his fellow cadets took to calling him "Rino" due to his size and level of aggressiveness. However he struggled with piloting and the use of vehicles. As a scientist, he loved the hands-on applications and lab components of his classes, but had difficulty with astronomy/astrophysics components. His core studies were the most difficult -- not having been raised in the Federation much of the material presented about Federation administration, law, history, and their standard language to be difficult. He also learned that his programming skills were terrible.

However, he also got his first taste into the diversity of the Federation -- though it was very much "drinking from the water hose". His fellow cadets, once they understood his background, worked with him and helped him begin to integrate, and he found himself tutoring them in the Klingon Language, helping them with their biology and field medicine, and motivating the less athletically inclined cadets to pass their physical fitness exams.

After the Academy, the Starfleet Medical Academy was a welcome change of pace. He generally thrived there, and his medical academic medical studies were exemplary. He struggled with his bedside manner, and often underestimated his patients' pain tolerance. He was formally disciplined for intentionally injuring himself on one occasion in an effort to force a fellow student to perform a medical technique that they were having difficulty learning. He enjoyed his clinical rotations, and took emergency/critical care three times (once for the requirement and two more times as his electives).

After finishing the Medical Academy he was awarded his (second) medical degree, and sent to Starbase 118 for his final examination and posting.
