Backstory/Timeline

Los is a child of the Occupation having been a teenager when it ended and having spent the majority of his life under its hardship. In many ways it shaped the person he is today. As a child his grandmother, Nerys, raised him under the influence of her religious beliefs in the Prophets. During his early childhood he lived a life of blissful ignorance toward the realities of the Occupation.

Both his parents were members of the Kunari resistance cell and kept him at arms length for "his own protection". As a result he does not have a particularly close relationship with either of his parents. At the age of eight he was drafted into the Kunari as a result of the massacre at Ralaketh in which several resistance members were killed. For many years he harboured resentment toward his parents until a sneak attack by Cardassian shock troops nearly killed his grandmother. Thereafter his resentment toward his parents turned to hatred of Cardassians.

When the Occupation ended in 2369 Los found the already present rift between him and his parents to only be growing. The force of resistance and the fight for freedom had been a strong one for him and now that there was no one left to fight he found himself unable to deal with the new calm life of peace and rebuilding that Bajor had embraced. He soon found himself lost and without a cause. His great love of his grandmother kept him at home for a while longer but his wish to please her ultimately led to his personal discovery that he found no true meaning with the Prophets. At the age of seventeen he left home and joined a cult that worshipped the Pah'Wraiths. He found the welcoming nature of the other members to be a little disturbing, but the destructive ends they embraced made for the perfect means of channeling Los' excess energy and the temptation to give in to his destructive side was too strong.

Los had never fully accepted the Federation when they came to Bajor. As far as he was concerned they were simply another occupying force that did not belong in his home. When he first learned that the Prophets' Emissary was not only a non-Bajoran, but also the Commander of Terok Nor he was pushed farther away from everything familiar to him. It is at this point that he gave up on all ties with his "old" life and embraced the Pah'Wraith. For a few years he lost himself within the cult and even aided the Circle in its bid for control of Bajor.

For years he had considered the Federation an infamously cunning enemy. To him its agenda was the same as that of the Cardassians with the simple difference that these new overlords were not as forthcoming with their intentions. He dismissed all the good things he heard about the Federation as well orchestrated propaganda. It wasn't until the Federation got involved in the war with the Dominion that Los began to realize the error of his ways. At the beginning of the War Bajor was beginning negotiations to join the Federation. Los was certain that this was the end for Bajor as the years of propaganda had finally swayed the masses. However, when Commander Sisko terminated the negotiations, by warning the ministers not to join, Los was shocked and began to reconsider his views. He began to turn around even more as the War progressed. On numerous occasions he was amazed at the danger the Federation put itself in to protect the interests of Bajor.

The final step in his new life was a speech given by Captain Sisko during a visit Los took to Deep Space Nine. It was at that point that he decided to apply to Starfleet and become a part of this great Federation that was now everything it had ever claimed to be. He sent off his application and spent the following months at home strengthening ties with his family and getting to know his new brother, Dumai.
