History

Due to harsh conditions and high levels of various toxins and other normally poisonous chemicals on the planet all life forms developed in such a way as to be immune to the various toxins and poisons. All plants and creatures have these toxins and poisons to one degree or another.

This includes the Alvanians who eventually evolved as the dominant life form. While they took much longer to develop on their world, the lack of any social or political strife allowed them to advance technologically at a steady rate.

As a result they went from hunter/gathers to an industrial people in less than 500 years.

By the 22nd century they had achieved warp drive and soon after achieved provisional federation status. Since then, their technology advancement has slowed to a bare trickle and is more focused on development of different and usually alcoholic substances for trade with other cultures.

Government

They have a unique form of government where they hold a lottery. The result of this lottery selects the 15 individuals, of which 14 control one aspect of the government each and the last one is the speaker. The speaker is technically the top individual as they can call for a vote while trying to keep the others in line.

Each province submits 20 different names for each position. All the names are then dropped into a large container and each member of government selects a name from the container corresponding to their position in the government. Term of office is for 13 years. The containers are then sealed and kept till the next lottery. This is so that is one of them dies or becomes to ill to continue performing their job they can then select a replacement.

Description

For the most part they appear to by typical humanoids along the lines of terrans. That is except for their skin tone which is a light purple/pink. Their eye's are also different being completely yellow in appearance except for a single black dot in the center. They all have black hair which they wear long.

Physiology

While having the appearance of normal humanoids, Alvanians vary greatly from other humanoids. The first major difference is in regards to their stomachs, in which they have two instead of the traditional one. Also, they have a highly advanced liver which is extremely efficient in the absorption and detoxification of foreign substances. As a result of this, Alvanians have a very complex diet, but in return have a high resistance to the many poisons and toxins in the native foods and drink. This resistance to poisons and toxins serves them well, though it often makes sampling Alvanian wares somewhat hazardous to non-Alvanians, as the natural ingredients might not be poisonous to them, but they are most certainly to other species. One can interpret the Avlanian's lack of warning labels as being malicious, another facet of their duplicitous nature, or a simple lack of consideration on their part.

Psychology

Alvanians are quite like the Ferengi and Boslics, placing personal profit above everything, though only when dealing with other species. The Alvanians are duplicitous, animated, jocular and carefree by nature, a mind boggling combination for many individuals. Alvanains are constantly cracking jokes, participating in outrageous antics, and robbing people blind with a smile. Many consider them the 'Brevity of the Galaxy', along with the foundation of its criminal element. Alvanians also do not carry grudges, nor are they above helping an enemy, another testament to their carefree nature. Possessing an alternative standard of loyalty, an Alvanian might backstab their alien friend, but still consider themselves friends, expecting that the other might not carry a grudge, same as them. This attitude often gets them into trouble. Unfortunately for just about every law enforcement official in the galaxy, the Alvanians are just as capable of getting out of trouble as they are getting into it.

Operating under some standard of honor, the Alvanians do not deal in slaves, sex or weapons, and are frequently conducting vigilante operations on the side of their eternal quest for profit, fun, thrills and adventure. Many Alvanian thieves also steal not for money, but for the fun of it. This does not stop them from fencing their stolen items however, though out of a sense of sentimentality they will keep something for themselves. This dichotomy of an ethical thief is also a hallmark of the Alvanian psyche.

Religion

No known form of religion.

Mythology

Alvanian myths often portray the tricksters as the heroes, as they are not only one step ahead of the other characters within the narrative, they are also seen as more intelligent and cunning, not being bound by some stuffy code of honor or service to a higher power or concept such as justice. Alvanian parables teach young children to always be sly, cunning and duplicitous when needed in one's aggressive pursuit of self interest. As is in line with the rest of their psychology, those who are malevolent and seek to cause suffering in others are vilified, but so are those who are entirely selfless and go out of their way to do good.

Society

While their society is not truly close knit they do tend to celebrate a large number of events. In fact almost anything could be considered a valid reason to party.

Culture

As a people they lean towards various forms of music and song. Especially those that can be sung in a group or loudly with very little musical accompaniment. The only other art form is wood carvings and a large number of those are various types of musical devices or drinking mugs.

Customs

The Alvanian's culture revolved around their imbibement of many different alcoholic substances for various occasions. It has been theorized that this is one of the reasons for their somewhat unique physiology. Whatever their reasons, the Alvanians are masters at brewing, bartending and peddling alcoholic beverages, many of which are far more potent than their counterparts on other worlds, and usually some degree of toxic. Drinking contests and 'mix offs' between bartenders are common and highly publicized events that can go on for days, sometimes without stopping. For an Alien to gain the respect of an Alvanian without resorting to extra-legal matters, the surest way is to best one of them at a drinking contest, something that even the heartiest of Klingons have failed at. Gifted with a vastly more efficient liver, two stomachs, natural immunity to toxins and an cultural pre-disposition towards holding their liquor, it is very, very hard to down an Alvanian in a drinking contest though many have tried, and few have succeeded. Those very, very few aliens that have bested an Alvanian are gifted with the honorific title of 'Fedilsertan', loosely meaning 'Iron-clad gut' in their language.

Technology

They enjoyed about 750 years of steady progressive growth technologically but this ended once they had made contact with other species. Since then, their technology advancement has slowed to a bare trickle and is more focused on development of different and usually alcoholic substances for trade with other cultures. Now they tend to trade for any new tech that they want.

Economy

They produce a large number of exotic beverages, the most well know of which is Alvanian Brandy. Fortunately the process used to create these drinks removes all the toxins and poisons. For most of their history these drinks have been an important part of their culture. Now they form the basis of their export trade.

Military

They have no military at all but have developed a police force that can and does patrol the entirety of the Hromi Cluster. This force is equipped with about 2 dozen frigate class ships that they purchased from the Bolians. The tech level of these vessels is the equal of anything outside Starfleet within the Federation.

Federation Intelligence Files

Strangely enough even with the small number of large bodies of water the planet tends to be very cloudy with large daily thunderstorms sweeping across most of the planets surface. This has resulted in planet wide tropical forests and humid conditions.

Also due to the numerous toxins and poisons in the environment all the wildlife tends to be dangerous to off worlders. Some examples of creatures on this planet are; Alvanian Bees and Alvanian Tree Sloths.
