The Irlans can be described as a peaceful, pre-industrial humanoid species that were attacked and defeated by the war like Ga'teran. Now they exist as a slave race doing 90% of the physical labor, manufacturing and food production so that their masters can concentrate on more important matters like combat, wars and expanding their sphere of conquest.

History

According to their history they have had a few small minor wars over the last 1,000 years. However for the most part they have managed to live in peace with each other for thousands of years. Those few wars were usually civil wars with in one or another of the 8 equal sized regions that make up the entire surface of the planet. These civil wars were fought in order to try and replace the hereditary leaders if they were not doing a good job of looking after the peoples interests.

Normally they have no reason to fight for land, religion or politics. Land is plentiful and produces lots of food. They all follow the same religion with a few minor differences which they all accept. As for politics, they have or had a network of hereditary leaders who each controlled about 1/8th of the planet. By the time of the invasion they had expanded to cover their entire planet. They have a well-organized society and have adapted to their world and all of its environments well.

Their first contact with an alien race was with the Ga'teran who invaded and took over. While there was some initial conflict the Irlans very quickly learned that resistance would be brutally dealt with. After they were defeated they were forced to provide 50 million young healthy slaves to be transported off world.

Government

Under the occupation, the original hereditary governments have been allowed to stay in place. In fact other than ensuring that the semi-annual tribute payment is paid on time the Ga'terans take little to no interest in the actions of the people or their government.

The planet’s surface has been divided into 8 almost equal sized regions. This was done over 1,000 years before. Each region is controlled by a hereditary ruler and his family. They ensure that roads, temples, schools, hospitals, marketplaces and trade are maintained, repaired or built to meet the needs of the people. They organize relief if there are any natural or unnatural disasters.

Ga'teran Military Garrisons

Now there are 8 Ga'teran Military Garrisons, one in the capitol of each of the 8 regions. Each garrison is made up primarily of troops from one single tribe and number about 5,000, or 1 single regiment. These troops usually leave the Irlans alone and ignore them as long as the semi-annual payment of 10,000 tons of food and 1,000 young healthy slaves are delivered to each garrison in each of the 8 regions.

Description

The Irlans are a humanoid race with 2 arms, 2 legs. The males tend to be on average about 5'6" to 5,10" and weight about 170 lbs to 190 lbs. Males also have dark brown to black hair color with black being the normal. Females are built a bit differently. They tend to be on average about 5'5" to 5'9" and weight about 110 lbs to 130 lbs. Females generally have lighter colored hair with it ranging from black to a light brown.

While their faces have 2 eye's, a nose, mouth and ears like most humanoids the nose, especially on the males seems to be too big for the face. Males also have huge bushy uni-brows over their eye's. The female’s nose also does not seem to be proportioned properly for their features but it is not as bad or noticeable as on the males. Females tend to pluck and shape their brows into 2 thin well shaped eye brows.

Both males and females wear the same kind of clothes. While the color or colors may differ the standard clothing for all seems to be a loose robe that hangs down to just above the feet. They wear leather sandals for footgear. The loose robe will usually have a belt of some kind. Attached to the belt may be bags on strings, leather pouches or tools hanging from leather thongs. They also wear a cloth over their heads that may be held in place by a headband or it could just be tied in place.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

In many ways they have the typical humanoid development, however they do have a couple radical differences. The first is that they have 2, three valve hearts. One is in the center of their chest and the other is 1 foot below it. The other major difference is in their blood chemistry. Their blood is thicker than most other races.

Psychology

For the most part they seem to be a well-adjusted people. They work well under hard conditions, thrive in a community setting and have a low number of mental illnesses. What ones they do have seem to be more as a result of old age than anything else. That does not preclude unusual situations resulting in conditions that may result in some form of mental instability. The invasion and forcible resettlement of so many of their people resulting in the breakup of family and community units did result in such an occurrence.

Religion

What all the different versions agree on is that their people came to this world from the stars. They were saved from a place of fire and brimstone. A place where the skies rained fire and the earth shuddered. They were transported to safety on beams of light. They were then carried through the stars in a place that was bright, warm, safe and flowing with food and drink. Then they were transported on beams of light away from the stars. Since then they have lived on this planet, trying to prove they were worthy of returning to that magical place in the stars.

Orthodox

Those that follow this version of their religion will spend 1 hour, 3 times a day in chanting prayers. These prayers are chanted at sun up, sun down and at mid-day. They also will not eat any fish or meat. They will eat the products produced by animals such as eggs and milk.

Traditional

Those that follow this version of their religion always wear dark brown robes. Also males never cut their beards or hair. Females never cut their hair and if married wear a light veil that covers their face below their eye's. They also will never drink anything that came from an animal or that has been fermented.

Reform

Those that follow this version of their religion tend to wear light, brightly colored robes. The men will either shave their faces bare or keep their beards trimmed very short. They can eat or drink anything. They greet the morning with joyful song and the end of the day the same way.

Mythology

Most of their myths have to do with their religion and the voyage through the stars. One of the few that does not has to deal with a time so long ago they do not remember if it happened before or after the trip through the stars. A great man, a giant of a man went out into the fields and killed the many beasts that were preying on the villagers. He never cut his hair for it gave him his strength, but he was a foolish man. He made the people serve him until one day he revealed the secret of his strength to a young girl. When he slept she cut off his hair and the people fell on him. They blinded him and made him work in the fields like a beast of burden. As time passed his hair grew back. With it came his strength. When the huge harvest festival arrived they brought him into the giant hall. In a fit of rage he toppled the main support pillar killing himself and most of the villagers in the great hall with him.

Society

They are peaceful herders and farmers. They tend to live in small communities close to the land they farm and the flocks they raise for food and wool. They are a deeply religious people who take their beliefs seriously. They mingle freely. Are willing to travel to help others and form very strong family structures.

Culture

They have little to no visual art. They rely on song, dance and the telling of religious stories or myths for entertainment. They also have a number of yearly celebrations. These are about equally divided between religious celebrations and harvest or farming celebrations.

Customs

Courting

When a man is interested in a woman he first must get the fathers permission to see her. Then he must attend 5 dinners where the girl will do all the cooking for him and her family with a little help from the other females in the house. He is also allowed to take her for 5 evening strolls. These are usually watched and observed by either the father and a few uncles or brothers. After this if he is still interested he must barter for her hand with the father. If a deal is met then the wedding is planned.

Marriage

On or before the wedding day the groom must make final payment. Then he meets the girl and her family at the local temple. The ceremony usually lasts for 4 hours with 1 break for water and small sandwiches provided by the bride’s family. At the end the two will have a drink from the same water jar, then they smash it against the ground. After that they go to a meeting hall that is usually attached to the temple for a large feast, with drinking and dancing.

Technology

They were living at a pre-industrial level prior to their being invaded. They had mastered irrigation, animal husbandry, crop rotations, pottery, simple metallurgy, stone and concrete construction methods.

Now they work in the factories, manufacturing plants, and every other skilled trade or occupation with in the Ga’teran Empire. In fact they have taken over doing all of these jobs replacing the Ga’terans completely freeing up their people to be warriors.

Military

Prior to their being invaded their world had never had any soldiers of any kind. Now they have 8 military garrisons, one in each of the 8 capitols for each region. Each of these holds a single Ga’teran military infantry unit with about 5,000 troops.
