"Outsiders beware, we defend, we kill to protect the hive."
a Rothian greeting.
The Rothian are a species of insect humanoids who seem to still operate with in a kind of hive type civilization. Each hive seems to be independent and they can fly.

History

No know native records exist. It is unknown if they even have a written language. Klingon records are rather limited regarding the planet prior to their arrival.

Roth II was explored by the Klingon Empire in 2138. However it wasn't until 2166 that they landed a colony on the planet. Over the next 5 years the colony grew until it numbered over 250,000. The Klingon Empire also put a number of defensive satellites into orbit around the planet. After all, the Romulan border was dangerously close.

It was during this colonization stage that the Klingons noticed the large 4' humanoid flying bugs that seemed to always be around. Weapons fire kept them at a distance, and an examination of the bodies killed seemed to indicate they were more a nusance than a threat.

This was not true. The humanoid bugs were intelligent, with a complex society. They watched, learned and waited. In 2171 when the Romulans attacked suddenly with out warning or provocation they had their chance.

The Romulan attack eliminated the defensive satellites and the orbiting communications array in the first few seconds of the attack. Then, under cover of a high altitude missle attack on the colony, infantry troops were landed. These troops attacked, using the confusion caused by the intense damage from the bombardment to make an assult on the Governor's residence. They hoped to capture important documents and computer data regarding Klingon troop strength and locations.

The mission was a failure. With both sides' total concentration devoted to eliminating each other, it was the opportunity the Rothians had been waiting for. They moved in, seized weapons from the dead on both sides. Then assulted both waring forces.

With victory the natives went a little wild. They hunted down and killed every off-worlder they could get their hands on. Men, women and children. Using the modern weapons taken from the dead sometimes but most of them also used the 6" razor-sharp blades that were part of their natural defense system. These blades are located above their pincer-like hands on all 4 arms.

When they were finished, they collected all their dead, plus all the weapons and equipment they could, then destroyed all the rest. Then they returned to their underground hives.

The Romulans left. The mission was an obvious failure, the troops lost. When the Klingons came to investigate they found their colonists dead, mixed in together with the dead Romulans. Investigation over.

As for the Rothians, they examined the equipment they took from both the Klingons and Romulans. Especially the weapons. After much trial and effort they discovered the necessary skills needed to create their own weapons. Weapons different from that used by the Klingons and Romulans, but just as deadly. As for the rest of the technology only the communications devices interested them. The rest was examined, disassembled, then destroyed or just stored away.

The only other recorded encounter is between Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III and his Federation science team that visited this planet in 2281. His team spent 6 months on the planet and was able to make peaceful contact with the indigenous intelligent species.

Government

They have a matriarchal style government with the oldest females in each hive having command and control of the entire hive. Any female who has lived long enough to become infertile is automatically a member of the ruling body. Prior to that the main duty of all females is that of breeding and control of their male off spring for survival purposes.

Description

The Rothians are an insectoid race. They have 4 compound eyes which allow them to see above, behind, in front and to the sides but not below them. They stand just over 4' tall and weigh on average about 100 lbs. They have 4 arms and 2 legs. All these limbs have 2 joints like 2 elbows or 2 knees. The feet are 4 clawed toes shaped like a X. The hands are 2 pincers with a razor sharp 6" blades attached where the wrist would be. They have 4 wings that propel them through the air at speeds up to 20 km.

Physiology

Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III and his team were unable to determine the true nature and degree of their intelligence. The indigenous species would not co-operate and were uninterested in the various testing procedures that they tried to use to determine this information. However from careful observation the team was able to determine that their may be a couple racial off shoots that have evolved to deal with certain specific tasks. More investigation into this possibility were recommended and requested.

Psychology

Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III and his team believed that as this race developed into a sentient species it retained much of it's pre-intelligent instinctual lifestyle. Not much more is known at this time. More investigation into this was recommended and requested.

Religion

Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III and his team were unable to find any data to confirm the presence of any form of religion. However they did notice that those females that had lived long enough to become members of the ruling council seemed to be revered and treated in a manner that came very close to a primitive form of goddess worship. More investigation into this was recommended and requested.

Mythology

Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III and his team could find no evidence of any form or types of myths. This seemed strange as they employed so much primitive stone carvings over almost every expose surface of their chambers and even some in their tunnels. Some of the carvings seemed to be representative of primitive story telling used by other cultures and species. As a result a formal request was submitted for a team to be sent back and allowed to do more investigations into this species.

Society

There society seems to reflect certain aspects of traditional hive like mentalities. With out further investigation it would be hard to determine just how their society functions. On average, the ratio of male's to female's is 1,000 to 1. The females organize the males into work parties. These include diggers, foragers, herders, soldiers and farmers. The females do no work and seldom ever leave a nest.

Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III has requested permission to return and conduct further investigations into their way of life. There were to many unanswered questions and mysteries left that need to be cleared up.

Culture

Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III and his team were unable to find anything except for some primitive stone carving that seemed to adorn most exposed surfaces with in the chambers and to a lesser extent the tunnels of their underground hives. Their was no evidence of music or the understanding needed to appreciate it.

Customs

Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III and his team were unable to confirm the presence of any distinctive customs. Considering the obvious intelligence of the species this seemed both unusual and confusing. It more than any other factor seems to be the basis of his request to be allowed to return and continue his investigations in regards to this species.

Technology

They are a pre-warp culture. They have a primative culture with an excellent understanding of herding and farming. Strangely enough they also have a sound understanding of metalurgy. They are able to craft many different tools, some of which are very complex. Thanks to the Klingon occupation of their world they now understand how to make more complex metals.

Added to this was the fact that Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III and his team saw many Klingon and Romulan devices. Including power generators, tools, fabrication devices and weapons. It would appear that the native species did indeed take everything after the mutual destruction of the Romulan and Klingon forces in 2171. What was unusual was the fact that the Federation science team observed many Rothians using these advanced devices properly. In fact many showed evidence of having been repaired as well.

Military

Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III is unsure if they had any military forces prior to the settlement of the planet by the Klingons. According to the Klingon records the bugs were a nuisance but not dangerous. However the good Dr. reports that they do now have a fairly well organized planetary defense force. He suspects that they have more than just a large number of airborn infantry. However he never saw any physical evident to confirm his suspicions.

Federation Intelligence Files

The original data files regarding this species were provided by the Klingons. However Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III spent 6 months on the planet with a team of 6 scientists. He managed to make contact and verified that the indigenous life forms were indeed intelligent. Upon his return to Starbase 118 he filed a report and updated the data files on this species.

Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III has requested to be allowed to return and continue his studies. However permission for this has so far been denied by the Klingon government.

Mission Idea for Future Use

Dr. Ophiliant Baltazar III has been turned into a PNPC character in order to be sent back to this world with any crew in the fleet. More data is needed and it would be a natural mission for both species development as well as investigation into outside activity on this world.
