Vast and untamed, the Avalon Sector has been frontier territory since the 22nd century. Dominated by the better part of the Briar Patch and historically regarded as insignificant, Starfleet only took notice of the Avalon Sector when the planet Ba'ku was discovered in 2375. After the incident with the Son'a, Starfleet made some headway into the region over the next 10 years, eventually assigning a lone vessel, the Discovery, to the region. In 2384, Deep Space 285 was constructed after the discovery of the Saurian Empire and in response to Romulan interests in the region. After the destruction of Genura in 2385, the Federation began to devote more diplomatic and scientific resources to the region. They were nearly all recalled after the destruction of Romulus and Remus in 2387, and what little was left was further reduced after other interstellar crises like the Vaadwuar Invasion and the Klingon Invasion. After the Gurab Crisis in 2389, Starfleet withdrew the last of its resources from the region and the border was redrawn to make Ba'ku, a Federation world, inside a Federation controlled sector. The DS285 station became a backwater assignment, no longer the seat of a Sector Command or a branch of the admiralty. No Starfleet ship was assigned to the region until late 2391, when the USS Constitution-B returned to the region. The assignment of a Galaxy-Class starship is perhaps a sign of Starfleet's renewed commitment to the region as a new frontier to be explored, or perhaps, something else entirely.

2270 Battle of Klach D'Kel Brakt between Romulan and Klingon forces takes place. Klingon victory with heavy losses.

2375: Ba'ku Incident and the Battle of the Briar Patch ensue.
2378: Ba'ku becomes a Federation world.
Vast and almost totally unexplored, the Briar Patch was formerly almost entirely within the Avalon Sector before the border was redrawn in 2390. The Patch is home to several varieties of stellar phenomena that make conventional warp drive, impossible. Newer, more advanced Starfleet ships are able to maintain a warp field of about warp 4, but in this vast, unexplored and dangerous patch of supernova remnants and metreon gas, it is inadvisable to go anywhere in a hurry. The famous battle of Klach D'Kel Brakt was fought on the outer edge of the Briar Patch in 2270, between Romulan and Klingon Forces. Explosive and deadly, the Klingon Victory at Klach D'Kel Brakt was (some say) a pyric one considering their losses. But to Klingons, there is no other victory than a glorious battle, and Klach D'Kel Brakt certainly was.
circa2300 Saurians gain warp drive, though archaeological evidence might put this feat several centuries prior.
2322 The Saurian Empire is established as an interstellar state composed of Saurians and their conquered species.
2384 First Contact between the Saurians and the USS Discovery-B
2385 Genura Incident, Genura system destroyed and a diplomatic mission is established on Sauria.
2387 Diplomatic Mission recalled.
2387-2392 The Saurian Empire enters a rapid period of expansion that increases their territory by a third.
The only known major power in the region, the Saurian Empire is a militant, caste based society that effectively dominates the woefully uncharted 'eastern' side of the Avalon Sector. While diplomatic relations were established after the destruction of Genura in 2385, the Diplomatic Mission was closed by 2387. In the 5 years since, the Saurian Empire has annexed several parts of the Avalon Sector, increasing their territory by 1/3. The Decline of the Romulan Empire and the lack of Starfleet resources in the region were the impetus for this expansion. The Empire is founded upon a religious hierarchy that dominates all parts of Saurian civilization. A related species, the Genurans (their evolutionary relationship with the Saurians is unclear) make up 2% of the population but contributed immeasurably to Saurian scientific advancement. While proficient in battle, the Saurians might have highly advanced technology since the Genurans were capable of stellar engineering on a massive scale. it is unknown, however, if these advances were shared with the Saurians, or somehow kept secret. The Empire is controlled by an Emperor and has recently undergone a shift in political power, with many fleeting democratic reforms being revoked.
Aurix Base

2384 Aurix Base is established on Aurix II.
2385 Aurix Base ceases subspace communication and Admiral Joh'qui tasks the Discovery and Captain Waltas with finding out why.
2385 Details remain sketchy but Aurix base was apparently destroyed by the Q Continuum, the base is promptly abandoned..
Abandoned in 2385, Aurix base was destroyed by the machinations of the Q Continuum. Set up as a forward base for Starfleet interests in the region, Aurix was located on a dessert world and home to 30 Starfleet personnel. Established in the ruins of an ancient civilization, Aurix was both a valuable waypoint for Starfleet and a promising archaeological site. It is unknown what has become of the base and the ruins that housed it in the 7 years since it was abandoned.
Genura
Genura:
Unknown 8,000 Genuran refugees (mostly political dissedents or simply those who suffered persecution under the Caste System) flee Sauria and establish a colony on Genura III.
2385 First Contact between the Genurans and Starfleet initiated by the Discovery.
2385 Genura C is intentionally collapsed by the Saurian warcriminal known as Zeun, who took over the Genuran colony and altered the flow of gravity and time in the system to ensure the star's destruction and the Genuran refugees withit.
The sanctuary of a group of Genurans, fleeing persecution in the Saurian Empire, the entire Genura system was destroyed when one of the stars was intentionally collapsed. A vast an incredibly advanced construct, the entire Genuran system was an astro-engineering project designed to keep the Genuran refugees safe. Due to the extreme gravimetric sheer when Genura III passed around the 3, highly volatile stars of Genura, the flow of gravity and later, the flow of time itself had to be altered as the planet made its flybys. This also unphased the planet from the normal flow of time and within the temporal bubble that encompassed Genura III, time passed more quickly. In 2385, a Saurian, known as Zeun, infiltrated the colony and came to command the Genuran religious order. He manipulated the gravimetric monitors to instead produce more gravimetric sheer to tear the unstable Genuran III star apart next time it passed it. He deceived the Genurans and established his own cult that made up 3/4 of the Genuran population. The leading Genuran scientist, known as Dorin, discovered what Zeun was planning and contacted the USS Discovery for assistance. With their help, Zeun's deception was revealed, though his sabotage could not be reversed. The Genurans were all safely evacuated before Genura C went nova and destroyed the system. The Genuran system is know the home of an extremely unusual singularity-like anomaly.
Deep Space 285
Deep Space 285:
2384 After a year and a half of construction, Deep Space 285 is finally commissioned under the command of Captain Victoria Samuelson.
2385 Rear Admiral Michael Samuelson, father of Victoria Samuelson, is given command of the Avalon Sector.
2385 After less than 6 months, Admiral Samuelson is recalled after a dubious investigation of Captain Tyr Waltas. Avalon Sector Command is given over to Richard Hart in the interim.
2386 Admiral Hart is given full Command of the Avalon Sector after the events at Genura and his handling of those situations.
2389 Captain Samuelson is recalled with most of her staff and the entire Avalon Sector Command after the Gurab Incident.
Once the seat of an Admiral and the glowing beacon of Starfleet's activity in the region, the station has fallen on hard times and is now the command of a lowly Lieutenant Commander. While better staffed than it has been in years, Deep Space 285 is certainly not the shinning beacon of the Avalon Sector it once was.
New Numidia
New Numidia:
2319 The planet Milidon IV is discovered.
2319 Like many tribal or otherwise marginalized ethnic groups on Earth, the Amazighen (Berber) tribes of North Africa begin a discussion of the settlement of a planetary colony to function as a new homeland.
2320 A scouting party lays claim to Milidon IV and a small base is established in what is now the city of Ennador.
2321 Entire tribes and settlements uproot themselves to colonize this new homeworld. The first colonists from Algeria and Libya land on Milidon IV, renaming it New Numidia (in Federation Standard).
2330 Colony population swells to 500,000.
2335 After successive waves of colonists, the New Numidia Council is formed as a loose Confederation designed to deal only with external affairs, defense and to mediate disputes between tribes. Different and varied power structures from democratic municipal councils to tribal chiefdoms still hold control over individual areas.
2350 Population reaches 4 million, in part due to high birthrates, but also due to exodus levels of immigrants from Earth.
2354 A Vulcan spiritual sect arrives on the planet, wishing to walk with the Tuaregs in the deep desert. They are granted visas and eventually they number 50,000.
2363 Population reaches 5.5 million after a large influx of Tuareg nomads.
2364 New Numidia blatantly refuses Federation membership and any Federation developmental aid or Starfleet assistance.
2375 After the Ba'ku incident and the Battle of the Briar Patch, New Numidia is once again offered Federation membership, it once again declines.
2379 New Numidia (with Klingon help) sets up a new defense grid and buys several patrol cruisers, with several dozen fighters.
2383 New Numidia agrees to provide resources and labor to build Deep Space 285.
2387 New Numidia once again declines Federation membership.
2390 Population reaches 7.9 million as colonization waves enter a lull and birthrates stabilize, though remain quite high.
A Human colony on the edge of the Avalon Sector, not far from the Federation border, New Numidia is the homeworld of 8 million Humans from the Berber cultural-linguist group from North Africa on Earth. Established in the 2320s, the colony was one of the earliest Federation ventures into the region, despite the colony not being a member of the Federation. The colony has not suffered the wax and wane of Starlfeet/Federation interests in the region and is as thriving as it ever has been.
Sotra Research Station
A small orbital research station studying both the planet below and the surrounding nebula, Sotra was built in 2389 as the last funded Starfleet venture into the region. It was resupplied by Civilians, contracted by the Federation, for over 2 years until the Constitution arrived in 2391. A series of incidents exposed the nature of the facility and just what went on there. A small Starfleet force was left behind on the station after the Constitution departed.
Gurab
A Romulan world that housed a weapons research facility, Gurab II was the site of a high profile incident in 2389 when the USS Discovery-C was allegedly tasked with destroying the facility and the surrounding colony. A mutiny ensued over Starfleet orders and over the next few months, Starfleet began to withdraw from the region entirely.
