Welcome to 118Wiki, a collaborative database for the UFOP: StarBase 118 Star Trek RPG. The purpose of this Wiki is to give members of our community a place to collaboratively build a history of our characters, ships, and plots.

This page our Wiki will introduce you to editing. Because everyone is free to edit any page on the wiki, learning how to edit pages -- and the etiquette of editing -- is important to participating. Let's get started!

User Page

Make sure you're logged in to the wiki using the username and password that was sent to you after training. If you look at the top of the page you're on right now, you'll see a small list of links, the leftmost link being your username.

Your user page is about you, the writer. This is different than the pages you will create for your characters. There's only one writer (you!), but you can have many characters -- that's why you only have one user page.

Here would follow an introduction what to put in a user page, what better not, how to handle the talk. It could be taken mostly from the resources of the Q&A of the old new user page. Maybe a hint that new users could also skip this part would be a good idea idea, too (cause you can play without a user page but not without a character page).

Character Page

Using the wiki, you can create a very rich and detailed character page with information about your character, an archive of sims, and much more. This tutorial will show you the basics for creating a basic character page.

Creating the Character Page

Before you can create a character page, it's helpful to understand how to create a page, and how to name it properly. Please read the content of the link below:

Now let's come to the question how to use your character page. Now, our goal in naming a page is first to make it unique. But we also need to make it easy to find the page. Sure, search would probably pull up a page as long as you know e.g. a character's first or family name. But let's be honest: We don't want to look through all the Williams, all the Smiths and whatever names else. Therefore we're highly recommending to use one way of naming your character pages. It increases the simplicity and efficiency of finding your character pages by far. We need to be careful, however, not to be too specific. For example your rank will change at the next promotion, so we don't want to include it as part of the name because we want conformity with others. So, what about the character's name. While there are some peoples, lile the Ferengi, who seem not to use surnames, most people have a family name and one or more given names. Middle names, if they are not used all the time, can be dropped. Putting the last name first is usually the best, because we're using ranks normally in SIM, most people are known as something like "Ensign Smith". Last names are slightly more common in SIM than first names, so people will likely look for the last name first. In the rare case that your character is more commonly known by their "first" name, then you might want to change this a little. For example a bartender who is always adressed might be an exception of the rule. Playing a Bajoran, a Chinese or a character from another culture that puts family names first you may do so on his/her character page.

Further information about how to name pages in general can be found here: Naming pages properly

Character pages

Now that you have read about how to create and name pages correctly you can proceed with creating your own character page.

Before you begin, keep in mind that you are free to add and edit as much as you wish. The following examples of character pages are just "starting points" to work from.

Click on each of the links below to view our standard, template character pages. Read the instructions on the page for more information about how to choose the template you'd like to use. You can always add elements from other templates once you've started.

How to add Categories

Once you have selected the type of character page you will use you will need to add the following information to the bottom of the page. Read the next section carefully to make sure you do not miss anything.

All pages on the wiki should be categorized. The category tag(s) should be the last text on the page, one to a line.

The first category tag you should add is as follows: [[Category:Characters]]

Examples

Our Featured Bio Team reviews the best bios on the wiki and curates a list of the top examples. You can find lots of inspiration for your own bio by checking out their List of Featured Bios.

Help

In most cases if after reading this you still require assistance you can usually ask either your Captain or 1st Officer. They should be able to either help you out or direct you to someone who can assist you.

Your ship's handbooks

Many ships of the Starbase 118 fleet have come up with different kinds of handbooks. All of those enlisted below are meant as guides for new players aboard.

THE SDC IS CURRENTLY DISCUSSING THE FIRST CONTACT TEMPLATE. I will inform you of the results of that discussion by July 15th.

You can use this template to create a First Contact report from your character's point of view:
  1. Create a new page titled "Species Name/First Contact"
  2. Insert {{subst:First Contact}} into the body of the new page and click save.
  3. Click edit and fill out the details as you wish.

History

Ancient history

From their beginning onwards the Paelian people lived in rather small tribes. Some of them lived as nomadic peoples maintaining some communication between those who had settled down on the various islands of Paelia. Those settlements were located at coasts of all kind. River banks were places as good as the ocean's coast. In the security of flooded caves and earliest huts they developed to become a culture of hunters and foragers.

Already in the very beginning it became one of the basic principles almost all Paelian peoples shared was the concept of absolute freedom. If people wanted not to go hunting or collecting wild berries, they didn't have to. Nobody asked why they wouldn't do so and still they were allowed to take what they need from the food storage of the tribe. Some of those staying at home invented the earliest scripts, others became philosphers although only few pieces survived the following centuries. Most important was another invention, though. Some of the earliest farmers were Paelians not going to hunt or collect fruits and vegetables.

Starting at that point Paelian peoples grew larger. Tribes were becoming communities, existing communities became small towns and in the end almost everywhere on the planet Paelian towns existed. Their growth in numbers came along with a growth of profession. Still the principle of absolute freedom was strictly maintained. Everybody was allowed to do what he is best at and what he likes most, nobody was restricted from anything.

The more productive the technology behind growing and hunting food became, the more the Paelian peoples cultivated. Communication between them was no longer only available through by-passing nomads but people went to see other towns as well. An exchange of ideas took place that would eventually change the Paelian society forever. It took some thousands of years until the first electrical machines were established. But when it was the preconditions for spacefaring were set.

Early space travelling

The first Paelian colony ship was only able to run at half impulse at maximum. Its leave was followed by brutal attacks on the orginal Paelian homeworld by marauding Klingons. Although no Paelian resisted Paelia was dramatically devasted causing some people to doubt if space was the right place for them to be. The construction of a second ship was stopped until the colony ship returned and reported that they were successful on populating an uninhabitated world which they called Nemea. Almost immediately another space ship was built to travel twice as fast as the first one.

It set off for another world and made established a second colony where Paelians would live from that time on. This world was called Nera. Even though Klingon marauders came back some times after their initial attack Paelians never lost their pacificistic attitutde. They did not even passively resist the the invaders and thereby got them to lose interest after a while. Another first contact with a spacefaring species, the Ranjeen, proved more fertile. One of the technologies exchanged was warp-drive which enabled the Paelians to travel to their colonies in some weeks instead of decades.

Entering the Interstellar community

When the Klingons, at this time at war with the Federation, looked for ressourceful planets they could occupy, they heard about Nemea. Rumours of them being great hunters and constantly fighting their world's unkind envrionment. Their interest in conquering a more honourable opponment's world was great and so they decided to launch an invasion on both the Ranjeen homeworld and Nemea. In 2373 the United Federation of Planets intervened by replying positively to their apply for membership. As citizens of the Federation Paelians and Ranjeen were allowed to apply for Starfleet. Some time passed but in the end individuals of both species decided to join Starfleet.

Physiology

Paelians resemble Bolians in appearance, and are distinguished by their ears, barbels around the mouth and their distinctively smaller palms and feet and their distinctively smaller palms and feet, which exhibit longer fingers. Actually the length added to their fingers is coming from the missing metacarpal and metatarsal bones. Between their fingers and toes remained some rinterdigital webbing which isn't tensed all the time.

Although Paelians share the same tones of blue which they go through between their moultings there is a range of different patterns which helps identifying the gender. The distinctive patterns, more easily felt by touch than by eye sight, are even more distinctive. They become obvious when Paelians bluesh, though. In addition to tha the colour of their eyes differ slightly. While "male" Paelians have eye colours ranging from red purple to blue green, "female" Paelians' eye colours range from blue green to yellow orange and "xemale's" eyes are coloured something in the range between yellow orange and red violet.

Organ system

The internal structure of the Paelian body is completely different from Bolians. Gills allow Paelians to breath under water while they have lungs to breath on land. Instead of lots of organs Paelians possess a very decentralized structure of innards. The removal of waste products from breathing or drinking is performed by the veins and arteries. Paelians also do lack a heart which is compensated by hundreds of small muscles placed at crossings of blood vessels. A complex network of nerves performs all functions usually covered by a brain. Unlike most other systems of the Paelian body their digestive system is quite normal.

Reproductive System

See also: Paelian sexes

Paelians evolved to a species with three different sexes that mostly differ by their reproductive organs. Due to a certain ambivalence every Paelian can bear a child and fertilize other Paelians. The three sexes were named "male", "female" and "xemale" by Federation scientists. Males are able to fertilize females, females can fertilize xemales and xemales can fertilize males. The children of those couples are always belong to the sex not involved in the reproductive process. Rarely homosexual couples are also able to give life to a baby. In that case the child would be of the same sex.

Unlike most humanoid species Paelians have two genitals each intended for one of the two other species. Very much like most humanoid species their sexual organs also cover functions of the digestive system. While urine is poured out through the frontal genital, the rearward sexual organ expells faeces, too.

Moulting

After a certain amount of years, Paelians shed their skin. When they feel that their former skin is rejected by the body, their new skin was generated already. If not a second skin will be formed within short time. The new skin is very lightly blue almost white. It takes some weeks until it reaches a light blue. In the course of the next years it changes to a very dark blue until it is shed and replaced again.

Psychology

Society

Cultures

Like Humanity is not one culture but a cultural melting pot Paelians are quite seperated in their cultures, too. If there is to be found one culture all Paelian peoples share, it is the idea of absolute freedom. Although norms established of course and in the case of Nemea even duties became neccessary the concept of a common law, representatives, nations, democracy and many others were extremely confusing to the Paelians at first contact.

Customs

Religions

Arts

Paelian arts have developed of the people's needs. Wherever people start building houses they'll get to a point at which they want some aesthetic elements, too. The same goes for tools, early furniture and other objects. In the course of time, Paelians started to paint pictures on land and under water or composing music. But most of it still had a function. Only when Paelians increased the crop some people started painting pursued for their own sake. Others started to write fictional stories.

In the course of time, arts were at times quite professional only done by those dedicated to an aspect of art for their entire life. At times it was a public activity. Drawing or painting to music became a very popular party activity. Most of Paelian literature was contributed to by more than one Paelian. Otherwise they treat art like many other peoples of the galaxy.

Script

Earliest Paelian scripts needed to be able to be used under water, too. Very soon Paelians came up with incredibly thin stone plates. The script used on these based upon circles of different sizes representing sounds, not just letters. Paelians used metal cylinders 0,1 millimeter to 14 milimeters in diameter and a small hammer to perforate the stone. The range of 144 circles were being coded differently in the societies but usually Paelians were able not just to describe which words they meant but also the sound and pitch level. The plate's thickness of only 2 to 4 millimeters allowed texts to be copied easily by putting more than one stone plate on another.

With the innovation of computers, stone and paper stopped to be the preferred writing material. Slowly new scripts were developed using lines and circles. Instead of simplifying their script the Paelians complicated it. Now their alphabet's letters could be used to resemble an exact sound. Parallel to this development easier scripts were used for fast notes, too. In the end these simplified still phonetic phonetic alphabets replaced the more complicated onces with more than 3,000 letters each.

Sciences

Chronology

Instead of history in a traditional Human understanding Paelians came up with a science relatively unique. Chronologist's field of work could be considered a combination of Human historians and archaeologists. But they do not just dig up ancient items and artifacts and determine their age but thereby determine the current Paelian year. Paelians believe strictly in the importance of the year one to be the real year one of the Paelian people. Whenever chronologists reveal that their history has started some Paelia years earlier, all the dates of Paelian history do change. Although nobody enforced this system of course, about 99% of all Paelians were absolutely fine with it.

Public institutions

Since the Paelian history declined the idea of a state, there can be no governement or executive branch found. Yet there are some institutions founded by Paelians that could be considered as public. Their influence differs between the different peoples on Paelia, Nera and Nemea. Never has any of these institutions claimed political might. As the Bolians society in general, they work on the basis of complete individual freedom.

Town center watch

Beginning as a family clan's storage of goods that were willingly exchanged, these storages developed soon to the centers of early settlements. Any Paelian (and later any alien) is allowed to hand over what he/she/xe likes to give to the community or take whatever he/she/xe thinks to need. All kinds of goods could be delivered and later even services (e.g. cooking fresh meals)could be performed. Since the life period of some goods differ very much and Paelians would not like to waste e.g. decayed food, in many cultures some Paelians volunteered to watch out for the goods stored at the town center. This way they ensured that goods that could no longer be stored were used either by the watch or by people to whom the watch delivered these goods.

When the range of Paelian goods increased the town center watch changed, too. Instead of central storages the Paelians developed smaller storages for specific types of goods. The watch had to specialize to understand their storages' goods' qualities and life periods. Soon they started to offer advise for the 'customers' coming to their store. Although Paelians never developed any kind of currency and the exchange managed by the watch was absolutely non-capitalistic, Starfleet officers at first contact mistook the watch for Salesmen.

Political debate circles

The political debate circles resemble the closest thing to a government or to a parliamentary. Many Paelian peoples have developed such fora of exchange on pressing matters. In most cases these circles met originally near the town centers and simply discussed social issues. In early times people randomly discussed how to stop e.g. a famine or how to expand the town. They had no power to put their ideas into practice than their own. Therefore they invited other people that were not interested in those discussions themselves. To handle these masses of people, they couldn't meet at the town centers and often they built assembly halls. Many public institutions originate are the result of a circle's discussion.

At first contact, Starfleet thought those circles to be either parliamentary or government of the Paelian people. It took some time until they realized that they didn't encounter basic democrazy but just people discussing common problems. Federation scholars needed very long to understand how such institutions could work without any political power.

Tribunal of conscience

Another important element of many Paelian cultures are institutions which Starfleet translated as tribunals of conscience. In these very special courts, judgedment would only be passed on people on basis of their own conscience. Believing in absolute freedom, nobody could be commited to a trial. Without any specific defintion of crime anybody who think to have acted badly could come here.

In ancient times, the methods how to get an idea of someone's morality differed very much from culture to culture. At some places, long questionnaires would have to be filled in, at other places people had to judge case examples. Science opened new ways, though. Nowadays, special scans would be arranged to find out almost without any kind of inaccurateness.

Only if someone had come freely to the tribunal, introduced his/her/xer conscience to the three judges, he/she/xe could confess his/her/xer crimes. Afterwards, the three judges would decide what would be the appropriate punishment according to the committer's conscience. Depending on the culture, it would be left to the committer if the judgement would be executed or not. Some Paelians argued that the knowledge of the punishment could change someone's mind and that it would only be fair that he must freely decide it to be executed. Others countered that only because someone is scared by the punishment, his/her/xer decision to attent a trial should not be disrespected. Therefore the punishment would be executed even against someone's free will.

Schools

Instead of an educational system, Paelians preferred a lose concept of different institutions. Anybody thinking themselves capable to teach could become a teacher and anybody willing to come to the lessons, could come. Although no courses were obligatory, attending school became usual for most Paelians. The free choice of courses caused some problems but it allowed Paelians also to specialice in their professions very much.

Everybody could hand in papers at all kinds of courses, everybody could present those to class, everybody could ask for a talk with the teacher. But there were no class exercises of any kind. Teachers did not test their students trusting in their decision to freely intensify their studies.

Until now it is a very common problem for Paelians to attend Starfleet Academy. Acceptance tests for Starfleet Academy are quite challenging for someone coming from a culture that didn't have tests at all. The diversity of knowledge tested by Starfleet proved also quite stressing for Paelian applicants. After 30 years without any succeeding applicant for Starfleet Academy, on all three Paelian homeworlds special schools were founded to prepare Starfleet Academy applicants for the acceptance tests. In the beginning these institutions had a hard time but became accepted in the course of time.

Sexes

The Paelian species is aware of three different main sexes while there exists a minority of more sexes including various forms of intersexes. So far Paelian scientists identified at least 14 genetically different sexes. Althought there were biologists - mostly Starfleet - trying to relate some of these sexes to the three main sexes they identified earlier. Either they failed or their results lacked compliance with the scientific rules.

When the Paelians made contact with the Federation, Starfleet scientists were quite interested in the three Paelian sexes naming them: male, female and xemale. It took decades until they realized that by reusing male and female their naming had caused a huge misunderstanding of the Paelian sexes by wide parts of the Federation. When the mistake was proposed to be corrected, the terms had been established already.

The three most common Paelian sexes share some feature. Each of them has two genitals. They are located next to each other at the position usual for Humanoids. One of them is able to fertilize while the other one is able to receive fertilization. All three sexes can do both, receive pregnancy as well as impregnate.

Paelians that were named "male" featured one of the secondary sexual characteristics of Human males. Average Paelians belonging to this sex were relatively higher than the females and xemales at least at the time when Starfleet defined their genders. Their body shape didn't differ very much from females or males. Neither did the skeleton reveal any distinctive characteristics.

Paelian "females" were a relatively shorter on average compared to males and xemales at the point when Starfleet named the three Paelian sexes. Their shape and skeleton is identical to xemale or female ones. Far too long Starfleet insisted that their faces were looking distinctively feminine. Due to a lack of interest of local scientists on suck topics it took over 30 years for a study to be published that revealed that both "feminine" and "masculine" faces existed in all three genders.

What Starfleet decided to name "xemale" is a third sex. Although they on average are shorter than males and females, there are regions on Paelia, Nemea and Nera where many of the xemales are higher than male or female Paelians. At other places, they are the shortest. The average height led to a very wrong picture of how to differ the Paelian sexes. Their bodies look like their male and female counterparts' bodies.

When Starfleet stopped trying to insist on its very own theories and started to include local scientits in their search for answeres the Paelians revealed the true secondary sexual characteristics. While shape, height or weight were absolutely no characteristics, the colour of their eyes and the patterns of their skins differed slightly. While "male" Paelians had eye colours ranging from red purple to blue green, "female" Paelians' eye colours ranged from blue green to yellow orange and "xemale's" eyes were coloured something in the range between yellow orange and red violet. The distinctive patterns, more easily felt by touch than by eye sight, are even more distinctive. They become obvious when Paelians bluesh, though.

In contrast to Humans and other species there is no such thing as a menopause but Paelians lose interest in sexual interaction at the age of 60 to 70. This process is stimulated by hormones that also affect the Paelians' senses. Since the hormonal balance is far more individual for Paelians, no general statements can be made about how it changes the three sexes.

Paelian History

The antecessing species that later became the Paelians originally inhabited the oceans of their first homeworld, Paelia. They were gregarious sentient beings living in swarms of about 50 to 90 Prae-Paelians. Due to change of the tectonic plates of Paelia, the continents and oceans ceased to exist. Instead huge archipelagos developed while some single islands remained as remnants of what used to be Paelia's continents. Due to the change of Paelia's surface, many food sources of the Prae-Paelians ran dry. The relative large predators of the deep ocean had no chance hunting fishes that could now easily escape to the waters between the islands where the Prae-Paelians couldn't follow.

This massive change of environment led to the development of the Proto-Paelians. Only half as big as their predecessor they could easily sweep through the archipelagos where their food hid. But still they lacked food sources. Very slowly some Proto-Paelians developed lungs additionally to their gills. These had better chances to survive and eventually this new species, the earlies Paelians, replaced the Proto-Paelians.

Slowly the new species developed at the coasts of the small and bigger islands of Paelia. They started as swimming nomads migrating from one island to another. After some thousand years passed some of the Paelian peoples started to settle. Especially those swarms with a taste for vegetables next to fish and meat settled down. Living in holes, caves or nests build by themselves they began growing agricultural plants while smaller parts of the swarm continued to hunt on land and under water.

Those early settlements started to differentiate professions. Of course hunters would still help at harvest but nontheless there were soon some professional farmers who took care of the seeding and oversaw the harvest. Other Paelians experimented with different techniques how to serve their new foods best. When most swarms decided that they'd need to share their hunted fish, meat, grain and other plants, they created the town centers where they would gather all their goods and from where everyone could take whatever one would need.

Not long after these first settlements were established they started to produce tools and other goods. The nomadic swarms arranged trade between the different swarms that had settled down. This way technical progress sooner or later spread among all Paelians. Although most swarms expanded their in most cases natural dwellings the population of the swarms overcame the living space. While some of the offspring joined nomadic swarms or founded their own swarms, people argued that they need to find ways to expand their settlements. First huts were constructed and next to rivers and streams first villages developed.

Not long after the first settlements grew to villages and small towns, swarms living close to each others fused. When the natural waterways weren't big enough to cover the needs of the Paelians they started building canals. On the newly created islands they build more huts and first houses. In the long run, basements and upper floors were developed to provide even more living space for the Paelians. Space was badly needed indeed because the farmers and hunters provided more and more food for the community by constantly new reinventing their methods.

The beginning of urban societies neccessitated more specialized professions. Who would build the houses if not construction workers. Who would keep the waterways and pipes clean if not plumbers. Who would produce the metal goods they needed if not smiths. The more professions developed, the less one central town center could provide enough space to store all the goods produced. In larger towns mutliple centers were created only to store goods of one kind. Metalware, furs, leather and draperies, wood products and food were the earliest seperate stores. When the cities became even bigger instead of centers people started to build smaller stores with a more specialized range of products and many of the former town centers became marketplaces. The people still kept up the concept of freely giving and taking any goods.

It was a long road from those early artisanry to Paelian industrialization. It was a road they constantly sought, though. Of course it was hard for the creators of the earliest manufactories to find workers. They had to convince them to do the work they asked them to do. Only when the Paelians saw the advantages of those factories they started to believe in the neccessity of such institutions. In order not to exploit their workers, 1 and 2 hour shifts became quite usual for factories. Factory workers would work in other professions as well where they could manually work on one product from the beginning to the end. This way it was ensured people would not fatigue because they only work at one production step.

In the course of history, some inventions led to great problems like pollution, overproduction, famine and other crises all being successfully overcome. Innovation but also revision of methods usually provided solutions for the Paelian peoples. Although from early times onwards scientists, explorers and inventors tried to give advice, some tragedies were irrevisible. For example their hunts caused the extinction of a species of carnivore fish which was later revealed to be related to their antecessor species, the Proto-Paelians. None of these catastrophes prohibited the Paelians from a progress that led to spacefaring in the very end, though.

In the early 17th century, first Paelian spaceships reached one of the four Paelian moons. In the 20st century, on all four natural sattelites people had settled. During this time, they had also managed to explore the wonders of their own solar system. While the spaceships they used for all these tasks, were not bigger than 100 meters, some Paelian scientists had started to propose building gigantic spaceships since the 19th century. The decision to participate in such an undertaking was not made easily. Even in the 21st century when the construction of the first giant spaceship began, many Paelians remained sceptic until the construction was finished. It took over 50 years to finish the first spaceship that was supposed to leave the Pael system.

In 1974 it set off with about 15,000 Paelians aboard. The spaceship consisting of three rings all connected by a single bulky cross member to a sphere in the middle. All of the ship's impulse engines were located at the three rings. Due to the rings' ability to swiftly move around the sphere the ship could be easily maneuvered in space. In the sphere around two thirds of the travelers lived while the technicians and the crew lived in the rings. Due to the length of their journey there was a constant exchange of people volunteering to work in the rings and people retiring to the sphere. Living inside the ship's core was appreciated because the sphere was a biosphere resembling Paelia. During some peoriods the conept of only volunteers working in the rings could not be kept up. Some historians assume that this was one major event to cause a change in the Paelian emigrants' social structure.

Their arrival at a class-M world in 2092 was another milestone in Paelian history. From now on there were no longer single Paelian sub-cultures but also two Paelian kinds seperated by a traveling distance of over 100 years. The foundation of Nemea proved to be harder than expected. Although they had brought much of Paelia's flora and fauna along it took far over 50 years to finally establish nature as they knew it. Had they known, it would cause a deadly war between native flora and fauna and alien nature, they might have reconsidered importing Paelian animals and plants. Containing DNA samples and a detailed report about the colonisation of Nemea their spaceship set off to Paelia in 2151.

When it returned to the Pael system in 2243, the Paelian had known of its return many years before due to a major improvement of sensor range. While they had waited for the ship to return, the Paelians had also improved the construction plans of their first spaceship. One of the major improvements, the new ship would feature flora and fauna in the rings, too. The ship's speed was also greatly increased. Given the advice not to introduce animals or plants from Paelia to their new homeworld, the second colony vessel set off with about 18,000 Paelians aboard in 2344.

In 2381 the second big spaceship reached a world that Paelian scientists had watched for quite a while and estimated to feature all vital characteristics necessary for Paelians. Arriving there, Nera appeared like paradise to the Paelian colonists. As soon as the first settlements were constructed they sent their ship homeward with a report so that more people could come to this world. Not just that there was an abundant amount of water but also were there only violet and blue plants. Paelians had known only green plants as they exist on most planets and were highly surprised by the beauty of Nera's colours.

Unknown to the first Paelian emigrants, Paelia had been under attack four times by Klingon marauders while the spaceships were traveling to far away worlds. The Klingons had attacked first in 1988, some years after the first colony ship had left the Pael system. They judged the Paelian homeworld to be an interesting target due to its high level of technology. But very soon they noticed that the Paelians didn't resist at all. Instead they tried, so the Klingons thought, to bribe them by offering them goods. Affected by this misunderstanding three birds of prey wiped out entire cities by torpedo air raid. Afterwards they abused many of the Paelians, killed others and damaged further settlings while plunderin and marauding all on Paelia's surface. But although they wiped out three rather large cities, extremely damaged others and killed many thousands, not a single Paelian fought against the Klingons. Not just because Paelians didn't have any weaponry but also because it was not part of their culture to fight. They didn't see any need to prolong the evil of war as it was waged for the first time against them.

In 1995 the very same Klingon marauders returned. When they didn't encounter any sort of resistance again they stopped attacking Paelia. Only very few people were killed this time. These Klingons didn't seem to see any honour in slaying defenceless people.

Later that year other Klingons came to Paelia. Obviously, the marauders had spread a rumour about Paelia. These Klingons didn't fight very long either but they plundered for months. Hundreds of Paelians starved while the Klingons feasted on the Paelian food. Others abused and killed for fun. It took five and a half months until the Klingons were fed up with the Paelians leaving them alone. Without any of the Klingons being aware of it, the Paelians had resisted this time. They had stored food at secret storages waiting for their oppressor to leave. When the Klingons finally set off assuming to leave a dying world behind, the Paelians could have breathed a sigh of relief (if they had known that gesture).

Afterwards, no Klingons or other agressors returned for a very long time. Instead, the Paelian ships did encounter a species. The Weenjens were a peaceful species that had decided to visit one of the Paelian homeworlds. Their first trip led them to Nemea, the world where Paelians behaved a bit different but still offered hospitality to the Weenjens. They exchanged some goods in ancient Paelian manner although the Weenjen were a bit confused the lack of money. Nemean Paelians had developed some duties like twenty years as a farmer but they had not come up with currencies keeping up their Paelian heritage.

When the Weenjens encountered the Paelian Paelians and the Neran Paelians they didn't believed it to be the same species. While life on Nemea was full of discomfort and every pound of food was fought for Paelia and Nera seemed to be paradises by contrast. None of the Paelians knew how extreme the conditions on the other planets were of course due to their lack of warp travel. Only when the Weenjens allowed them to use some vessels of their own, the Paelians could see how terrible life was on Nemea. But even though life was tough on the first Paelian colony it had created a very special kind of Paelians.

By closing long term trading contracts - its neccessity was not understood too well by the Paelians - the Weenjens and Paelians became close allies. They exchanged star charts, technology and experiences with other spacefaring peoples. The Weenjens, a species as peaceloving as the Paelians but eagerly defending what is theirs, had made as bitter experiences with the Klingons as the Paelians had. This shared fear for the Klingons would become a main reason for both species to join the Federation.

The last Klingon attack on a Paelian world occured late in their history, shortly before joining the Federation. It occured in 2372 on Nemea, the first colony. A full invasion fleet and army had come for the world whose tough hunters and defenders against the beasts of Nemea had earned them a less peaceful reputation. At least that was the Klingon's speculation hearing about these Paelians during one of their raids on the Weenjens. But even though the Paelians were indeed very different from other Paelians they did not resist the Klingons actively. They didn't share their goods and hid what they had toilsome produced but they did not fight. But the Weenjens did so when their sensors had noticed the Klingon presence in the Nemea system. It was a two day lasting battle in the Nemea system between two uneven opponents. The small Weenjen fighters maneuvered better than the Klingon cruisers and birds of prey but in the end their lack of fire power was their doom. The same occured on the ground where Weenjen militia fought against the Klingon troops.

Eagerly Starfleet made the Weenjens and Paelians join the United Federation of Planets to set an example for the Klingon Empire with which the Federation was at war at that time. In early 2373 Paelia, Nera and the devastated Nemea as well as the Weenjen homeworld Ween Jen joined the Federation. The Klingons lost a source for ressources but didn't try to conquer the worlds. Precious food, some rare gases and other useful materials were not worth starting a second front so close to their own borders.

During the Dominion War some Paelians, mostly from Nemea, decided for a Starfleet carrear. They applied to become nurses, medical officers and other specialists who would not be directly involved into fighting. Many of them returned home after the war, traumatized for a lifetime after having to kill intelligent life. Very few got along with it and continued their carrears, though. Due to those staying, Paelians maintained to send candidates for Starfleet Academy.

<Dial_> if you had to name a third gender.. something new, original, how would you name <Dial_> it what pronoun would you introduce for it? <Alana_Larson> Hmm... <Dial_> hmm, maybe the idea is generally wrong <Dial_> I shouldn't use male and female <Dial_> for the other two <Alana_Larson> That is an interesting question <Dial_> yeah, I came up with a concept for the species of my char <Dial_> Dial won't stay Bolian <Dial_> this species has three genders <Dial_> if Gender A and Gender B sleep together, they produce Gender C <Dial_> if Gender B and C sleep together, they produce A <Dial_> and if A and C sleep together, they create B <Alana_Larson> Out of curiosity how will Dial change species? <Dial_> I'll simply change it in her bio <Alana_Larson> I suppose <Skyfire> hi, I'm back <Alana_Larson> Welcome back <Dial_> I played her not very Bolian before <Nugra> @Dial, I'd make sure to run it by your captain first. :D <Dial_> the way I played my Bolian char, will fit the new species <Dial_> I did so long ago <Dial_> in fact, he proposed it <Nugra> *nods* <Dial_> my concept of Bolians was claiming them to be Amphibians who moult their skin from time to time <Dial_> they could bloat their neck like frogs <Dial_> and many, many other odd ideas made others propose that I should create a species of my own <Dial_> instead of claiming those to be Bolian habits that were not seen in the show <Dial_> so, in fact I won't change Dial's species but rather simply change the species' name :D <Alana_Larson> http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/xe Pronoun for you <Dial_> sounds like a good idea <Dial_> it could work as a translation of the bolian word <Alana_Larson> And it's not to different from existing pronouns <Dial_> exactly <Dial_> that's why it is perfect <Dial_> so SF when they made contact with my "Bolianlike Speices that doesn't have a name yet" they named the three genders male, female and "something else I have to find a name for, too".. and the pronouns became he, she, xe <Dial_> sounds good <Alana_Larson> xemale? <Dial_> hmm, that is a good idea <Dial_> or maybe I'll find catchy terms for male and female, too... cause after all this gender system is absolutely not like male&female <Alana_Larson> True enough <Dial_> male and female, the words themselves, somehow imply two genders <Dial_> but I don't want to become as weird and confusing as the Andorians became when their gender systems was expanded in the novels <Dial_> they have 2 male nad 2 female genders <Dial_> with weird Andorian names <Alana_Larson> Yeah Andorian genders are confusing <Dial_> I want it to be simple, easy and yet original <Liam_Frost> nah, the andorian system is pretty simple <Dial_> yeah, it is indeed <Dial_> but their names aren't <Liam_Frost> true <Dial_> hemale, shemale, xemale <Dial_> it would imply that these are three different genders <Dial_> stressing that xemale is not something between male and female <Alana_Larson> yep <Dial_> gosh, inventing a species is hard <Dial_> especially when it even doesn't have a name yet <Alana_Larson> Any ideas for a name yet? <Dial_> no <Dial_> I'm using a alien species generator at the moment <Alana_Larson> Try using words from this page <Alana_Larson> Scroll down a bit <Liam_Frost> Zakarian <Liam_Frost> unless that's already taken <Dial_> [04:39:08] Instabula: I'll paste in here what I find useful [04:39:09] Instabula: Subeites [04:39:21] Instabula: Fumons [04:39:30] Instabula: Areiri [04:39:51] Instabula: Setanites <Dial_> I pasted it in the wrong chat window <Dial_> from what page? <Dial_> will you give me a link? <Alana_Larson> Oh forgot the link <Alana_Larson> http://www.lipsum.com/ <Alana_Larson> its the random text that microsoft word can generate to help with formatting <Dial_> sure, it's the right link? <Alana_Larson> yeah I'll copy some of the text for you <Alana_Larson> Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit ani <Dial_> ok, that's latin <Dial_> how does that help me find a name for my speices? <Skyfire> wait, what? <Alana_Larson> I've always been told it is simple dummy text <Dial_> it is a simply dummy text <Dial_> consisting of latin words <Alana_Larson> Ahh <Dial_> I can't tell if the text makes sense or not <Dial_> haven't read latin for 3 years now <Alana_Larson> I found translations of it <Dial_> yep. it's taken from cicero <Dial_> I guess, it was used as a dummy text because it contains almost all the characters of latin alphabet <Alana_Larson> probably <Alana_Larson> It makes pre-formatting stuff easier <Dial_> how so? <Dial_> Sophilians sounds nice <Dial_> somehow like a sophisticated species :D <Alana_Larson> We use it for setting up the layout off text boxes and what not as way of seeing more or less what it will look like before we get the actual content <Alana_Larson> It does sound nice <Dial_> ah, I see <Dial_> It's so hard choosing a name that ppl will ever call my char <Alana_Larson> I bet <Dial_> whenever they not use the name, they'll go like.. The Sophilian nurse does this and that <Liam_Frost> grr <Dial_> its like choosing a baby name <Liam_Frost> stupid firefox <Dial_> what did the fox do to you? <Liam_Frost> it's locked up on me <Dial_> how so? <Liam_Frost> I tried to check memory alpha for something and it's freaking out <Liam_Frost> not responding <Dial_> ah, that happens from time to time <Liam_Frost> sometimes <Liam_Frost> but usually only for a few seconds <Dial_> lol, they just proposed the species name "booblane" <Liam_Frost> it's ben several minutes now <Dial_> somehow this is getting weird <Liam_Frost> and my post is in one of those windows <Dial_> oh no <Dial_> why don't you type in a text editor? <Dial_> Paelians <Dial_> Borrans <Liam_Frost> force of habit <Liam_Frost> brb <Liam_Frost> gonna try something <Dial_> ok <Dial_> good luck <Liam_Frost> success! <Dial_> let's see. Subeites, Fumons, Areiri, Setanites, Paelians, Borrans or maybe Phaelians <Dial_> cool <Dial_> congratz <Dial_> hmm, I like Phaelians. but it would certainly pronounced like Fail-ians <Dial_> and somehow that's something I don't want <Alana_Larson> I like the Areiri <Dial_> me too <Dial_> I like all of these above <Dial_> except for Subeites <Dial_> that's no choice anymore <Dial_> adn Fumons is stupid, too <Dial_> but since I want to find the "Federation name" I want it not to sound too alien <Liam_Frost> Frellian <Liam_Frost> Garellites <Dial_> maybe, Paelians is good after all <Dial_> it sounds like something Humans could come up with <Alana_Larson> It almost (to me anyway) makes it sound like they have a lot of history with that name <Liam_Frost> brb <Liam_Frost> need a shower <Dial_> it sounds like an ancient name <Dial_> good luck <Dial_> I won't be around when you return <Dial_> so, good night <Dial_> so, the Paelians call themselves chupa (plural chupal) <Dial_> their homeworlds were named Nera, Naias and Nemea by the Federation <Alana_Larson> They evolved on multiple worlds? <Dial_> no, they colonized two class-m worlds <Alana_Larson> Okay <Dial_> even before developing warp-drive <Alana_Larson> Same star system then? <Dial_> no, but they had large ships with biospheres of their own <Dial_> and they had good luck <Alana_Larson> Okay thats a cool idea <Dial_> finding nearby two class-m woorlds <Dial_> yep <Dial_> and they made contact with another species at some point.. but Federation refused to make contact with them, cause they didn't have worp drive <Dial_> but many SF ppl found that stupid <Dial_> but SF command made them wait until the Paelians had convinced this species they had contact with to trade in their warp-technology <Alana_Larson> I thought warp drive was not necessarily the only condition, but if they were aware that they were not alone in the stars they could contact them as well <Alana_Larson> But maybe I'm just rusty with my trek knowledge <Dial_> hmm, I didn't know there was an exception of the rule <Dial_> might be, might not be <Dial_> it would be reasonable to have this exceptio <Alana_Larson> I seem to remember something about that but I don't know if it was canon or not <Dial_> even if it was in a book or on a website, it's ok <Alana_Larson> Hmmm... an excuse to read my star trek books again (like I needed one lol) <Dial_> hehe :D <Dial_> I'm readin worlds of ds9 atm <Alana_Larson> I'm reading Gary Linderer's books about his experiences in the Vietnam war <Alana_Larson> Unfortunatley it doesnt help answer the question about the prime directive <Alana_Larson> http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Prime_Directive#Exceptions <Dial_> Pre-warp civilization was a term used by the Federation to define any society that had not yet discovered and utilized faster-than-light space travel like the warp drive. Pre-warp cultures could range in technology level from extremely primitive to that of Earth in the mid-21st century. (Star Trek Into Darkness; Star Trek: First Contact) The Prime Directive of the Federation interdicted any disturbance of such civilizations, including any form of contact, until a culture had independently proven its warp-capability. Otherwise, any involvement in the development of pre-warp societies could result in the contamination of their culture, thereby altering their natural evolution. Usually pre-warp civilizations were limited to their homeworld. However, their technical abilities could be sophisticated enough to expand throughout their star system. (ENT: "Dear Doctor"; Star Trek: Insurrection) The Federation did allow limited covert research to be conducted on pre-warp civilizations, usually by means of a duck blind. (TNG: "Who Watches The Watchers") Observers could also be placed amongst a civilization as a prelude to first contact. (TNG: "First Contact") <Dial_> oops, should have put in the link <Dial_> http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Pre-warp_civilization <Liam_Frost> and we're back <Alana_Larson> Welcome back <Dial_> wb <Dial_> didn't expcect ot be around when you're bac <Dial_> well, s0me of hte expections are useful <Dial_> like this: The society hails or attacks a Federation vessel <Dial_> The society is in diplomatic discussions with the Federation ( <Dial_> YEAH <Alana_Larson> or federation citizens interfered with the culture as the prime directive does not apply to them <Dial_> there is THE ONE exception <Dial_> The society was previously interfered with by non-Federation citizens (e.g., Klingons) in a manner that would have violated the Prime Directive had it been done by Starfleet personnel <Dial_> thanks for handing over the link <Alana_Larson> Glad to help
