History

For the most part the Vanoben have had a peaceful history. They have no recorded internal conflicts and developed in a slow, natural progression until they finally discovered space travel. Once they had it was not that long before their curiosity had them exploring the universe around them.

They quickly founded a couple colonies which have flourished and it was shortly after this that they encountered their first hostile species. As a result they quickly had to upgrade a number of ships for battle. Fortunately for them they were able to defeat the enemy and further research lead to the development of their first true warships. It was during this war that outsiders were first exposed to their custom of taking a vow of vengeance against their enemies. Many believe it was this mental condition called KaA’Van more than anything else that resulted in their winning the war.

Prior to 2379, several Vanoben had settled on Tiburon, sometime after the Suliban. The Tiburons themselves did not mix with the Vanoben settlers, however there were no recorded disputes between them either.

In 2369, a Vanoben transport was raided near Deep Space 9 and the Vanoben had several valuable items taken from them. It was believed the Miradorn privateers Ah-Kel and Ro-Kel were responsible.

Government

They have had a central government for so long that no reference can be found in their historical data files of any other system ever being used on their world. What makes there government so unusual is that it seems according to their records to have existed in the exact same form since it was originally adopted by them.

They have a central council of 5 who serve for life. When one of them dies his replacement is selected by the remaining members of the council.

Description

They are a reptilian humanoid species with pronounced ridges over the eyes and thick leathery skin. Their skin is multi-coloured with the predominate shades of green, yellow, tan and cream blending together over their faces and bodies to produce distinct markings.

Physiology

They have a tough thick skin that is fairly resistant to heat and to a lesser degree cold. It is also hard to cut and due to it’s thickness makes it hard for them to feel anything against their skin. They are also fairly resistant to most types of mild toxins and poisons.

On average they live to about 150 years old and they mate about once every 10 years starting at the age of 20. It takes about 10 years for the children to grow and develop to the point where they can exist on their own. On average a female will lay between 5 and 25 eggs which take about 6 months to hatch.

Psychology

They have no recorded mental diseases or other mental issues. They tend to be very stable with no extremes of conduct or emotional outbreaks. At this time it is unknown why this is.

Religion

While it does not seem so they have a very strong religious belief in the divine deity they know as Ja’Zin. Every adult will visit the ancient temple of Ja’Zin at least once and in most cases a few times in their lives. This huge facility is in the center of a large swamp and covers over 5 square kilometres of ground.

Mythology

They have a large collection of myths regarding a never ending war between Ja’Zin and another being they call Ahk’Tar. One of the underlying aspects of these myths is that Ja’Zin has protected them repeatedly from being attacked by the followers of Ahk’Tar.

Society

For the most part they have a peaceful society, very little crime and a universal system to ensure that they all have the necessities of life. They tend to work together as a people, co-operating to achieve any goal or overcome any hardship. They are tolerant of other species and cultures but also do not go out of their way to mix and mingle being more comfortable around others of their own species.

Culture

Music and sculptures seem to be the predominant forms of artistic expression. They do not tend to be moved by colours but by shapes and sound.

Customs

They have an interesting custom called KaA’Van. This involves them taking an oath of vengeance against anyone who has wronged them. This oath results in a single minded, unstoppable drive that does not relent until the subject of the vow has been eliminated. Many believe that it is this custom that is behind their long history of peaceful co-existence as none of them wish to be the subject on the receiving end of such a vow.

Technology

They are not as advanced as the Federation but do not seem to concerned with this. Many of the advanced technologies they have encountered belonging to Federation worlds do not interest them in the least.

Economy

For the most part they are fairly self sufficient. Trade between the home world and their colonies is very brisk and they do have a number of long time trade deals with various species.

Military

They have a small military, made up primarily of heavy destroyers and heavy cruisers. These are used to protect not only their home world but the few colonies they have established in near by systems. While not suited to a large war these vessels are more than capable of holding their own in any encounter with hostile forces of the same size.
