History

Though the Vraskian Empire spanned nearly 10,000 years, the decline began relatively early, and the Empire merely malingered on after the tipping point. (Note: VE marks the beginning of timekeeping from the moment of faster-than-light travel.)

0-289 VE During this time, a mass exodus from Vrask occurred with the advent of inexpensive, faster than light space travel. Most were explorers, but a few had other ideas.

289-1547 VE During this period, Vraskian ambassadors greet other intelligent life in the vicinity and offer treaties and trade agreements. They offer protection and use of their technology to “underdeveloped” worlds in return for fealty, and though most of these inhabitants do not live long enough to actually benefit much by Vraskian space travel, the other technologies—science, medical, and computer—planted the seeds for rebellion early on in the life of the Empire.

1549 VE Called “The Year of the Nova” a marked change occurred in Vraskian policy as Drint Noorinn, one of the largest proponents for peaceful expansion, was imprisoned for a litany of crimes. He disappeared after imprisonment, and most believed him dead.

2123 VE Shortly after Drint Noorinn’s death, Vraskian military ships under the command of Varist Isna, one of the many who’d opposed Drint Noorinn, invaded several worlds primarily for power, greed, and resources. Each world invaded save four housed preindustrial civilizations. On those worlds, the Vrask were greeted as gods. On a few, the population rose up and struggled to combat the invaders, but none of the worlds targeted possessed equivalent or superior technology. World after world, they conquered.

2981 VE After nearly 3,000 years of faster than light travel, the Vraskian acquisition of twenty inhabited star systems caused an event termed The Great Rift, which occurred between two major segments of the race. Nearly half of the race, some 15 billion individuals, decided to gut the Empire and leave the conquerors and despots to their spoils. An armada of battleships surrounded the Vrask home world to keep anyone from leaving. Those imprisoned on the planet mainly consisted of Drint Noorinn’s supporters, and they banded together and blasted a way out. The Vraskian home world was made uninhabitable, killing at least 1 billion Vraskian.

No Vrask who stayed in the Empire knew where the others of his race had gone. They simply commandeered as many ships as possible, gathered supplies, and left the sector. This marked the beginning of the Empire’s decline.

6089 VE After two generations of ruling their conquered territory, the first wave of rebellion began. Two worlds on the edge of the empire declared independence, and the Vraskian Empire lost Miloveau and Farna, worlds who’d managed to reverse engineer Vraskian technology and improve upon for the express purposes of protection and independence from their long-lived overlords.

7984 VE As the Dominion took control of the Gamma Quadrant, the Vrask were already reaching the end of their decline. Before the Dominion reached the periphery, an inundation of refugees from more inner portions of the galaxy created an extremely unstable environment. Most of the refugees were Ny Vost, a race whose members followed a strict code of religious orthodox formality and tradition. They fled to the outer reaches of the Quadrant to escape Dominion influence, and the Ny Vost’s arrival also brought new technology, which the Vraskian tried to suppress. Ny Vost technological and social influence would soon spell the death knell for the Empire, not because of orthodoxy, but because the Ny Vost saw an opportunity.

8052 VE One Ny Vost leader, Vehmon, was the ultimate fire-starter for the larger population subjugated by the Vraskian. Vehmon sided with political activists calling for change, and their support grew as they preached the ousting of the Vraskian regime. Each world rose up, capturing and imprisoning any Vraskian they could discover. Most of those captured ended up being executed by the Ny Vost for various crimes. Many Vraskian fled for their lives. Most didn’t make it away from their persecutors in time. Among those who escaped, Levan Norsce was one of the few powerful politicians to be in transit when the Ny Vost began seizing Vraskian, and he nearly didn’t escape Ny Vost sweeps.

9054 VE By this time, few full-blooded Vraskians lived in the place once known as their empire. None who escaped could remember standing upon the surface of their home world, and many of the uprooted Vraskian refugees abandoned politics and became purely invested in travel. The Hunger gripped them all, and they scattered to the stars. Small groups remained together, but most of the older members of the race had seen so much that they severed contact with their own species to avoid the sheer weight of memory.

9517 VE The Dominion seized the region, and the Ny Vost capitulated quickly. The empire dies. (Note: This occurs roughly 1300 years into the Dominion’s expansion, about 800 years before first contact occurred between the Dominion and the Federation.)

Government

The Vraskian once hailed from Vrask, a planet located on the periphery of the Gamma Quadrant. Several thousand years ago, their Empire consisted of nearly twenty star systems, but the Empire deteriorated quickly as the Vraskian were faced with ruling more conquered territory than they could effectively protect or govern.

The influx of refugees from the expanding Dominion resulted in eventual rebellion and mass executions. All semblance of Vraskian government were wiped out.

Now they are the refugees, scattered across space. Very few pure bloods remain. Over 98% of their remaining population are hybrids and no where is there any colony larger than a few thousand.

As a result the few groups that still govern themselves have adopted so many different styles of government that it is impossible to say that they have any real form of government left to them.

Description

Vraskian always use their first and last names. They can acquire as many as 15 names throughout their lives, but the first and last are given at birth. All other names are claimed by the individual or given to them as a result of some event or occurrence they were a part of.

While few pure bloods remain most hybrids tend to have these Vraskian characteristics. For the most part they are humanoid. In very rare cases you may find hybrids that are not but for the most part they tend to procreate only with other humanoids species. Usually they will have paler skin than normal for their species, blue irises in slightly tilted eyes that are larger than normal for that species and dark red, auburn, or brown hair.

Most species find the gaze of a Vraskian extremely uncomfortable for long periods of time. This is partly due to the unusually enlarged eyes that most of them have but also because they don’t blink often.

Physiology

Like most intelligent life forms they have a complex system with unique chemicals, hormones and enzymes. A highly adaptive set of complex internal organs has allowed them to survive in many climates and numerous unusual conditions including prolonged space travel with no noticeable health problems.

Longevity

The main issue causing the decline began occurring when the Vraskian bloodlines began to become depleted as they intermingled with inhabitants of non-Vraskian worlds.

All full-blooded Vraskian carry a gene that extends their lives. They live an equivalent of 1500-2500 human years; of course, some have been fabled to live longer. This gene is often passed on to their children. However, the gene is recessive in most non-Vraskian species. After they’ve turned 1000, their hair usually turns white, and they begin developing fine wrinkles

Psychology

After breaking the time barrier and developing Warp capabilities roughly 10,000 years in the past, they became a species forever in the stars. Most Vraskian develop a deep seated wanderlust, what they called The Hunger, at a very young age. Many a young Vrask has left his kind to strike out for the unknown. The race became ever more scattered because of this longing.

Religion

Over time as they mingled and bred with other species they slowly lost any semblance of their own religious beliefs and adopted those of the species they lived among.

Mythology

Over time as they mingled and bred with other species they slowly lost any records or knowledge of any mythology that they might have once had and adopted those of the species they lived among.

Society

Vraskian refer to one single member of their species as a “Vrask.” This term stems from the belief that each distinct member of their species carries a “race consciousness” with him or herself. This consciousness supposedly exists as an inner, cellular knowledge of all who have come before the individual. This “knowing” inner sense is largely dismissed by any Vraskian alive, though some still accept the pre-warp mystics’ claims to have experienced the race consciousness during deep meditation after fasting for several decades.

Culture

The Vraskian developed extremely intricate instruments that required many hundreds of years to truly master, and symphonies were truly spectacular. Since the decline of their species and the greatly reduced life spans of hybrids in general only the recordings of this music remains. Very few individuals remain who could be called masters of this vanishing art.

Customs

Vraskian are relaxed among other travelers, no matter their race. Vraskian are most uncomfortable when their feet touch the surface of a planet because they believe, at that moment, that they are bound to the planet until The Hunger calls them back to the stars. This tendency to leave caused great trouble as numbers of full-blooded Vraskians depleted over the centuries, and the gene that prolonged their lives became ever more recessive as their race intermingled with others.

Though Vraskians enjoy travel and long for it, many discovered shortly after developing warp travel that they preferred power. Thus began an era of invasion and conquering that would lead to The Great Rift and the evacuation of nearly one half of the entire Vraskian race.

Ceremony of Names

During his lifetime, a Vrask will accrue names. Some names are given by others and accepted. Each Naming is deeply meaningful to the one accepting/claiming the name. Each of the 13 accrued names has a specific ceremony. The first and last names are given with no ceremony at birth.

Technology

The Vraskian are extremely long-lived, and their technology to travel between the stars was reliant on their long life spans. They never developed anything more efficient than Warp 1 because such technology was unnecessary for the ruling class. Indeed, toward the end of the Empire, the ruling class of Vraskian actually participated in much technology suppression to keep the Empire whole.

Since the extinction of their Empire and the scattering of their species across the far reaches of space they have adopted and use many different levels and types of technology. Usually that which is available to them or that belongs to the species they have the most contact with.

Economy

Now that they are scattered across the far reaches of space they have no true economic self identity. Each group, colony or individual trades, buys and sells as required for themselves and their people.

Military

No Vraskian war ship of any kind has been seen in over 500 years. All of them were destroyed by the Dominion.

Some of the larger colonies do have small defensive forces but for the most part each individual is responsible for their own safety.

Federation Intelligence Files

This species is considered to be mostly nomadic with very few permanent colonies. They have no distinct society, culture or identity as a people.
