Background
Leenaya (Lee for short) is the daughter of Elara and Maron Edrei. Her mother, as a Starfleet diplomatic officer, often moved to different planets. Leenaya thus mostly grew up on Betazed with her brother and her dad, a civilian doctor whom she got her passion of medicine from. Leenaya developed a close bond with her father, learning basic medicine skills from him. Her relationship with her mother was more distant, as Elara’s duties frequently kept her away.
When she was a teenager, Elara was stationed on Earth. They thus moved to San Francisco to join her. That was a significant change for Leenaya, coinciding with the development of her telepathic abilities, as well as Rylan’s departure for Starfleet Academy. It was all the ore difficult as she had a very close relationship with her brother.
On Earth, she started to explore her telepathy. She discovered that, unlike on Betazed where honesty is valued and thoughts are transparent, humans have a very different way of interacting, often hiding their real intentions. It pushed her to hide her own thoughts and even lie, which is an ability she found necessary in order to navigate her new social environment.
A few years later, more inspired by her brother than her mother, Leenaya joined Starfleet Medical Academy and followed her father's footsteps to become a physician. At first, she’d intended to be a civilian doctor but ultimately decided against it: seeing her brother discovering the galaxy made her realise this was something she wanted for herself. Additionally, the idea of working in the same organization as Rylan was appealing to her, and she viewed a career in Starfleet as a new opportunity to connect with him.
Being of two cultures, even if it procured enrichment to her, made her feel like she didn’t have a “real” home. The fact both her cultures may be opposed to each other can be the source of moral dilemmas for her. As such, she enjoys the company of other Betazoids, as it helps her reconcile the values of honesty advocated by her native culture with the realities of her current environment.
