About the Writer

Kris has been writing fiction for fun since the age of 4. In high school, Kris had an op-ed column in a local publication, and has been featured in a university anthology collection. They have a degree in History, but now work in IT as a QA Engineer.

The first Star Trek episode Kris ever saw was The Trouble With Tribbles (TOS S02E15). That began a life-long love of all things Trek.

awarded to individuals who bring their ships to life with well-rounded PNPCs, enhancing plots and character development, without detracting from the main story and characters of the sim. They add depth and colour to the universe, and make the journey the experience. Named for Jeffrey Combs, guest star of a thousand faces.

In addition to writing for Jones, Kris has several PNPC characters in his arsenal and has written for MSPNPC characters that jump to the task no matter what role they’re intended to fill. Additionally, Kris also wrote a brief stint on Ops, for which his contributions there were also recognized: “Hiro was one of several guest simmers who has graciously come to participate in a mission on Ops. He did with gusto and I was impressed with the NPCs that he provided for the mission. I really enjoyed the different personalities that shined through and the way he helped establish and then progress the story. His descriptions helped visualise the scene and his narration allowed us a peek into each character's psyche that was engaging and never boring. It is for this reason I believe he deserves this award.”

named after one of the races developed here at 118, extensively by our players and for our players. It is presented to a player who embodies that ongoing creativity in their exploration of new life forms. While we often find ourselves and our missions involving new races, it is the recipient of this award who has brought those races to life in a realistic manner, enriching the story and cementing said races’ place in 118 history.

“Kris has demonstrated unmatched creativity and dedication in the development and expansion of the Da’al species, one which exists solely within the canon of SB118. Through Kris’ simming as an MSPNPC, they painted a picture of not just their physical and psychological makeup, but their cultural and social systems as well. Kris displayed initial enthusiasm for fleshing out the details of the Da’al species during the prep phase of the mission. The Da’al had played a major role in a previous mission, but they’d not been revisited in the two years since. Kris took the handful of sociocultural breadcrumbs from that old mission and immediately created a compelling character, steeped in the lore of the Da’al, but with new and fresh takes on their society. Kris’ standout moment in the development of the Da’al came part way through the mission, when they simmed an action that could be described as uncharacteristic of the species. In keeping with the collaborative spirit of our game, Kris accepted the note in stride. They pivoted IC, and in doing so, created new opportunities for everyone to direct the plot and the Da’al in new and satisfying ways.”

The Order of Starfleet Merit and Achievement (TOSMA) is awarded to a member who shows great dedication in their behavior and simming abilities. “Kris, the player behind Ensign Hiro Jones, re-joined SB118 only last November, but they have become one of if not the most active person on our ship. They involve everyone, junior and senior, to their scenes, and they also make joint posts often and with practically everyone. They are the mind behind scenes from lower decks movie night to holodeck DnD and multipart crossposts on childhood friendship. To my knowledge, they have formed friendships with everyone onboard the Artemis and even on other ships. Not only are they typically one of if not the most active posters on Artemis, but they also play an MSPNPC on Ops. They recently said playing two roles (and given their amazing playing with PNPCs and MSPNPCs on Artemis, more than two roles) on two different ships has been demanding, but they have shown no signs of exhaustion. Instead, they don’t seem to shy from taking more responsibilities and has always performed them with dedication. During our previous mission, they were eager to take an MSPNPC to play with, and the mission before that, they played with Hiro and, in addition, as big a role as PNPC Kawarda so I wouldn’t be left alone in my scene. They also wrote an article to the Medical Journal on Da’allium, a chemical we discovered during the previous mission. The article is amazing, detailed and filled with figures and images. If writing a thesis on a fictional chemical (that they mostly invented and formulated too!) doesn’t speak of dedication, I don’t know what does!”

Awards General Neelix 2011.jpg
Neelix Award 239606.24
Oddas Aria and Randal Shayne
For extra, out-of-character simming devotion. This includes, but isn't limited to, helping fellow officers who are in need of simming aid, visibility on the forums, OOC list presence, upkeep of wiki pages, etc.

((OOC Award Presentation 239606.24))

Nicholas: The Neelix Award is given to those players who go out of their way to improve the ship and community, either through the use of the forums, the Discord channel or by helping with the upkeep of all the little things that improve our enjoyment of the game. This year, for her work with all the graphic things on the Eagle, and her general presence on the OOC channels - ensuring the Eagle has a strong and positive presence, we present Kayla Drex with the Neelix Award.

Quinn: Absolutely well earned, Kris. You’ve proven your unwavering dedication to the group, and have supported the Eagle in so many ways in these past months. This is most earned, and I want to personally thank you for your willingness to step forward, offer assistance, and make the most of your skills and talents.

Awards General SilverPalm 2011.jpg
Silver Palm 239606.24
Oddas Aria and Randal Shayne
Awarded to a simmer who has consistently boosted the morale of his/her crew. The recipient will be known to be able to add that spark to a plot whenever it may be lagging, or may be able to consistently bring enjoyment or a bit of humour to the sim, whilst keeping such sims relevant and realistic.

((OOC Award Presentation 239606.24))

Nicholas: One simmer has been recognized as having introducing a bit of humor, fun, and humanity to their sims - with quiet praise being given in private and in public. This type of work is right in line with the Silver Palm’s description and reason for being, and so it is only natural to award it to Kayla Drex.

Quinn: The eagle might be our sigil and mascot, but Kris is undoubtedly our most accomplished cheerleader. She has lead by example from the moment she arrived, and has raised spirits left and right, freely giving her strength, compassion and wicked sense of humor to elate us in times of challenge or distress. I know that she has tirelessly done this across the fleet as well. Thank you for your efforts, lieutenant! Very well deserved indeed.

Awards DutyPost CochraneAward 2011.jpg
Cochrane Award 239606.24
Oddas Aria
The Cochrane Award is a duty post award and is awarded to those science officers who have contributed greatly to the advance of science in the midst of their Starfleet career, by staying knowledgeable about their field, participating in the community of science, but most importantly, by placing their knowledge at the service of their ship and its mission.

((OOC Duty Post Award Presentation 239606.30))

Presented by Oddas Aria: “Kayla Drex epitomizes the Science Officer role. During missions she easily interweaves the mind of a curious scientist throughout the narrative, offering suggestions and information appropriate for her position.

Both IC and OOC Drex continually impresses, providing details and thoughts to improve writing, and realism in the science aspects of both the Ship and the Fleet. Participating in cross-fleet activities, such as SIMSCON and the SJAS, she gladly imparts her knowledge, time, and talent to the fleet as a whole, and we are lucky to have her.

For all of these reasons I am very pleased to be able to present Kayla Drex with the Cochrane Award.”
