History

The early history of the Xindi is a remarkable one. It is very rare for 2 intelligent species to evolve on the same planet. For 6 species to have done so is unheard of. As a result many historians, scientists and experts agree that the loss of their home world was a enormous blow to science and the understanding of just how this unique situation came to be.

Regardless we do know that the Aquatics were the first to evolve into an intelligent life form and that the were followed by the Primates. It is widely believed that the Avians were the last species to evolve into an intelligent life form. Very little is known about their ancient history but it is known that the Primates became the dominante life form and ruled over all the others for eons. Numerous minor conflicts were fought over the years but finally the last war escalated and they destroyed their own planet in the mid 2030's.

It was believed that the Avians were all destroyed at this time. This was due to a number of reasons. The most obvious of which was that they were so far behind the other Xindi species when it came to technology and they did not have the ships or capability to build any.

Gralik Durr's grandfather, who had resided on Xindus, remembered a time before the planet's destruction when Avians would flock overhead, filling the sky.

Strangely, the remains of an Avian settlement were found on an alien planet that dated back to the 2nd millennium BC. The ruins of the settlement were used for the meeting place of the Xindi Council after their home world was destroyed. It was here that they planned and ordered the development, construction and deployment of the prototype weapon that they then dispatched to attack Earth. This attack was successful and millions of humans were killed.

In reality the Avians were not destroyed. They did not use space craft to evacuate their population. No they used an ancient device they had discovered hidden in a cave deep with in the almost inaccessible Gri’Ahh Mountain range. Over half of their population lived in these mountains and they believed that the device was a gift from Tweeaatt.

They used it to establish a few colonies on other worlds long before any of the other Xindi species discovered the technology that allowed space travel. Most of these colonies were short lived as they quickly grew home sick and eventually returned to their home world. One such became the location for the Xindi Council after the destruction of their home world.

When it became evident that the escalating conflict between the other Xindi species would endanger them as well they reopened the portal and selected the best possible planet based on their knowledge gained from previous visits.

They funnelled as many of their people through the portal before their planet was destroyed as they could. In this way they saved just over half of their people. Most of them had expected to be able to return to their home world after the fighting had ended. They waited and waited for the portal to be opened again. It never was.

They suspected that the fighting might have damaged the portal device. It was only after they made contact many years later with other surviving Xindi that they learned the truth. They spent a year in mourning for their homeworld and many of their people expired from the grief generated by the enormity of their loss.

It took time but they adjusted to the new truth. Then a large number of them wanted to isolate them selves from all other species, especially the other 5 Xindi species. It took the other Xindi species all most 75 years to convince them that they should not cut themselves off from the universe.

Since then they have been withdrawn, all most isolationists, with the greatest percentage of their people never setting foot off their new homeworld. Unlike the other Xindi species they did not scatter across the universe in multiple colonies. For the most part they prefer to remain alone with themselves.

Government

Prior to the destruction of their homeworld the Xindi were ruled for eons by the Primates. It was only after they lost their home world that they were able to finally form a joint council with 2 members from each of the 5 species having a voice and a vote. This system worked well until they discovered that the Avians had not been wiped out as believed. It took almost 75 years but finally the Avians were convinced to accept a spot on the council and each species now has 3 representatives.

As for the Avians they still retain the same system that they have used since the beginning of their recorded history. The 9 oldest Avians automatically form the council with the oldest member taking the position of speaker.

Description

Xindi-Avians are members of the multi-species Xindi race. They are the most peaceful of the six species, which shared a common genetic ancestry. In fact they are pacifists and deeply religious. In appearance, Avians appear to be humanoid birds. They are completely covered in feathers and have the ability to fly. When not in use their wings are folded against their backs. When fully extended a normal male will in average have a wing span of 10 to 12 feet.

They tend to be between 4’8” and 5”6” and are very slim yet physically healthy. They normally weigh less than 80 lbs. For the most part they seldom wear any clothes. When they do it is usually a pale coloured robe that leaves one shoulder exposed and ends at the knees.

Physiology

The Xindi-Avians lay eggs, normally 2 to 6 at a time. These eggs take about 6 months to hatch. Unlike their parents their bones are solid. As they grow they slowly become hollow. By the time they are fully grown this process has been completed.

Normally they can fly after about 6 months and tend to spend at least a few hours everyday of their lives flying. It has been noted that if an avian becomes injured or too old to fly that they usually die within a few short weeks. At this time there is no conclusive proof for why this happens. Other than this they are fairly typical humanoids with complex specialized internal organs.

Psychology

Avians are extremely peaceful and abhor any and all forms of violence. They also tend to be very spiritual. They prefer to remain uninvolved in the disputes between the other 5 Xindi species and have gone to great lengths in order to avoid certain issues.

Religion

Numerous experts from a wide range of species have been confused by the Xindi religion for many years. The number of unusual contradictions and seeming inconsistencies have left them puzzled and perplexed. First of all is the fact that each species have their own name for their god. Next is the fact that each species perceives that god to be a reflection of their own best qualities. Each species portrays their god as being similar in appearance to them.

What has confused the experts is that all 6 species agree that they all pray to the same god. Furthermore they have never had any hostile disagreements over the many differences between how each species honours their god. They all accept those differences. In fact it is not unusual for Xindi of different species to all use the same temple even if the beliefs, images and ceremonies are nothing like those found in their own temples.

Skwaaauuuuukk

The Avians are easily the most religious of the 6 Xindi species. They call their version of their god Skwaaauuuuukk. He is normally portrayed on tapestries as a winged figure basked in a golden glow of light that prevents any one from seeing the fine details regarding his appearance. Other than that he looks to be a normal avian male although one that is bigger than any others portrayed on the tapestry.

The avians do not build temples but gather at dawn and at sunset to flock into the sky and sing songs to his glory as they fly in slow majestic patterns. The sun is considered to be the home and resting place of Skwaaauuuuukk. From here he watches and observes the actions of his people.

Mythology

The Avians have lost none of their history or the tales of the olden times. All of them were saved as part of the living memory within their elders. Almost all of them are songs, committed to memory and passed on from one generation to the next.

Society

They have an idyllic society with peaceful, hard working citizens going about their business. Family and the community are important and but even more so is religion. Individuals will help out others who need it. Crime is almost unheard of unless it is committed by one of the other Xindi species.

Culture

While the Avians do enjoy music they tend to use very few instruments and to rely more so on the power of the voice to create the melodies. These songs can sometimes blend together as many as a thousand voices to achieve the perfect tones needed to not only convey the harmony but the emotions as well.

The only other art form they embrace is the creation of amazing tapestries. Some of them are so intricate as to be virtually as realistic as a digital image.

Customs

Every adult Avian is expected to have learned and be able to sing the entire history of their people, his clan and family. In many cases these songs can take up to 4 and a half days of non-stop singing before they can be completed.

In some ways they are almost like an endurance contest. One that has to be passed prior to the individual becoming an adult.

Technology

The Avians are easily the least advanced of the 6 Xindi species. In fact they were believed to have been wiped out when their home world was destroyed as they did not have the technology or the tech skills to build and operate space craft.

As it turns out this is not what happened to them. However they are still considered almost primitive by the other Xindi species. They have very little interest in most technology and would prefer to spend their time in meditation.

Economy

The Avians have the least interest in any trade and do not waste time producing vast amounts of trade goods. That does not mean that they do not conduct some trade but it is a very irregular thing and they have no long standing trade deals with anyone, not even the other Xindi species.

Military

Avians are generally pacifists. They abhor any type of violence and will never engage in any aggressive acts. As a result they not only do not have any warships but they also have never had any military or even any police force.

Federation Intelligence Files

The Xindi (pronounced ZIN-dee) were an alliance of species who evolved on the same planet in the Delphic Expanse, known as Xindus, whose infamous attack on Earth and attempts to terminate Humans in the early 2150s changed the course of history and initiated the series of events that helped establish United Earth as a major interstellar power.

In the mirror universe, Xindi ships fought in a conflict with the Terran Empire sometime prior to 2155. In the 26th century of an alternate timeline, Xindi served on the USS Enterprise-J during the Battle of Procyon V against the Sphere Builders.

Commander Dolim, a Xindi-Reptilian once commented that the Council chamber had "the stench of the Avians' failure to survive".
