History
A race of hardy space pioneers, the Bardeezans are traders, pilots, couriers and even smugglers. Their squat appearance, tanned complexion and hearty manner make them great drinking companions and trusted friends - so long as you don't cross them in business.
The Bardeezans have had an industrial society, all be it low scale, for several centuries. A fairly peaceful race, records of wars on their home planet between tribes are sparse. For a long time now, Bardeez has been ruled as one state.
The most significant event in the recent history of the Bardeezans is their involvement, unwittingly, in the Pythro-Byzallian War.
The pretext for the war had its origins in border disputes between the Bardeezans their neighbours the Byzallians in the Vectis System. For years the Byzallians had been taking many Bardeezans as ‘Hotch’ (slave) labour. In time, the hard pressed Bardeezans turned to their powerful allies the Pythrons for support.
The Pythrons sent an Army of Observation to Bardeez to bolster the planets defences. An ultimatum was also sent to Byzatium, hoping to give them one final warning to stop ravaging the Bardeez population. When the Byzallian Government professed no knowledge of their slave trade, the Pythrons were unimpressed. In 2388, the Pythron President J’Eyga ordered his Army of Observation to go on the offensive, and become an Army of Execution and invade Byzatium itself under the command of Marshal Karinus LeNoir.
Government
The Bardeezans are a democracy, underpinned by universal adult suffrage and secret ballot. They elect a President (Chief) and a Cabinet of Advisors to govern the planet and control the military. The current Chief is Landinam Losifar, a former member of Star Fleet.
Physiology
Bardeezans are short, stocky and tanned. Males often have facial hair, and is often braided and combed. Females are shorter and of course, beardless, but no less stocky. They possess great strength for their size and can endure harsh climates for extended periods. They are also very long lived, not reaching maturity until their 50s, and living to about 200 years, baring accidents.
Psychology
Bardeezans have no psychic or empathic abilities, but being warm and welcoming in nature often put others at ease without recall to mind tricks.
Religion
Unlike a lot of modern planet societies, the Bardeezans are still fairly religious. Their deity is an omnipresent creator that permeates all reality. Given the name ‘Landi’ (or number one in their language), every else stems from them. Devotion to Landi mostly consists of thanks giving festivals held throughout the year, involving much feasting and celebrations.
Mythology
Bardeezans are quite superstitious and believe that many elemental spirits live on in the landscape of their homely planet. Although their science has consistently failed to prove the existence of any of these supernatural entities, or even of the god Landi itself, they nevertheless are happy to feel a spiritual connection to their land.
Society
Bardeezan society is family centered and local clans and communities live happily together, often feasting in large village squares (see below). Respect for senior family members is strong, and children’s names are often a literal combination of their parents’ nomenclatures.
Culture
Bardeezan culture is very heavily focused on oral tradition, with songs and storytelling still very popular despite advances in modern media. Young Bardeezans are far more likely to be found sitting around a camp fire listening to an elder telling them about adventures of the past than have them being glued in front of a view screen. The use of primitive holodecks have, however, grown in popularity so they can relive the sagas of old.
A quirk of their culture is that everyone and place on Bardeez is numbered, so all proper nouns are a phonetic pronounciation of the first nine numbers. For example, Landinam Losifar is 1-5-6-4.
1 – Landi
2 – Hug
3 – Onih
4 – Ifar
5 – Nam
6 – Los
7 – Fair
8 – Gogi
9 – Gobo
Customs
Bardeezans are open and friendly, and treat others how they would like to be treated. This can sometimes leave them open to being taken advantage of, and they have over recent times become somewhat more suspicious of others species intents. The best way to befriend a Bardeezan is be honest and friendly, and buy them a drink.
Technology
Bardeezans are space-faring with warp technology, and maintain a modern level of technology. They are primarily couriers and pilots, and contact with other races has helped them procure the latest upgrades and developments.
Economy
As mentioned above, the economy of Bardeez is trade based, and the Bardeezans are sought after as reliable trusted couriers. Fees paid to Bardeezan pilots are funneled back into the planet’s economy, and allows them the ability to finance off-world purchases. The domestic economy of Bardeez is actually agricultural, but this is increasingly under threat as the level of manpower is dwindling due to the growing number of Bardeezans being abducted by their planetary foes – the Byzallians, (see below).
Military
The Bardeezans do maintain their own defence forces, although few in number and mostly limited to low level attacks. They have, however, been forced to fight their neighbours the [Byzatium|Byzallians] who have often raided and carried away many Bardeezans as ‘hotch’ or slaves. Unable to ward off the raids of the Byzallians, the Bardeezans turned to their allies and trading partners, the Pythrons for military assistance. This led to the Mutos War.
Federation Intelligence Files
NB: Bardeezan merchant ships have traversed the Bajoran wormhole into the Gamma Quadrant. One such ship left Deep Space Nine the night Dukat was kidnapped by the Maquis. As one of only two to do so, suspicion quickly shifted to the other ship, a Galdador freighter.
