The artificial intelligence labs aboard SB118 are host to a variety of research and development projects. Furthermore, they also provide the bedrock for the prototype deployment phase for much of the Federation computer technology in this region. That is, they run prototype software and hardware as systems for use in semi-mission critical roles allowing for testing in more realistic scenarios. Backup subsystems are provided of course should failures occur.
