'''HUTTON:''' At ease.  I want to wish you all a warm welcome to the STEADFAST. Less than a year ago, this ship was de-commissioned.  Since that time, I am the only officer to return to her deck from that same day.  She has a brand new crew…a brand new family.  A very young family at that.  Some of you have served on other Starfleet vessels and installations.  Some of you are fresh out of the Academy.
The Steadfast-A has been ordered to proceed to an outer and relatively empty sector of space to engage in standard skills training exercises of her young crew. While most of the crew preps her respective stations and systems, several of the ensigns work on designing some rudimentary decoys for tactical practice.
 
But Starfleet has assigned all of you to this vessel in an effort to improve the skills that they have already trained you in. Now this does not mean that you are under some sort of review or scrutiny into your professional skills. If that were the case, you would not be walking on my deck. On the contrary, Starfleet sees something in each of you…and that’s potential. You are here on the STEADFAST to explore that potential and show Starfleet what you’re made of.
 
I suggest you make use of this opportunity.  I need each and every one of you to show me why you’re some of the best and brightest in Starfleet. We need you to show that to each other.
