(Obsidian is considered the best material for surgery on symbionts due to their unique biological makeup, but this may simply be a retained belief without scientific merit.) Before she left for Starfleet, her mother gave her a polymer resin scalpel handle with the phrase, ''Let your heart guide your hands. Love, M-.'' This was destroyed in 2943 when the crew of the Butler was flung through time.
