Standard policy on the Astraeus is that you must write full-time for at least one full mission before your character receives her or his next promotion, regardless of what rank you begin at. If you arrive mid-mission, then you want to try and begin simming full-time immediately.
The following are the guidelines the Astraeus uses when considering a player for a promotion. These guidelines are in place to make sure all players know some of the minimums the Astraeus Commanding Officer, and the rest of the Command Staff, use when evaluating a player for a promotion. Other things may come into play, such as reliability, attitude, and other less quantitative traits. If you have any questions about the guidelines or your own promotion path please do not hesitate to contact your mentor, the FO, or the Commanding Officer.

Note that being a writer-in-residence aboard the Astraeus for a "full mission" means that you arrived no more than one week after the beginning of the mission. At the end of missions, the CO will present service ribbons to PCs and specific PNPCs as necessary. However, further PNPC and NPC awards can be given, as appropriate, by those characters' writers. As always, any large-scale changes should be discussed with the command team. Use your best judgment!

Promotion of Player Characters
Ensign to Lieutenant JG
Promotions occur after the end of missions. However, the timing of promotions within shore leave may vary: Sometimes promotions occur directly after the mission has ended, and sometimes they occur just before the next mission is set to begin. Your best resource for working toward your next promotion is the fleetwide Promotions Guide.
* Does the player sim well and in the correct format?
* Have they adapted to their ship?
* Has the player completed a mission, from beginning to end, aboard the Astraeus?
* Reviewed the club's Lieutenant JG requirements.
* Promotion to Lieutenant JG Achievements

Aboard the Astraeus, the Player Achievements system is used as part of the promotion process. Before you are eligible for promotion to the next rank, all "Tour of Duty" achievements at your current rank must be completed.

Promotions of NPCs
Lt. Commander to Commander
Technically, only the captain can authorize promotions IC. However, you may want to promote one of your NPCs or PNPCs at some point if you started them at a rank below your own. You are free to create and promote NPCs up to your current rank. For IC "realism," you can tell your NPC/PNPC that your PC is recommending them for promotion (for instance, if your PC is the chief medical officer and your NPC is a nurse in his or her department), but you are free to then show them in a later sim having been promoted "off screen."
The process to move from Lt. Commander to Commander is a fleet-wide process which involves a number of steps, including a practical, written exam, and other requirements. If you wish to make this move the first step is to let your Commanding Officer know.

The rank of Commander is one of staff for the group and as such your Commanding Officer will expect to see a history of OOC work on behalf of the ship and group, without those the rank of Commander will be unobtainable. For those serious about the rank of Commander this requirement should not be an issue.

Lt. Commander to Commander
