Regional Information
The Borderlands is a large swath of Federation space along the Klingon border. Only a limited amount of information is known, other than rumors of pirates and stellar phenomenon that have been said to wreak havoc on ships in the area. More than one ship has gone missing in the region and run ins along the furthest edges of the border with the neutral zone are not unheard of. Many merchants and travelers avoid the region if possible, because of established local legends of space faring monsters and unnatural phenomenon. It contains a variety of species ranging from pre-warp, early post warp, and comparable to Federation technology levels civilizations. In early 2391, Starfleet lost contact with the USS Hermes, which was patrolling the area, and the USS Gemini was dispatched to investigate. In 2397, Starfleet permanently assigned the science vessel USS Resolution to the area for long-term study. Upon the Resolution's destruction in 2398, Starfleet assigned the USS Excalibur-A to the region.
Factions and Spatial Anomalies
The Borderlands consists of many different areas distinct from each other as well as a number interstellar phenomenon not all of which have been experienced, mapped, or understood. Some such areas are known as the Briar Patch, Celendi Nebula, and Azure Nebula. There is only one recognized Trade route through the region that runs through the edge of the Celendi Nebula and is utilized by merchants and freighters to and from the Klingon Empire and Federation space. This has been dubbed the Celendi Trade Lane. Two main species other than the Klingons and Da'al exist in the area seeking out whatever homes they can find, the Son'a and exiled Suliban. The Federation region known as the Borderlands is home to Deep Space 224, a Starfleet run space station used to maintain presence in the region and host a contingent of the Vulcan Science Academy.
The Celendi Trade Lane
Officially starting at edge of Federation space and known as wa'neS(Wayfarers Passage) on the Klingon side of the border, and at Starbase 118 on the Federation side, the Celendi Trade Lane represents the only fully charted passage through the Borderlands sector allowing trade to and through the area. Merchants and traders on the lane deal in a variety of goods but traders coming from the wa'neS tend to specialize in wares found over the border in the Klingon region and vise versa with vessels traveling from Federation sectors. Few venture out from the safely marked trade lanes but those who do are often victims of the many undocumented and unknown phenomenon in the area, or are up to nefarious dealings as unconfirmed rumors circulate of possible black market dealings away from prying eyes. During the Dominion war the Klingon navy ran military supply convoys along the trade route in cooperation with Starfleet.
