 Following his graduation, he was assigned as an Engineering Officer aboard the ''Columbia''. Providence was all but lost at the conclusion of the mission, leaving Theo deeply troubled. During this time he befriended and confided in [[Oori, Nuvia| Nuvia Oori]] who helped him come to terms with events and reminded him of why he joined Starfleet. For his conduct during the mission he was awarded the Prometheus and First Contact ribbons and promoted to Lieutenant (JG).
-After Columbia recieved orders to investigate a series of accidents on Avronis V- a Romulan world notorious for being a contaminated antimatter disposal site- Whittaker began to notice odd occurences aboard the ship. The weapon system's targeting sensors were misaligned- even though he and Oori had repaired them after the previous mission and potentially explosive cargo that should have been stored were placed together.
