Hull Upgrade

This 2392 refit is a full dedication one month refit utilizing the automated facilities of Utopia Planitia Shipyards. The Intrepid would be broken down to her core frame and rebuilt utilizing instead of a duranium/tritanium single hull, but a double hull adding strength and stability to her frame. As the Quantum Slip Stream Drive was one of the main features to be added, the double hull was found to be the best option as the small frame showed that it would take a lot of stress if the QSSD was used constantly. The new hull type would negate that issue.

Software Upgrades

As the Intrepid utilized a Class X Bioneural/Isolinear Computer core and matching circuits, it was decided that the best upgrade would be to a Class XV. Though this is not as advanced as the systems that are out there, it was deemed the best balance for energy conservation as the upgrades did not plan to install any more than a newer version of impulse and warp engines. The LCARS system also was decided to be the primary operating system.

Doctor Carl Svenson of the Swiss Directorate, Earth had continued the development and study of Artificial intelligence. He believed that an AI could be installed to assist a ship and minimize the risk of the infamous M5 incident or the self-aware fiasco of the USS Achilles. Though as of the 2392 refit, no AI has been intended to be installed, the frame work was laid for its installation at a later date.

Slipstream Drive

When it comes to the Quantum Slip Stream Drive (QSSD), the key thing to make it work with the frame was a completely overhaul on the deflector dish. Though the FSQ Primary Force Field and Deflector Control System would meet tolerances, star fleet engineers decided to install the newer RAV/ISHAK Mod 4 Warp Celestial Guidance. (The Mod 4 being a much smaller, less powerful version than the Mod 7 seen in the newly produced Vesta Class.) This would allow the ease of installing the QSSD with minimal interfacing issues.

Engine Upgrades

Even with all the new warp technology that was out there, SFCOE decided to stick with the tried and true on the Intrepid frame. As there were 2 920 LF-34 Advanced Linear Warp drives, they opted to install the 2 920 LF-50s in their place. This gave the ship a boost in power to handle the newer software, but it kept the overall ratio of power output the same. Two FIG-7 impulse engines were also installed to replace the older FIG-4s. Overall, this gives the Intrepid class only a .2 shift in its warp speeds. (Cruising speed: 6.00 -> 6.2 / Maximum Sustainable speed: 6.75 -> 6.95 / Maximum Warp speed: 9.975 -> 9.81)

Tactical Systems

Tactical Changes

The 2392 upgrade to the intrepid class did not include any weapon upgrades except a boost of only a meager 320 terrajoules to the ship’s shields from the upgraded engines. It was considered negligible for the class of ship.

The only major change to the weaponry is because of the hull’s new aesthetic, the intrepid was reduced by 4 collimated phaser arrays and the last remaining ten given better arcs to make up for it. It was heavily debated if the Intrepid upgrade should be given armor. There were many that thought that the reduction in phaser capacity meant the ship required a different defense while others were worried the extra armor would could a weight imbalance on the ship’s core frame. In the end, it was ruled that they would not install armor, but steps would be made in the design to allow the addition if it is proven to be needed by real world use.
