"Freedom? Freedom? That is a worship word. Yang worship. You will not speak it."
a Omegan (Yang) statement.
The Omegans were originally humans from the planet Earth. Descendants from two different colonization expeditions who ended up selecting the same world to colonize, they were soon engaged in a savage war, one that included the use of biological weapons, exposure to which had the unexpected effect of permanently altering certain aspects of their genetic DNA.

History

Although regarded as a separate species, the Omegans are actually the descendants of two separate deep space expeditions launched by two separate nation/states on Earth in the late 21st century. They were part of the first wave of colonists to leave Earth for the chance at creating a new life for themselves.

The two nation states that sent these expeditions were China and the United States. They had both sent a colony ship into the same sector without the knowledge of the other. Both settled on one of the few Class M worlds in the sector, Omega IV.

Their ships were designed to transport them to a new world and then to land. They could then be used to build the nucleus of their new settlement. They were not designed to be able to take off again once they had landed.

A few short years after they had established their new colonies they discovered the existence of the other colony. A colony belonging to a nation state that they had been at war with before they had left Earth. Tensions quickly escalated and war broke out between them. As a result whatever technology and equipment that had not been destroyed in the landing was destroyed in the subsequent conflicts.

However before all of their technology could be destroyed they created a biological weapon. One they hoped would wipe out all of their enemies. This virus disrupted the body at the molecular level, separating water molecules from other organic compounds until there was nothing of the body left but dehydrated crystals. The virus was still present on the planet in the 23rd century, though only a brief exposure to the atmosphere at that time was needed to provide a lasting immunity to the virus.

The Asiatic Kohms (Chinese), were originally called "Communists", and they won the war against the Caucasian Yangs (Americans) originally called "Yankees". As the survivors of the war adapted to the toxic environment, they acquired a naturally long lifespan. They could live to be more than a thousand years old.

The Yangs were driven from their cities, and took to the ways of the native Americans for survival. By the 23rd century, civilization on Omega IV had returned to the iron-age level. The Yangs, dressed in tribal attire, lived in the hills and mountains surrounding the ruined cities. The cities were inhabited by the Kohms, who dressed similarly to Earth's Mongolians. The Yangs were attempting to take their old cities back from the Kohms.

In 2268, Captain Ronald Tracey of the starship USS Exeter beamed down with a landing party to survey the planet for research purposes. He found the Kohm city and established friendly relations with the Kohms. However, when some of the landing party beamed back to the ship, they carried the virus back with them. Within a short time the entire crew of the Exeter was killed.

Driven insane by the death of his entire crew and the loss of his ship, Captain Tracey sided with the Kohm villagers in their conflict with the Yangs. He used his phaser to drive off a Yang attack in violation of the Prime Directive. When the USS Enterprise arrived to investigate, Captain Kirk refused to help Tracey in the battle against the Yangs. He took Tracey away from Omega IV and allowed its people to rediscover their own "history and liberty."

Government

The Kohms live in walled settlements. All of the communities have a hereditary leader called a Kergan. All of these serve the Chung’wa who lives and rules over all from the central capital. In each case these leaders have the power of life and death over all those who serve under them.

The Yangs live in scattered tribal groups that are mostly semi-nomadic. Each tribe has a council of elders that serve the tribal chieftain (Uv’nor) as advisors. Also most tribes have a medicine man (Ur’gon) and a war chief (Ner’al) who also advise and serve as required. The most powerful of the tribal chiefs is called the Prez and his military advisor is called the Man’der.

Description

Since they are descended from humans it is not surprising that they have a wide range of body shapes, heights, weights and appearances. The Kohms dress similarly to Earth's Mongolians and have black hair, mustaches and Asian features for the most part. The Yangs on the other hand tend to be mostly Caucasians with some darker, even black skinned individuals. They dress very much like the native American Indians of Earths 1800’s and have a wide range of hair color and more facial hair.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Theirs is basically that of any normal human although their genetic DNA has become modified in such a way by exposure to biological warfare that they are highly immune to most poisons, toxins and other viral diseases.

Psychology

While they are human they have reverted to a much more primitive way of life and those with mental illness are often simply ignored, cast out or simply eliminated. Fortunately they do not have a very high level of occurrences but those few occurrences could be of almost any of the numerous different types of mental sicknesses that use to plague humans back on Earth.

Religion

The Kohm revere their Chung’wa, treating him with the absolute respect and complete servitude that one would expect to be shown to a religious icon.

The Yangs worship their battered flag. One they call the Stars and Stripes. They also have a Declaration, a statement all of them must learn, one that they believe in and will die for.

Mythology

Both groups have tales, legends and stories that have survived from before they came to this world. However most of them have become so distorted over the years as to have taken on a whole new meaning.

Society

The Kohms live in settled communities, the larger of which have stone walls around them and the smaller ones now have wooden walls. Inside these walls the community is made of well organized streets with the infrastructure designed to provide for as much of the population as possible.

Only the community leader and a few of his most trusted followers live in better conditions than the majority of the population. This is due to the enforced communal sharing of food, work and other resources by all of the community’s population. Control is firmly maintained over all of the community’s population and obedience is enforced into the entire population.

The Yangs move from place to place. This semi-nomadic life is based on the availability of pasturage for their herds and the amount of wildlife to be hunted. Their homes are large yurt like tents that can be moved easily one place to another.

Anyone has the right to express their opinions and they can do as they please, guaranteed their rights by their way of life and the Declaration. They are hardworking, independent, friendly and proud to help each other out as needed.

Culture

The Kohms are fairly stoic and no visual art is allowed except for images of the Chung’wa. Also the only other allowed form of artistic expression is the chanting of work songs. Songs created to enhance the work day and enforce the ideals of obedience and servitude.

The Yangs tend to be a very exuberant, enjoying life and celebrating with music, song and especially dancing. They will spend hours decorating their leather tents with pictures and carving various items. Clothing is also decorated and personalized, often becoming unusual works of art in their own right.

Customs

The Kohms must prostrate themselves completely in the presence of their Chung’wa before being allowed to speak to him. When it is the leader of their community then they must kneel and bow their heads. In both cases it is considered a serious social offence to look upon their leader and can result in punishments.

The Yangs tend to live free and happy, however every young man when he reaches the age of manhood is expected to speak the words of freedom, the Declaration while holding the staff with their flag on it, the Stars and Stripes.

Technology

They have not advanced far beyond the Iron Age. Animal, wind and man power being the normal means of getting anything done.

Economy

There is no trade between the Yangs and the Kohm. However different Yang tribes will trade with other tribes and different Kohm villages do conduct trade with other villages. On top of that both of them will raid their enemies, taking anything and everything they can steal when they do.

Military

The Kohms have organized units of well trained and well equipped troops who guard and protect each village and community. These men have hardened leather armor with metal scales sown on in an overlapping pattern. Their helmets are metal with fur and they use metal reinforced wooden shields, swords and spears.

The Yangs on the other hand have hardened leather armor, wooden shields, spears, bows and daggers for the most part. They fight in a style that is more loose flowing and tends to be based on guerrilla tactics more than anything else.

Federation Intelligence Files

James T. Kirk compared the scenario between the Kohm and Yang inhabitants of Omega IV to the events of Earth's Cold War, where the Omegans fought a war that Earth avoided, and as a result, the Asians won and took over the planet.

Earth Animals

These colonists brought a number of animal species with them from Earth. Most of them domesticated farm animals. One of the most prominent is the Omegan goat which is a mammal with shaggy white fur and two long horns on their foreheads. The planetary conditions seem to be perfect for them as they have thrived better than all of the other transplanted animals.
