"From the deep we came, created to care for our world."
a Manchovites saying.
The Manchovites are a species of completely aquatic humanoids who need special suits in order to leave the water. They live in communities constructed of living multi-hued coral.

History

The Manchovites evolved on a water world where about half of the surface is covered by water that is less than 500 meters deep. These vast areas are extremely fertile eco-systems accounting for almost two thirds of all the native life forms.

Life was easy, food plentiful and the Manchovites slowly expanded and multiplied until they had settlements all over their world. As their populations continued to grow the need to be able to harvest food from the deep water regions required them to develop new technologies.

This eventually sparked a series of technological advances which in turn sparked further advances and an improved quality of life for all of them. This continued for almost 400 years and resulted in a peaceful industrial revolution that lasted for another 300 years.

Approximately 250 years later they developed the first air born vessel and just under 300 years after that they launched their first rocket into space. It took them almost 250 years to develop warp drive technology even though they had built space craft capable of sustaining life a 100 years earlier.

Prior to their developing warp drive they had come into contact with two other species. The Altoran and the Paraagan. Both from nearby systems and while they were able to establish peaceful negotiations with the second species they quickly broke off all contact with the first.

This standoff lasted for close to 87 years before it exploded into violent border clashes. The spark that started it was when one of their first warp capable freighters was attacked and destroyed. All evidence pointed to the Altoran being responsible. They retaliated and for the next 32 years there were infrequent clashes between them. It was never enough to cause them to want to escalate the problem into a full scale war but enough to keep both sides on their guard.

Then in 2372 the border conflict exploded into full scale war. Battles were frequent and violent with no mercy or surrender allowed by either side. As a result of this conflict the Manchovites turned to outside sources and purchased more advanced hand held weapons from an arms merchant in 2373.

Later that year they were able to negotiate a temporary cease fire that after 5 months of further negotiations resulted in peace. Since then they have managed to maintain that peace but they still have not managed to go any farther than that. As a result they keep a small fleet of ships patrolling near their mutually agreed upon border.

Since then they have maintained a semi-isolationist existence with little travel outside of their own system.

Government

Each major community on their world has a regional government that oversees the development and governing of that region. Each of these in turn send 3 individuals to the central government which is called the Coral Coalition.

Description

They are completely hairless with a slick skin due to them being completely aquatic. This skin is a mottled two tone pattern that is completely different from individual to individual, almost like a fingerprint. For most of them this is a mix of dark and light contrasting colors. Their gills are on the side of their faces and they have large upside down curved mouths.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

They are completely aquatic and require water in order to breathe. As such they have had to develop special suits in order to meet with other species on their ships or planets. They have also had to develop specialized technology in order to build space craft that would meet their special needs.

Psychology

For the most part they seem to be a peaceful people with relatively few cases of mental health problems. However they can and will give themselves over to what they call the rage in times of danger. This seems to be a genetic survival trait as it involves sudden surges of adrenaline and other chemicals that increase their strength and lower their pain threshold incredibly. These rages typically do not last long and after surviving one most individuals pass out and need rest and complete care. If they are going to survive it they usually recover in a couple days.

Religion

They believe that in the deepest sections of their oceans where they still have not been able to travel lives beings they call the ancients. These people created their world and all life on it. It is where the spirits of their dead are sent to join them and to continue to watch over them.

Mythology

They have a meager collection of tales and legends that revolve around the ancients and a number of ferocious aquatic monsters that guard their domain deep down in the deepest parts of their oceans.

Society

They have a fairly peaceful and tranquil life with their communities built of living coral. They are clean, spacious with all of the necessary infrastructure and recreational facilities needed to allow them to live pleasant, joyful lives.

Culture

Like most intelligent species they enjoy various types of artistic expression. For them this is most commonly found in large mosaic floors and walls. They also cultivate and grow numerous types of exotic undersea plants and coral, often spending years in the development of a unique and visual pleasing display.

Customs

When one of them dies the body is taken to the nearest area of deep water that is so deep that they still cannot explore it. Here the body is released and allowed to sink until it vanished from sight. They believe that in this way the bodies spirit will be free to join the ancients and continue to watch over them.

Technology

While they have consistently managed to develop new technologies to meet their needs the fact that almost all of it must also be capable of functioning underwater makes the development of each new technology much more difficult than it is for most other species.

Economy

They have managed to establish a few trade deals with nearby species but for the most part they do not venture very far from their home system. As a result while they do conduct trade it does not have a very large or significant impact on their quality of life or economy at this time.

Military

They have never had a very large military. At their peak just before the war they had close to 130 warships and by the end of the war they had 53 left. Most of these vessels were frigates and destroyers with a few light cruisers thrown in.

Currently they have expanded their fleet and continue to do routine upgrades as needed on the 10 light cruisers, 20 destroyers and 30 frigates they have. At any given time about half of their frigates and destroyers can be found patrolling the border of their neutral zone with the Altoran.

Federation Intelligence Files

Sometime before 2373, the Manchovites were embroiled in a war with another species, so Gaila and Hagath sold them 150,000 hand-held weapons. They also sold 100,000 of those weapons to the Manchovite enemies, but an armistice was signed later, so no more weapons were bought.
