"Being born into a specific lounge is as much a function of the chaotic probabilities that govern the universe as it is the result of ones parents mating."
a Lothra saying.
The Lothra are a species of hydrogen breathing humanoids who must use specialized breathing devices when leaving their own atmosphere. They are generally considered to be highly motivated and controlled by their emotions, feelings and intuition.

History

They have a long history of peaceful and co-operative existence, working together to survive and improve the overall conditions that they lived in.

Government

To ensure fairness and impartiality members of the 39 man council who serve on the council for life are randomly selected from among a pool of qualified candidates. Each and every lounge will select the most qualified member of their family group and that name will be placed into the pool. Only lounges who currently have a member of their family serving on the council do not submit a potential candidate for inclusion in the pool.

Description

They are a humanoid species that is completely hairless with a thick epidermal layer that

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

The Lothra are a hydrogen-breathing species that require a breathing apparatus, similar to a respiration device that is a piece of equipment that will allow one of them to breathe while in an unsuitable atmosphere.

The Lothra are a long lived species that typically live between 250 and 280 years on average with some even reaching the incredible age of 320 although this is not the norm.

Pregnancies last on average approximately 13 months. They are considered to be babies till they turn 3, toddlers till they turn 7, children until they turn 16 and youths till they turn 25 when they are considered to be adults.

They have coloured bands on the side of their head that change colour to reflect their emotional state:

  • Light green reflects happiness and joy.
  • Dark green reflects intense emotions, usually romantically inspired.
  • Blue reflects nervousness or stress.
  • Red reflects anger.
  • Purple reflects a calm, relaxed state, either meditative or drowsy.

Psychology

As with many intelligent life forms some of their people suffer from any of a number of different minor and or major mental health problems. When any member of any lounge is diagnosed as being sick, either from a normal medical problem or a mental health one the entire family group takes part in the care, treatment and if needed isolating them from the rest of society until such time as they have either recovered or passed on.

Religion

Many lounges (family unit) have their own version of a pantheon of divine beings that controls and governs their daily lives and way of life. In most cases this is represented by a small family of gods and goddesses, usually 5 in number who are all related to each other.

With the advent of new technology, improved medical systems, treatments and capabilities these ancient beliefs have taken a beating with many people abandoning them in favor of new, more logical and scientific oriented concepts.

Mythology

While they do not seem to have any, the recent discovery of a number of incredibly ancient, over 6 thousand year old clay tablets seem to be shedding a new light on their past. Advanced technological methods have so far been able to recover a majority of the data recorded on the tables and it is hoped that further effort may result in more useful discoveries.

Society

Thanks to the overall increase in the quality of life for the vast majority of their population as a result of improved trade and scientific advancements that have become available since becoming long term allies of the Federation, they have managed to make numerous upgrades and improvements to the infrastructure of a large majority of their larger communities.

Culture

As with most intelligent species the Lothra have a deep and unique appreciation for many of the methods used to express artistic creativity. They especially appreciate the use of a wide variety of tactile surfaces on their sculptures and mosaics.

Customs

Family and Naming Customs

Lothra family members live together in large groups called lounges. They eat together, enjoying large banquets held in great halls dedicated to this purpose. This coming together time is of great importance to them and chefs are held in high regard in their society.

The first name a Lothra has indicates what lounge they come from and the second indicates the order they hatched from their clutch in.

Known Lounges: Sratha - Members of this lounge are renowned for having the traits of great compassion and self-sacrifice.

Technology

Thanks to trade and their long time status as an ally of the Federation they are generally considered to be not that far behind the majority of worlds that are members of the Federation.

Economy

As a long-time ally of the Federation they have been able to enjoy the benefits of numerous trade and economic partnerships that has resulted in a noticeable increase in the standard of living for the majority of their population.

Military

They never developed or needed any real military forces as they have a long and peaceful history of joint co-operation and trust among their own species. However with the discovery that they were not the only species in the universe this changed. Cargo vessels were attacked, trade was interrupted and a solution to this problem was needed.

This need resulted in them becoming allies of the Federation and they were able to purchase a large number of surplus frigates and police cruisers. While no longer considered to be top of the line ships they were still adequate enough to allow them to defend their section of space from pirates.

Eventually most of these ships were retired and only a few that have been maintained and constantly upgraded are still in use.

Federation Intelligence Files

They are a species of hydrogen breathers capable of inhabiting Class-M environments with adaptive gear. The species was known to Curzon or a previous Dax host, since Jadzia talked of a Lothra who mated with an oxygen breather for 57 years. They could only spend 40 minutes a day together without their breathing apparatus.
